Plasma Ball Castle 0.6

Archive: 2 posts

OK so to test out my enemy design and some "hard" platforming, here's Plasma Ball Castle 0.6, my officially first level. It has custom music, a cinematic intro, and a series of obstacles and enemies to get past. The enemies are unconventional and you must figure out the unconventional way to get past/defeat them. Or is it conventional? You decide! It's not a very long level, and the logic is relatively simple. But I thought it was fun to make and play. Let me know what you think.

EDIT: Updated to version 1.73, making the intro movie skippable (not sure if this will work for multi-player though; I *think* only the first player might get to see the scene?).

EDIT:
Here is an image showing the unconventional type of platforming.

What you have here is something that can either act as a rope-swing (ala Pitfall) but actually it must be used as a platform to get past the enemy. You have to jump on top of the "rope" (it's actually a sponge wedge) and then the enemy pushes the wedge, propelling you "over the top". You use the grappling hook to stay attached to the sponge rope, and to catch the platform down below when you jump off to the right. The creatinator way up top is actually a hazard, since if you get it, then you'll lose your grappling hook. This may he a bit too devious, what do you think?

Here's another fun mechanic, from the beginning of the level:

So the first plasma ball uses a branching logic for its pattern. First part is an animation recorded with the touch-screen looping fast. As the player approaches it speeds up so it's very hard to predict the pattern. When you get close enough it switches to a very slow Follower, but once you are out of the Follower's range it returns to the up-and-down pattern (which is very fast). If you run past it too far then when it switches back, it will nail you, so if you get past it, you have to keep it close behind so it stays slow. There are a bunch of sponge logs and some bigger pieces you can use to alter its path and protect you from it, at least while it's slow. You can make it ramp up into the air and run underneath it, holding a piece over your head with grabinators to get by. Once you make it past the burlap sack on the ground, you're basically safe. Then it's on to the next part!
