Introducing - Buttarms

We're back, and this time we take you inside the mind of one of LBP's most talented music creators. Played a great level over the last year or so? There is a good chance the music was done by our very own BuddyDestruction

Hi Buddy, thanks for taking the time to do this interview. As always, lets start at the beginning. Can you tell us about your first LBP Memory?

I don't remember much back then, but I do remember my first ever "Obstacle Course"; which I'm pretty sure I still have. I had so much fun creating it!

What was it that first hooked you about LBP?

When I first saw the game advertised, I had no idea it was a creative-based game; I didn't care about it at all. At that time I was hooked on SPORE and Roblox. My sister had got it for Christmas and I watched her play the Savannah and was getting more and more curious to what it was. When she mentioned you could make your own levels I instantly wanted to try it!

Can you tell us about the first level you ever made?

"Cave of Ziatsue". It was dark, took up three layers and was short; probably 1 minute of gameplay. I was so happy with the finished product, I still go there for nostalgia.

And how have you improved as a creator since then?

By making heaps of unfinished projects. I have at least six gathering the dust somewhere on my Moon.

What would you say is your best moment in LBP to date?

That would have to be when Ucroburst and I finally completed our entry for the Seasonal Spirits Crown Contest, "Operation Claus". (http://lbp.me/v/g4qksw) We had put some much effort into this! I am most proud of this level. It's my favourite level I've ever created! (Or co-created.)

If you Could change one thing about LBP what would it be?

I honestly wouldn't change anything.

Can you list your strengths and weaknesses as a creator?
Strengths - Music, Logic, a bit of visuals
Weaknesses - Art, Gameplay, Contraptions, Urban-style levels

If you could improve one aspect of your creating what would it be?

Contraptions, I'd love to make some kick-butt contraptions!

Lets talk about some of your influences and inspirations.

Kevin MacLeod (https://twitter.com/kmacleod) first got me hooked on instrumental music. I have 253 of his songs on my phone!

When I started to use the Music Sequencer, I found Velvet--Audio (http://lbp.me/u/Velvet--Audio) and he taught me that music in LBP doesn't have to sound like crap!

After that, I decided I wanted to try and get the OSTs for Ratchet & Clank (http://en.ratchet-galaxy.com/music-racgc.php#playermp3) on my phone. And boy, that was the best thing I've ever done! David Bergeaud is my favourite composer of all time and he is my main inspiration! My favourite OST of the franchise would have to be "Yeedil - Protopet Factory" (http://en.ratchet-galaxy.com/musique/rac2/48%20-%20Yeedil%20-%20Protopet%20Factory.mp3) from Ratchet & Clank 2 (or Ratchet & Clank: Going Commando). I can't get enough!

Recently I've been listening to the OST for Sly Racoon (https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=IPJHhMMrzSo&list=PLE58A25EE716B2CF2&index=1), so catchy!

What does being a member of the Ghost Creators mean to you?

Support and motivation!

Tell us about some of your levels.

"Land of the Monkeys" (http://lbp.me/v/6v9pkr) level series. I tried to go for a series like in Story Mode, but that was too much for me to handle. I ended up only making three levels (five if you count Sub-levels), "Land of the Monkeys - Introduction" (http://lbp.me/v/6v9pkr), "Descend into Humid Darkness" (http://lbp.me/v/60skc4) and "Egg Heads"; which is incomplete. I have cancelled the series due to the complexity of the whole thing and the effort I'd have to put in.

The introduction film is cut into two levels, one a sub-level. The first level was about a giant machine destroying a building which was being built by monkeys. Commanding it was "Nalos'Graahk" (previously known as Baja Elang), who sends his other pets to "take care" of threats - the heros of Nuikia, which is the planet they're on.
This was my first film and I'm still very proud of it!

In the next movie, Sackthing and his crew (other players) and searching for a planet to explore when they come across planet Nuikia, where they go in for a landing. This film was actually part of another project, an LBP1 level series which I didn't finish due the arrival of LBP2. I wanted to continue it on LBP2...but ended up ruining it. It was part of a three-part film, it was the first of the three.

The last of three I broke, but I really wanna fix it because I loved it!

Swamper from the extended LPB1 series.

The second level of the series was actually a first level for a previous version of this series. It had three cutscenes which I ended up deleting and redoing most of the story. The level used to start in the "Story Teller's" house - who is now known as Burton Bill - where a cutscene occurs introducing him before the gameplay starts. About half-way through current version (after defeating the giant laser), there used to be a room instead of lava, where the Story Teller teachs you how to use the Grabinators! Then a level link appears to the sub-level.

Meeting Burton Bill.

The sub-level is a large cave with pipes and lava and water all together! I had a lot of trouble putting this together, especially the crane! There used to be a cutscene where you walk in with the Story Teller, but I decided Sackthing would go alone. This has to have the best gameplay out of all my levels!

The third level was only half-done before I pulled the plug. But featured my first ever boss! (Which is quite funny the way you damage him.) This was probably the most troublesome of all the three levels to create!

"Kadeil Zurak - Cave Platformer". (http://lbp.me/v/bbhg1z) This used to be called "A Slimy Mystery", but I thought it was "unappealing" and changed it to what it is now. This started out as an LBP1 project, it was just a cave with a minecart over murky water and an ugly lift at the end. After "Rocket Rush", I decided I wanted to finish it! An early version had an extra set of obstacles, but the thermo was screaming at me and it was slightly buggy, so I removed it. The next version I tried 3D, but it just didn't work, so instead I added thin layer materials and was finally happy with it!

"The Heart of Kahzithulu". (http://lbp.me/v/gdqw7x) This also used to be a LBP1 project, "Celestia", of which I tried to copy most of the concepts in the project; while also trying to implement new ideas. The gameplay in this, I think, is a disaster. But the visuals are so pleasing to me! I also love the soundtrack; simple yet great! I almost lost this project due to saving while un-paused when most of the stuff was deleted. Luckily I had a version published on my Earth!

My future plans have to be to move on to the real world of composing...

And finally, give us 3 tags which describe you as a creator?

Musical, Funny and Destructive.

Blackbeltnick95's first sentence.

Also, thank you for getting me addicted to the Protopet Factory music. As if I needed to procrastinate more.

Awesome interview. Buttarms is one of my favorite music makers in LBP2, and I can see how you got those musical inspirations. Some of the best songs from Buttarms I can think of are 'Place of Wonder', 'Cyborg Factory", and 'Glowing Jungle'.2013-05-25 19:22:00
