Rollercoasters / theme parks

Those big metal monsters which hurtle around tracks at speeds often over 80mph; what's your opinion, like 'em, loathe 'em? I thought I'd make a thread for one of my favourite things, which is of course rollercoasters. Recently in the UK we've got a new on in Alton Towers (the smiler o.o) Also for fun: https://www.facebook.com/photo.php?fbid=10151699945848185&set=a.10150367580553185.398488.70172603184&type=1&theater Guests who expected to open on opening day and it didn't (Malicious laughter ) So, any parks near you, what's your favourite? Yeah... stuff... | 2013-05-23 17:29:00 Author: flamingemu Posts: 1872 |
Until you get some current response... here is a OLD thread you can look at. https://lbpcentral.lbp-hub.com/index.php?t=61444-Your-favorite-rollercoaster&highlight=rollercoaster | 2013-05-23 17:33:00 Author: Lady_Luck__777 Posts: 3458 |
Not really a real roller coaster, but I now live an hour north of Disney World. Love rock n roller coaster and expedition Everest, but they're not the kind you're talking about Heading to there tomorrow, actually. It's open all night and I'm going to see how long I can last ;o | 2013-05-23 17:36:00 Author: RockSauron Posts: 10882 |
Been on a few Roller Coasters in the UK. All the ones in Alton Towers (except the new one), and all the ones in Drayton Manor... and Blackpool Pleasure Beach, Southport Pleasure Beach (when it was around), Camelot when I was a wee nipper, and a couple at Thorpe Park. Would like to go on a few of the US coasters. They look mad! | 2013-05-23 19:37:00 Author: Ali_Star Posts: 4085 |
I'm going to Cedar Point this summer, pretty nervous actually! Top thrill dragster's like stealth x3 >.> | 2013-05-23 19:40:00 Author: flamingemu Posts: 1872 |
Cedar Point has a new coaster this year. I think the only other one there that I haven't been on is Millennium Force. It's super tall and has an insane first drop. I recommend riding them from smallest to largest. Otherwise the smaller ones feel anticlimactic. I recall the magnum pulling more "g"s than I was comfortable with. I guess that means I'm stuck here on Earth unless they build that space elevator in my lifetime. | 2013-05-23 20:19:00 Author: DreadRandal Posts: 434 |
I guess I'm the first to say I've had bad experiences with them. Every time my family went to a park, somehow they'd get me to go on at least one. This was when I was little, though. It didn't even have to be a rollercoaster; anything that consisted of at least one drop and was really fast was a coaster in my book. They'd usually just flat out lie about it being a thrill ride, I'd already be hurdling downwards at high speeds by the time I found out. From then on, I was actually kind of scared to go to amusement parks. I was a huge pansy, but in retrospect, I think I got way too much flak for it. I was like seven and had massive carsickness. I had my reasons. I'd usually just end up sitting on a bench with my mom while everyone else went on the ride, and even she wanted to go, so I felt pretty bad. At least my cousin was scared too one time, but we just ended up being pushed onto the Winnie the Pooh ride, so that didn't help much. God. It sucked. Actually, I think I even got scared on that one! A door opened at the end of the ride, and I freaked out because I thought it was some sort of giant drop (even though I was on a children's ride). Sure sounded like it. All I could hear was Tigger chuckling his malformed tail off over the roaring water. I guess I was just spooked because they wanted to get me to go on Splash Mountain. Probably just to see my face. Honestly, it'd probably be really funny, but not when they get "splashed" by my lunch. | 2013-05-23 20:27:00 Author: Sackpapoi Posts: 1195 |

Yeah, the *DUN DUN DUN* GATEKEEEEEPERRRRRR. http://media.cleveland.com/business_impact/photo/cedar-point-gatekeeperjpg-d208a7820354fd61.jpg In all seriousness though that doesn't look safe, I'm certain there will be people coming off that ride armless, and not just because they don't have weapons | 2013-05-23 22:06:00 Author: flamingemu Posts: 1872 |
We have our own rollies down here. Me and my friends went to a theme park last summer, and we went on some of the most thrilling rides... Including an inverted coaster and a 100 meter free fall ride. But the funniest one was probably the old coaster. It had little to no line, allowing us to go over and over again... And it isn't too extreme, so we had a great time trying to keep a straight face and even talk about philosophy during the ride! Also, my brother told me that his friends once tried to play cards on that same ride. | 2013-05-24 02:51:00 Author: gdn001 Posts: 5891 |
I live 2 hours away from Six Flags: Magic Mountain, and about 5 minutes away from Disneyland. I've also been to Six Flags Over Texas. TBH, I'm not scared of any rollercoasters. I just know that they're for amusement and won't kill me, so I like 'em. I've been on the Goliath (25 story drop, 253 ft or something) and almost every other ride at Six Flags. There's even a ride called the x2 there that has a negative degree drop. x2 drop: http://farm5.static.flickr.com/4047/4472101611_0646b4deb4.jpg | 2013-05-27 15:37:00 Author: DominationMags Posts: 1840 |

UK smiler still isn't open ;-; probs won't be for another week now due to "unforeseen teething problems". Feh. | 2013-05-27 16:50:00 Author: flamingemu Posts: 1872 |
In Finland we don't really have thrilling rollercoasters. But I have been in Thorpe Park near London, there were some great ones! Stealth, Saw the Ride... But this year I'm travelling to New York and I'm going to visit the Six Flags: Great Adventure -park. Kingda Ka, OMG! | 2013-05-27 17:55:00 Author: Kapum Posts: 103 |

The fact that your "seats" are positioned outside the confines of the actual track probably adds a bit more fear. The closest we have to that in the UK would be Oblivion: http://upload.wikimedia.org/wikipedia/commons/thumb/d/d2/AltonTowers-Oblivion.JPG/250px-AltonTowers-Oblivion.JPG It's actually over 15 years old now! (Wow does that make me feel old!) Doesn't look that big a drop from that pic, but trust me, it does look big when it dangles you looking over the edge for a few seconds before it drops you! Unfortunately, that's all there is to the coaster really, it drops you vertically into an underground tunnel and then brings you back to the station. At it's peak, you'd cue for over an hour just for a 15sec ride! | 2013-05-27 21:17:00 Author: Ali_Star Posts: 4085 |
Yeah Six Flags parks are usually the place to go for major thrills! I have been planning a road trip to go to every park in the U.S.! Excited if I actually do it. I live 25 minutes from Magic Mountain and I work there, so I get free thrills all the time. My favorite ride there has to be the Drop of Doom. 400 foot drop! Tallest in the world! I would love to go to Ceder Point though. I have a friend that used to live there. Thrills are definitely the one thing I seek to do all the time! | 2013-05-30 08:43:00 Author: theonlybub Posts: 690 |
Actually, I love rollercoasters, but there is no theme park near me. The closest theme park that is actually decent is Eurodisney, and that's in France I love that feeling of speed, but I'm afraid of loopings, so I try to avoid rollercoasters with them, just in case | 2013-05-30 09:43:00 Author: Patofan Posts: 1185 |

Do you sneak on all the rides before it's open/after it's shut or is that not allowed? | 2013-05-30 11:11:00 Author: flamingemu Posts: 1872 |
Probably my two favs are at Kings Island in Cincinnati Ohio. I haven't been to that many other parks so my experience is a bit limited... The Beast - Rattly, clangy, unforgiving, bone jarring, horribly loud, wooden coaster that makes you feel the whole thing will explode into a pile of kindling any second. Love it!!! Vortex - Smooth fast tons of great loops and well.. vortex's!! Compound spirals as you zing through... glorious fun. | 2013-05-30 14:07:00 Author: jwwphotos Posts: 11383 |
Well, I live about 5-10 minutes away from Magic Mountain, and my favorite thrill coaster is Goliath. If we're talking themed coasters though, I'd have to say Big Thunder Mountain at Disneyland is my fave. :3 | 2013-05-30 17:48:00 Author: theIronHorse Posts: 279 |

I went on the Smiler Yesterday It's soooooo coooool! You get really dizzy after you come off, and I had no idea where I was halfway through :s I got a nice hoodie though. One downside, queues were about 4 hours long! We were at the park until 8 waiting to get on the ride >.< Good fun though ^w^ | 2013-06-09 00:16:00 Author: flamingemu Posts: 1872 |

Remind me never to go to a theme park the same day as you, because you're obviously a bad omen! Did you travel all the way down from Livingston too? Yeah xD All the previous years it was fun as hell- I went on Air 5 times in a row with a 20 minute wait each time with no repairs needed- and Nemesis I have been on 20 Times in a row (God bless single rider!) But I was so hyped for the Smiler and then it all went to shambles Not to mention Ripsaw this year broke when I was on it ._. 5 Times... In a row... The mentality of the controllers was "Maybe if you turn it of and on again" -.- And this is the last year I get to go with my school!!! | 2013-06-09 19:49:00 Author: Awesome_Guy Posts: 167 |
I've always had a fear of rollercoasters because I've always heard stories of malfunctions and breakings and I always thought I'd be the Bad Luck Brian to ride one and have it collapse. I also hate fast speeds and heights. Sooo | 2013-06-17 03:01:00 Author: Xtrahuman Posts: 431 |
Alton Towers and Drayton Manor, probably the 2 biggest theme parks in the UK (?) are pretty close to where I live, but I've only been to each one once But I went on a few coasters, some more than once. I'd say my favourites are Oblivion at Alton Towers and Shockwave at Drayton Manor. Oblivion because of the whole experience and the excitement, even though it's such a short ride, and Shockwave because it's a lot of fun, although a little uncomfortable sometimes | 2013-06-17 12:13:00 Author: ARD Posts: 4291 |
