Help from People on how to create better

Archive: 7 posts

I know I mentioned this in my Introduction so I wont go into it again too much but i did want to say if you see me online and are willing to help me create things please send me a friends request I don't care if you're under 18 but you have to be willing to teach. The reason i ask you to send me the friends request and a message saying I saw you on LPBC that way I know for sure you will help me and not just a random player hoping to join me. I don't really care for going to The Moon just to watch people blow each other up and all the stuff they're making. This is why i ask you send me a message leting me know you saw me here. Thanks.2013-05-23 23:52:00

I see threads like this all the time. And nobody ever says they'll help. I feel the urge to chime in here.
Y'know why? Cause it's awkward. Nobody has the time or the effort to devise a lesson plan, or even know where to start - We don't know what you already know, and what you want to know.

If you want to learn something, go to LBP2 Help (http://www.lbpcentral.com/forums/forumdisplay.php?126-LBP2-Help!) and just ask a question like everyone else. People are more than happy to help you, whether it be aesthetics, logic, battling the thermo, whatever you can think of. This is easier for everyone and doesn't involve you getting special treatment.
But if you're going to ask for help, it needs to be a coherant question. "How do I build an X, Y or Z?" is much more likely to get a responce than "Halp me get betterer at everything!"

A really good way to get "help in creating" is post a level in the Level Showcase and get some feedback. Until you make some friends like Ostler mentions, it is hard to just jump in and teach you.

What we can do though is give you a ton of feedback on a level you have made. That way, we see exactly what you can already do as well as critique where we think you might need help.

..and other than that, if you have direct help issues, just visit the Help forum or check out the Tutorials which is packed with information.

I tell you something that has helped me a ton is just going through the tutorials (https://lbpcentral.lbp-hub.com/index.php?t=46908-LittleBigPlanet-2-Tutorials-and-Games) section and going one by one and trying the stuff out. Then when I'm in create mode or I have an idea I want to pursue, I again go to the tutorials and see if that certain thing is covered and if not, I take it to the Help section and ask my questions. Something else too, is don't try to come right out the gate creating this epic masterpiece. It. takes. time. I stink at creating, but I'm a long ways from where I started. There's a lot of trial and error involved too. Here's my list of advice:

1. play through the in game tutorials - Don't just play through these to get the prizes, but pay attention and listen to them. If you didn't understand it, play it again and put it into practice and master it, then move to the next tutorial. This is THE place to start as it shows the basics of creating.

2. Play community levels -- Although this can backfire on you the way it did with me, it's still a good way to learn. I started playing community levels to see how people made stuff, create styles, techniques etc, but soon became so addicted to others' levels that I've spent hardly any time on my own levels. That being said, it's still a great way to see how a well made level looks. Go through this list here : Spotlight Search Engine (http://spotlight.lbpcentral.com/)
Just playing community levels, I've learned that don't make just a 3-wide block path for the player to run on. Don't show seams and gaps, etc. etc. I've learned that lighting and sound play a crucial role in a good level. And here's where the tutorials come back into play. I don't know how to put lighting into a level, sheesh, I just use the default lighting. But with the tutorials here on LBPC, I think I can place some fairy lights or other type lights and create some good atmosphere...maybe.

3. The LBPC Tutorial Section -- this is by far, the most comprehensive tutorial archive you will find. And Gribblegrunger did an amazing job of compiling just about every tutorial, both written and video, into one thread called the Tutorials and Games (https://lbpcentral.lbp-hub.com/index.php?t=46908-LittleBigPlanet-2-Tutorials-and-Games) section. Some of the videos are no longer available but there are still tons of vids still good and CompherMC's tuts, forget about it, they're some of the best around. Watch them.

4. Try Try and Try -- go into create mode and just fool around. go into the tool bag and the materials bag and start fooling around. If you don't know how to place material and "smear" it, head right back to the INGAME tutorial. The ingame tutorial will show you all the basics of creating and is THE place to start.

That's all I have as a big thunderstorm is right over us and I need to get off of here as lightning is all around. There used to be someone offering LBP create classes but I've forgotten who that was and if they are still doing it. I'll look around and see if I can find them again.

Another thought is if you ever see anything and would like to know how they did it, just ask! Might be the creator is here on LBPC or we can help figure it out.2013-05-25 18:18:00
