What's the Ugly Level Project

You take a template of obstacles made by Chris3884 and create a level with them in it. You can change the material, add decorations to make it look more appealing.

Story

It's a sci-fi story about four explorers digging to the center of the Earth. Their mission doesn't go as planned.

Gameplay
Platforming and cinematics. Along with the template obstacles there is also a platforming tetris section that's pretty funny. I was thinking of making a full game out of that one section in this game.

Yay! What an adventure !!!

Very good entry for te Ugly Level Project.
I love the intro and the story of your level.
It has a neat design and you changed the gameplay without changing the obstacles: great implementation!

Excellent

Thanks Biorogue and Avundcv. Really appreciate you play all my levels

Glad you like the story Avundcv. The next part of the story would be really cool to make even though I probably wont. Have to get back to my hidden object levels lol. You would Explore the long lost vessel of the four explorers. It would have a claustrophobic feeling. Each of the four explorers have written a diary, recounting all of their events that led to their death. As you explore the vessel, you find the diary's pages littered through out and you learn more of the story. Also, you have deal with the monster lurking in the magma heh.

That's a good idea Avundcv That would be fun.

Thanks Brutal! Glad you liked it. I'll play your rpg level when I have time. It is frustrating when no one plays your level. The only way I got people to play my games was from the people on lbp central, lbp network, and planetarium. Great websites and people.

Thanks Schnupsi! You know I think yours is awesome Really clever idea. I also noticed you changed that one obstacle too lol. The one where the blocks push you into the fire if you dont jump right. The original template one was really hard to get past lol. I put a floor underneath so you cant die heh.

I feel obligated to mention that I loved this level, but for some reason I found it immensely scary. To me it evoked feeling of worry and desperation, sort of like how I feel when I watch Paprika. Just how a serious situation is suddenly all vivid and commercialized, and as part of the attraction your fate is to suffer long and die. I saw the end coming, but the goal was to finish the level. The hopelessness and helplessness was just very chilling to me. Very cool!2013-05-20 20:12:00

Thanks very much Kato. You're right. I didn't intentionally start out trying to make a a scary level. But there is definitely a sinister feeling in the game. How the amusement park commercialized a serious subject and took advantage of the public's interest in the four explorers. I was going to include more information on the company that built the amusement park and make them even more of a bad guy in the story. It got a little confusing though so I ditched that idea.

I got inspiration from an episode of Doctor Who called Midnight. I'm only a casual viewer of Doctor Who because a lot of the stories are pretty goofy lol, but there are also some pretty intense episodes. Midnight was really intense for me. Even though the Midnight story is different than my game, it's also really similar in that sinister feeling.

Thanks for playing and the vote

Also, the voting process has begun for the ugly level contest. I'm not mentioning this in my level so you can vote for mine, but there are a lot of great levels and very few votes. You have until May 25th to vote.

Here's the thread Avundcv posted for all the information.

Actually, I did already vote for your level a while ago. XD LOT of good entries, REALLY great stuff, but yours managed to penetrate my caked on layers of social bliss to evoke an emotional response I'm not used to.2013-05-20 21:45:00

I finaly got around to playing this and I really liked it. The art design was really cool ad creepy but fun. The story was really interesting, I loved the lava in the window effect. The part I liked best was when you are under water and its really dark with the exception of the periodic blue light. I did a deep sea level back on lbp one and I think I am gonna get a new account and rework that level to use a similar lighting effect I liked to so much. I did get a bit lost a few times but I have some levels like that and I actually think getting lost can be a really good thing in a game if you have the patience. Overall really great, can't wai`t to play some more of your stuff.2013-06-06 01:23:00

Thanks ClassiestHobo

I can give you the logic for the light if you want. I first used it in my music jukebox level so my jukebox would gradually change colors. Took me awhile to figure out. Maybe it's pretty easy to make and I just did it the hard way lol.

You're lucky you didn't play my game when I first published it because it was even easier to get lost heh. Not that I purposely made it hard to get through. There's some backtracking, which is probably the reason a lot of people get lost. Do you remember where you got lost? Around the spiky area? I can see some people getting frustrated because of it.

Thanks for your feedback
Glad you enjoyed it.

It was actually at that water part. And yeah I have 2 or 3 open levels that aren't currently published that require backtracking and exploration and most people seem not to finish them.2013-06-06 07:39:00

Played this today, fun little level, and quite a change from the initial cardboard its based on!

The bright colours and shapes made it feel like an amusement park, and I liked the darker twist you placed on the story. I also really enjoyed the way the story was laid out, getting the tidbits of story from the park billboards was a neat idea, and it lets the TL;DR crowd skip it at ease.

The only real complaint I have about this level is that it's short. I'd love to see where you take us if you ever decide to explore the center of the earth further. Thanks for the level

Thanks for playing

I definitely would like to continue the story... especially since i left everybody with a big cliffhanger lol. I'm thinking when the next ugly level project comes around I'll continue it.

I'm glad you liked the billboard idea to tell the story. I will probably do a similar way of telling the story for the next one. Scattered journal pages are lying around the ship that people can choose to read or not. The pages explain more about what happened to them.

Why have I not got up from my lazy *** to play this one yet?

Expect a review soon.

And when I say soon, I mean really, very soon.

I went into this level with high expectations. After having not really played this game for a while, returning for me was rather difficult. I played a handful of levels on my other account before this, but they... They were not memorable at all. They were barely even any good. Then playing some other levels I had really liked in the past, it felt like they had lost their shine. They were still good, but not remarkable as I remembered them.

I was checking the list of gazillion levels I had queued times ago. Then one name caught my attention: Greensmurfy. You have created some high quality stuff before and the level had such an intriguing title... How could I resist? I understand that this level was built using some of the Ugly level project objects, so I try to see this level in a little bit different light than what I usually would, when reviewing a level.

So the level begun with a cut-scene. I have complained about the difficulty to create working horror in LBP time and time again. This cut-scene was like something out of Doctor Who episode "Midnight". Surprisingly lot, actually. A handful of people are trapped in a metal box in an environment which would burn them in a millisecond, with a sinister being outside that couldn't really be there and then the knocking aspect. It scared me a little bit. After seeing it, I thought: this could be the exact kind of horror that can actually work in this game...

Then we get to the actual game. I didn't stay to watch the credits in the beginning, because I wanted to see how the level actually performed. At this point I can say that this level was good. No need to fear that I'm going to bash this, but I also have to say that while there is a ton of potential, the fact that this is a part of the ugly level project holds the level back from being great.

The gameplay was rather simple. I have sometimes given different scoring to simple gameplay, mainly depending on how well it works in the level. It didn't work well here. The neon style and the dark atmosphere are screaming out for complex and psychologically effective gameplay, but this level doesn't deliver on that. However the gameplay never felt out of place. Not once did I think to myself that this level blew it. The few little additions, such as the replica of space-shot and the raising water used to get some of the points really helped to make it feel like an amusement park.

The visuals were not amazing, but they were dark enough to help the constant horror aspect. I was actually a little bit scared with the signs that told the story, even though I don't think marketing a trip to the Earth's core using such an example works. I wouldn't take the trip knowing that one crew mysteriously disappeared. However, back to the visuals. The signs looked amazing, the lighting worked in parts very well, while in other parts it actually distracted from the level. Also, the occasional far-zooms didn't, in my opinion, quite work.

Audio-wise this level was great, though. The dark soundtrack helped to enhance the horror elements here, while the sound effects themselves were a great way to detail the level, especially in the cut-scenes. However, nothing in this area blew me away with awesome either. Not to disrespect the level, though. Few creators can make the soundtrack and audio-effects work this well in a level and if there's one thing to enhance this level altogether, I'm glad to know you had what it takes to actually make it so the audio enhanced the lacking aspects here, making the level quite an enjoyable experience.

Gameplay: 7/10 (aided by the working elements of horror and the story)
Visuals: 6/10
Audio: 9/10
Conclusion: 7,3/10

And as it's just a part of human nature to disagree, it's only fair if you feel like I was unfair here or if my review is not quite accurate. It's how I feel about this level and remember that there are people who like this level more than I do.

This level was, in the end a worthy way to return to this game after a bit of a pause. You are really beginning to create your own style and I hope to see more from you in the future. A sequel to this, perhaps?

Thanks Kato

You always write very detailed and well written reviews FreeAim. Makes it so I can't disagree with anything you said heh. It's awesome you associated my game with Midnight! I might have mentioned this in a different thread, but Midnight from Doctor Who was where I got my inspiration from. Definitely one of my favorite episodes from Doctor Who. The story wasn't too complex like other Doctor Who episodes. It was an entertaining, psychological thriller. Loved the part when the lady and Doctor Who said their lines at the exact same time!

Back to my game and your review. I definitely agree when you said the game needed more complex and psychologically effective gameplay. That's what I envisioned when I thought of the idea. Then again, I probably wouldn't have made the game if there wasn't an ugly level contest. It kind of took the pressure off of me to think of some complex gameplay. It's pretty tough coming up with entertaining, complex gameplay.

Maybe the only thing I would disagree with you is the visuals. I liked the way it looked... some places more than others. I definitely liked the neon ferris wheel in the beginning with the trees illuminated and the intro cut scene when you see the lava. One person thought the visuals "looked hideous" or "disgustingly good". There definitely have been a wide range of opinions on the visuals lol.

Thanks so much for the review. Your feedback reflects what I think of my level, but I couldn't explain it as well as you. Also, I'm honored you went into this game with high expectations.
