Magma Mines (http://lbp.me/v/0vrt8t)

Welcome to The Magma Mines, a vast subterranean industrial complex filled with the remnants of a lost race of miners. The blazing hot caverns are filled with a sea of lava and the precipitous mine tracks are constantly under assault from gouts of flame and burning boulders.

Timing and agility are the watchwords here as you try to avoid the flaming obstacles while leaping from broken mine tracks and swinging from ancient machinery. The final moments feature a brutal ascent along the underside of the mine track and a race to traverse a lava fall blasting plumes of flame into your path.

The difficulty is pretty high but there are double-life checkpoints spread liberally so there is fair chance of success.

I'll add it to my weekend queue. If it's anything like Virtually Impossible it should be pretty sweet.2013-05-24 19:07:00

Oh double-life checkpoints - that should be fine then Seriuosly though, it's nice to see someone producing some more challenging levels. Your Virtually Impossible was cool and so I'm looking forward to playing this, even if if I fail...

Summary:
I can't think of a better way to start playing LBP again, then playing this level! I loved the lava theme, and almost every material matched. The gameplay was simple, not too mind boggling of puzzles and not too complex platforming, but yet somehow you managed to make it challenging! I had to replay it three times just to best the mines. Although one of them was cause I had to leave, which you were there for.

Graphics: 3.5/5

The lighting was spectacular. I think that was probably the best part of the level. The mine track looked great, appearing old an run down. What holds the score down from getting a 4 or maybe 5 is the repitition of the background. It seemed fine at first but after awhile of playing there didn't seem to be much variety in the design. Which maybe could have been overlooked with somemore dynamic camera angles . I think I noticed it change like once. And while I'm on the subject, you could see the wall at the beginning of the level. And that is definitely a let down when playing a level. A camera angle to look the other way would have helped. One last note on graphics, and maybe it's just me, but I don't like the material used for the lava.

Gameplay: 5/5

I had a blast playing this level! It was kinda frustrating with the difficulty as high as it was, but that makes it all the better. And it was great with the puzzles that were tied in. They didn't require too much thinking to solve them. I also really liked the platforming obstacles that I had to overcome. You somehow turned what seemed to be basic challenges in the most hard to pass of jumps and stuff. Everything blended so perfectly together from one challenge to the next, which made the level flow so smoothly.

Story/Objectives: 4/5

There really wasn't much of a plot or anything but the level didn't really need any. The only thing to do was get out of the mine, And that's fine by me. I wouldn't have minded a some secrets along the way, for the path to the end was pretty straight forward. There was nothing really to keep me coming back for more after I beat the level. Perhaps using the sticker that you get at the end to start a race the next time you play, would help at some replay value. And help people compete for the highscore.

Overall: 4.16/5

The level had a great little intro, and had great mechanics of puzzles and a variety of obstacles to over come. It is a challenging level with materials that work well with the theme but tend to get old after a little bit playing. Not much to do after you beat it, but it's great while it lasts.

Lol. I tried playing this with my roommate last weekend. It's definitely easier than VI. We didn't make it through, but this was largely due to us trying to murder each other the whole way through. XD It was fun and entertaining gameplay. Challenging but not unfair. If I'd solo'd it I could probably make it. VI is still my favorite, but this was very enjoyable.2013-05-30 19:08:00

Thanks SilverTriforce7 for the review and for the feedback Kato; Magma Mines is a dangerous place to be fighting!

The camera angles should be a fairly easy thing to sort out, to be honest it's one of those things you notice in a playtest, but have forgotten about when you've been fried a few times by badly timed fireballs.

There are actually a couple of points where the level was meant to diverge, but the alternate routes were never filled in as I got distracted by a new project. Having left the level alone for a while, bar some decorating, I'm enjoying thinking of new things to add.

The biggest job will be changing the material of the lava oddly enough, I know what I'm changing it to and the new material will need stickering; unfortunately when I started building the level way back in LBP1 I hadn't learned some simple rules like: don't stick everything together, and dont make the floor out of one massive piece of blue bubble with thirty or so emitters stuck to it.

Ultimately it's going to need a remake to sort it out, but I'm quite looking forward to do it. I'll post back with a update when the new version is live. Apart from anything else I've always been concerned that I made the dipped bits of track just a touch too steep so It will be good to adjust it a fraction.

Thanks again and to everyone who has played too of course!

Sorry for the double post. Ive done quite a hefty rebuild to address some of the concerns above and it's been a while so I think it is warrented.

There are now hidden paths leading to bubbly rewards, new cave sections giving a break from the endless tracks There's also a visual overhaul changing several materials including the hated blue bubble lava and adding to the lighting and decoration. Finally there are a couple of new obstacles and a better balance between the natural caves and the man made machinary.

Thanks again for the input guys, fixing this kept me sane while playtesting Crytic Crypts!
