Archive: 25 posts

Here is the only level i would like checked, it takes about 2 minutes to complete and i would be happy to give your level a good review in return

Level Name: Operation 107
PSN ID: Samson107

You have to destroy the enemy fleet using either a helicopter, tank or jeep. It's a side scrolling shooter that you can play up to 4 players. you win points for your kills and your overall time

It sucks not a single person has posted in here yet, you know you spelled Helicopter wrong? Kind of a turn off to the thread which might be the reason. I will check it out tonight or tomorrow.2009-01-24 23:10:00

Operation 107 was a truly impressive level. My wife and I played together, she as a tank and I as a helicopter. The intro section was impressive and explained the setting well. Playing the level was great. It really shows what you can do with this game engine. The components were very well designed. I'm still not entirely sure how you managed to get the controls to behave the way they did... I'm imagining a orange floaty cage around the sack persons with rods connecting it to the helicopter? Anyways, it really played well. The enemies were great, but there wasn't any damage collection. I would suggest some mechanism of accruing damage (I've got some ideas if you're interesting in further input). The use of LEDs (I assume) for explosions was great. The final boss was a little confusing, and he didn't attack back at all. The ending was good and gave adequate instruction. We enjoyed it enough that we played your tank level. The tank was GREAT! Again, need to collect some damage though. I would LOVE to see how that thing works.

Ok, so, my first question is: you have 615 hearts and over 4000 plays on this thing, and you're just now showcasing it? Wow. But, hey - I'm game if you are.

Pros:

+ I've seen a few games done in a similar way, however none as good as this. Very fluid and intuitive movement, a lot of fun. (I know HOW you did it and it is clever, but I'm not going to ruin it by saying anything)
+ Very clean visuals. I love the backgrounds, and even the BEGINNING of the game oozed with style.
+ I can see how jumping into this game with 4 people would be a BLAST. I wish I had more friends....

Cons:

- I understand WHY you made the decision to keep it simple with very little danger - certainly a lot more people will come out of the game with a nice fresh "I feel good, I just blew up some stuff" feeling. But it would be great if you could copy the level to something like "Operation 108" and put some danger elements into it. I would have loved to have DODGED stuff instead of just shooting. But don't mess with the game you have certainly - you have a good formula going.
- I wish I had more friends

All-in-all a great designed little game. Kudos.

If you get a chance, try my "Splat Invaders Saga" level. I also creatively built a level around the concept of glueing and placing a thin layer in-between for "floating things" around. You may get a kick out of it.

Woah, I was just about to try this - but First I think you need to take a second to calm down and think about all this:

A. If your not going to take people advice why ask for it
B. Even though the F4F system is in place doesn't mean you'll always get feedback, some people only do so much feedback, some people dont check their thread often, some people are just busy.
C. There are 100's of levels being published every minute, you cant expect loads of plays and hearts and people singing your praises from publishing one - just because 1000's of people dont care doesn't mean no-body cares

I've also noticed you've started posting on other thread complaining about how much attention they've got compared to this, Personally I think you need to wind back the whining a bit and realise it isnt all about plays and reviews, if your going to create levels make them for the love of creating and not to get your name in lights. It takes a ot of effort, and even more time to make a name for yourself as a level designer.

Still I'm going to try this anyway

Well I just took a shot at it and I must say it looks great, the design to the whole thing is wonderful - but yet it all feels somehow...unfinished. Like a demo to the level.

The main problem is while you have plenty of action and a great idea, theres no danger - after a while you start thinking "So...what am I actually doing here?"

Making the level into a survival challenge might be an idea, and if you dont want everything getting blown up make the enemies fire paintballs - after so many hits you lose!

Oh another minor suggestion would be to change the music once you've left the vehicle, somehow wandering around your base to sounds of dramatic choirs foretelling doom isnt quite right...

anyway, great level 4 stars

EDIT: I always forget about F4F, check out HEIST 2 (in my sig) if you want - but no problems if you cant

You know, just a little note of encouragement. I totally agree. I've been rummaging through a LOT of levels for the last few weeks (probably more than you can imagine). If I feel a level has potential I do a review of it, I don't if I just can't think of positive things to say. But you know, out of the 50 or so levels I've gone through in the last couple weeks, yours still sticks out. I actually played it with my son earlier. It's on my hearted list.

AND looking at your hearts and plays - you HAVE to be proud. This level has had a lot of attention, and rightly so. (my Splat Invaders Saga has less than 400 plays on it at this point)

Nice work! I hope you get encouraged and stay part of the community. You're definately a talented author. A lot of people just come in, dump a level into the list, and don't contribute anything.

My personal feeling is still (even though this is a GREAT game) that you should make a level that takes the idea further and adds some danger elements.2009-02-02 18:50:00

yeah definatly, i was thinking about making the enemy fire paint balls which makes some poison gas emmit where u are. im gonna try to show the paint switch so u can see your health, but only of it looks ok, i might also add something special at the end but i have to be carful cause my thermometer is very close to full2009-02-02 20:43:00

I've just had a play of your level. Heres what I thought as I play

+ I like the start and the selection of vehicles, and how the parachute drops down onto your chosen ride. Well done
+ The scenery looks good
+ The playability on the level is great, it all works fine.
+ Bet its great fun four player
+ I lol'd at the boardroom section at the end.

- The helecopter control is a little erratic
- When you shoot the blocks on the building (??) and zeppelin theres not much to do other than shoot.
- Length is a little short
- Difficulty is a little lacking

This is a good little shooting level, well designed and looks great. I was enjoying it mostly, other than the building and zeppelin sections which were a little flat. I aced the level first try.

I'd be more than intrested to see you expand or make a longer version.

As others have said, this level looks nice, and the vehicles work pretty well (though, I find the helicopter to be a bit too "wobbly"... maybe make the bolt used there more stiff or something?). I find the other vehicles have a rather big advantage over the others.

As others have said, you're basically just shooting things, with nothing trying to shoot you back. Blowing things up is only fun for so long (which, by the way, I loved the explosion effect you used). Danger elements would be nice.

Also, I seemed to have stumbled upon a rather massive glitch once you get in the building (the part in the picture you posted actually). I wasn't able to re-create it when I tried, but somehow I lost control of the helicopter I was using when I went up to the ceiling (it just dropped). At this point, I was free to fly around with the jet pack to almost everywhere in the level. I'm not exactly sure why this happened, but somehow I must have escaped the thing in the background that was controlling the helicopter's movements (assuming I get how this all works of course). It might be something you'll want to look into, but then again, it could just be a fluke.

I also thought the end part was silly. One quick suggestion here would be to make the guy's mouth reach a little farther so you know he's there. My first time through, I grabbed the switch before I even knew there was a guy there to fall in the trap door.

Other than that, this level certainly was fun while it lasted.

A coworker of mine just came in a few minutes ago and said "Hey, I played operation 107 on your hearted levels list. That was FUN!". I agree with some of the other reviewers to a point, but my personal opinion is that this game, for what it is trying to do, is designed perfectly (well, unless there is a bug to be fixed). Yes, it's short. Yes, there's no danger. But I've gone back and played it several times and I love playing it with my son - that doesn't happen too often.

It's a unique, non-frustrating experience that adds perfectly to the LittleBigPlanet collection of games.

But the fact is, I think this is an IDEA that could be heavily improved on. Personally, I think you should just create a new game where you take the experience from this game and push it to another level.

(maybe a level where you need to fly a helicopter and pick up stranded soldiers and fly them to safety! Kind of a LBP Choplifter! Oooohhh...)

wow thanks CCubbage, i will make more levels like this but better. i've already got some good ideas for Operation Choplifter.

As for that glitch, i know whats causing it, for some reason a wobble bolt is stronger if it's attached to a strong material and unfortunately dissolvable material isn't very strong. i thought it couldn't be fixed but i got an idea that might sort it... it's very rare it happens though.

My first time through, I grabbed the switch before I even knew there was a guy there to fall in the trap door.
i was worried about that, cheers pal i will fix that

you're basically just shooting things, with nothing trying to shoot you back.
I didn't want players to die, i wanted it to be a speed challenge, the faster u do it and the more enemies u get the more points u get... not many people have gotten close to my highest score. I will make a separate level with damage as CCubbage suggested.

Length is a little short
I'll try to figure out a way to free some space and make it longer.

Nice level. same as everyone else, there needs to be a danger element. however I have been back to play it a couple of times anyway. I love the way its all put together. its good that your listening to whats being said and you want to recreate a level with the danger, let me know if you do cos I will play it.

oh and the music does need to change when you get out of the chopper.

Also love that u published the level skeleton so we can see how it works. very inspiring.

This is my first review, does this count?

I went ahead and tried this and I had lots of fun. It's a nice, relaxing shooter that you can play to just have pure fun.

Pros:

- The different vehicle choices are awesome.

- The vehicles/enemies look good as well.

- The explosions are a very nice touch.

- The environment looks good too.

Cons:

- As other have already said, there's no challenge. I don't really find this to be too big of a problem and you're already working on a harder version.

- The camera angle for the blimp is good for the front half/third of it, but you might want to change the angle when you go further down the track.

I really enjoyed this level and I eagerly await the harder version. Send me a PM when it's up and running.

If you could give me some feedback on the level in my sig, I'd appreciate it.

Wow, this level is totally amazing. It's a blast, and the toy car feel of everything is amazing. It feels like a much better, and more arcadey version of the toy plane level I played by xynghi. The epic Battle On the Ice music is perfect for this, and for once feels happy and fun, instead of epic and threatening - fits all the nazi bomber, zeppelin content. The explosion effects are beautiful and functional, the timing of the reversed emitting objects is perfect and the way you disassemble the giant red zeppelin is just plain cool.

I have no complaints. It's totally fun, controls perfectly, it's got a variety of vehicles, rewards you for performance, and even the areas where you're not in a vehicle shine... especially the office area at the end with the meeting table, the very cool lock to enter, the detailed furniture, and the TV screen and the very nicely decorated and stickered scoreboard area at the end - it shows that you could easily apply your talents to a fully functional platformer and make it detailed, complex, nice to look at, and engaging.

Your high play count and heart ratio should prove that you're doing something right, and just shows me how ridiculous it is when people critique a level for trying to be something that it's not, rather than complimenting it for what it succeeds at being. I have a level where no one dies either... that's not the point.

GREAT job, 5 stars, and hearted... I don't normally bother to say wether I did or didn't heart something.

I played this level a while ago but didn't know you had a thread for it until I saw your post about your tank. I just wanted to tell you I really enjoyed this level. I've played it like 3 times to show some other friends the level and I never get tired of it. I think it's a great use of the concept of being behind a wall controlling something in a different layer. I also liked the little room at the end, it reminded me of that movie Austin Powers (lol.) I hope you make some more of these kinds of levels using this concept, I rated this one 4 stars and hearted it.2009-06-01 05:53:00
