Creating tunnels and caves, and alternate paths in later laps

Archive: 5 posts

I'm thinking about making a level where you start out going through a forest on the first lap, and end up switching paths at the start of the last lap and heading into a cave. I have a tool I got from some level that's set to emit a signal when whoever's in first place starts the 3rd lap, so I know I can use that to move some objects or something similar to show another path and block the default one.

My first question is, will it work for me to simply create branching paths when paving the track, block one path for the first two laps, then get rid of the obstruction at the start of the third? Also, I've seen various caves and tunnels in some levels already, but don't know the best way to get smooth, curved walls due to the control scheme for material sculpting. Is it just a matter of trial and error, or are there some handy tricks I should know?

I'm not an expert on race mechanics, but I think you've got the right idea. Most of the tracks I've seen use this method to switch paths, if not all.

As for material sculpting, you are pretty much stuck with the controls to craft curves. There are a few tips that have helped me though:

To create a perfect curved section, expand the circle you want and add, then reduce the size of the sculpter until you have the thickness you want and subtract. Cut away a section of the material to get an open "C" shape and you have your curve.
Sometimes I want more oddly-shaped curves, so I would create a series of small "panels" of the desired thickness and width and then clone them, curving each manually by a few degrees one by one until it starts to resemble a less smooth curve. This can be also be handy if your trying to layout a "grid" that a later smoother curve will take and you'd need a quick guide to help get it right.

Other than that, adding and undoing a mistake is your best bet until you get it right. What I would give for a mouse and keyboard. Hope that helps!

I'll try all that out. Thanks. Also, as luck would have it, I played an online match in Arctic Rumble earlier today. Great job on that one!2013-05-26 00:53:00

Glad I could help man, as you've probably noticed its kinda a time == greatness thing. (unless your Caiman_6 (https://karting.lbp.me/u/Caiman_6) that is)

And thanks for playing AR! I'm trying to fix a severe lack of team-picked battle arenas, and next one coming down the pipe should push the envelope a bit further.
