EA Ending Their Online Pass Program.

Archive: 17 posts

EA is doing away with its Online Pass program from this point forward, a decision the publisher says is partially based on player response.
?Yes, we?re discontinuing Online Pass,? EA senior director of corporate communications John Reseburg confirmed to GamesBeat in an e-mail. ?None of our new EA titles will include that feature.?
Battlefield 3 and a number of other EA games such as Madden NFL use Online Pass. You need it in order to play many of a game?s online features, including multiplayer. A code activates the Pass, which has a one-time use. You need a new code (which the publisher offers, of course, for a fee) if you?re playing the game on another console or if you bought the software used and the original owner redeemed the original. But players never embraced this feature.
?Initially launched as an effort to package a full menu of online content and services, many players didn?t respond to the format,? Reseburg said. ?We?ve listened to the feedback and decided to do away with it moving forward.?
Online Pass is seen by publishers as a bulwark against the second-hand market, which retailer GameStop dominates. Publishers were worried that consumers were buying games used instead of new ? especially big games with popular multiplayer modes. So the online pass became a way that publishers forced consumers to either buy a game new ? or pay extra for online.
But from this point forward, you won?t need an Online Pass for any of EA?s games online.
?We?re still committed to creating content and services that enhance the game experience well beyond the day you first start playing,? Reseburg said.
EA wasn?t the only publisher using an online pass system. Activision and Ubisoft are among a handful that make use of it.

I am... speechless.

They lost 300m buckaroos from TOR, and lost their CEO.

It's gonna be like 2007-8. Ok for a year or two, and then back to being bottom of the barrel.

Ah. I see.

Well, there would still be the matter of the PS4, unless THOSE rumors are true... and of course, they're not making stuff for the Wii U anyway.

Yeah, but they still don't really care about it.

so they decided to end it...

well its kind of mean to try to punish some one for getting a used product, is as if the original maker of a table would charge me for buying it used, in hopes of me wanting to buy a brand new one, on top of already taking the risk that the used product could be defective or wont have the same lifetime as a brand new one.

It feels as if im not buying games, but as if i was renting them :/

Further to EA dropping online passes (http://www.thesixthaxis.com/2013/05/16/ea-drops-online-passes/) going forward, they’ve reduced the asking price of a good chunk of existing ones to zero. In a strange, oddly unannounced move, the required passes for some online and some single player (ugh) are now free.
The list appears to be limited to Xbox 360 games at the moment, but if you’ve got any of the game below second hand and haven’t yet bought an online pass, at least now you can grab them for free.

EA doing something good? What kind of world are we living in?

Now luckily, everyone will drop online passes, and hopefully they'll turn DLC into full-fledged expansions again

What was the EA Online Pass?
Online Pass was a unique, one-time-use code included with new EA games that allowed EA players to access online features. If the game was not purchased new, the online pass code might have been used already and the player would need to purchase a new Online Pass.

Do I still need an Online Pass to play multiplayer games online?
For new EA titles, Online Pass will no longer be needed or included. Additionally, we are in the process of eliminating Online Pass requirements from existing EA games. This process will take several weeks. For some games, the prompt to enter an Online Pass code will no longer appear; for others, you will still need to download and install an Online Pass, but they will be available free of charge from the Xbox LIVE Marketplace or PlayStation Store.

When will specific games have their Online Pass turned off?
The latest releases of EA SPORTS games are the first. Over the next several weeks, Online Pass will either be removed completely, or will be available for free in the PlayStation Store and Xbox LIVE Marketplace.

Please note that our advisors will not be able to provide you an Online Pass code before that game's pass requirements are disabled. We appreciate your patience.

Why did we decide to do this?
We listened to the feedback from players, and decided to do away with Online Pass. We hope that eliminating Online Pass will allow more people to play and enjoy EA games for a long time to come.
