Hatter Fields: Top-Down Survival Horror

Archive: 20 posts

Hey LBPC!
I've been working hard for the last few months on this game, and I have the first chapter fully finished and posted up now, along with a working tutorial.

[Edgar and Elise...]

Trust me when I say this is likely really one of the best horror levels you'll come across. No random jumpscares, no screeching ghost wails as you walk through a cheery forest.
I've really worked to take a direct, purposeful, careful approach to horror.

If anyone's interested, I'd love feedback and will gladly play any levels you'd like feedback on, as this is currently in production and I'd really like to do this right.

I gave this a try last night, but I'll probably want to try it again. I got stuck, or maybe lost, or maybe the game just didn't load something. Anyway, I got the old key and went into the basement, and there was a grave I could dig. I couldn't find a shovel. There also seemed to be a hole in the ground but I couldn't use it. I stopped there because I couldn't find out where to go. So far so good, but the item-finding may need a touch or two for the new players. Top Down scenery is really nice though.2013-04-26 14:15:00

Ah, thanks for playing and giving it an honest go, Kato. Hmm... Item-finding is rather relaxed to start, but I agree the Spade is rather hidden in relation to the rest of the items... You explored outside the house, right? Because otherwise, I need to further look into this. :O2013-04-28 09:22:00

I did a bit of wandering, but I must have missed it. Is it by any kind of shed or is it just lying in the grass?2013-04-28 15:35:00

Side of the house, follow the flowers. You have a point, maybe I need to make that a bit more obvious. .-.2013-04-28 22:07:00

I did not get much farther in my playthrough as I did not reenter the controlinator after exiting the basement. What I did get to play was a pretty good start though.

I thought you set up the level nicely. Visually, the atmosphere worked well, and there were some good moments, such as the tv. While I didn't get to run through it, aspects like the piano seemed like they would make good puzzles later on.
I think the weakest aspect might be some of the sound effects. They were there, but they occasionally sounded muted when they should have had a greater effect.

The tutorial was nicely done, it explained the mechanics well and was worth checking out. I'm it was a legitimate walkthrough and not just a text block.

Character movement should be disabled when the inventory menu is open. I knew the player would still be movable as soon as I saw that the inventory uses the d-pad instead of the control sticks. It doesn't seem like it would ever be a problem, and most people will just use the d-pad and never the stick at all, but it is a minor detail that cleans up a bit for people like me who are looking for it. Disabling movement should be as simple as having a switch deactivate whenever the menu is open (attached to AND GATE with movement controls), but I don't know what your logic looks like so I may be wrong. Minor detail, but maybe worth looking into if its an easy fix.

A minor thing I did like, the circle around collectables. It seems obvious to have it, but I'm glad it was there.

Finally, this is one a lot of people do, not hiding the sound effect for leaving the controlinator. When I got knocked out of the level, it was on my second time leaving the basement. But each time the player goes down/up, it is obvious, both from how the camera moves and the sound of the ejection, that the player is switching controlinators. It is distracting and could have been covered up, I believe there was even a creak sound playing at the same time. Again, this is something that a lot of people do (leaving the change obvious) but it helps the atmosphere to hide it.

It was a good start, and I will probably try it out again.

same as xxmate, i was enthralled by this level until it booted me from the action basement/upstairs

Also, have you considered isolating the menu and the hero between controllinators and just run it as if it was a menu screen.

Also, for added effects throw in a 3d cam for stop viewing only, just an idea and nothing more.

can't wait to replay this

In response to xxMATEOSxx, I do have a sound playing over the Controllinator, for some odd reason, it gets cut and the controllinator noise overrides it despite the Movie Camera focusing far away for the second it's in use. It's an odd quirk there.
Incidentally, Edgar should be frozen beyond turning left or right when in menu, possibly not in the tutorial as that's the oldest "Edgar Bot" as do the enemies in the upcoming chapter, but your eye for detail does help.
The sounds are for some reason muted when online, and the Trapdoor Glitch also occurs. It's very confusing, but I'm going to avoid multiple Controllinators in future chapters, and look for a simple fix in the first Chapter, possibly similar to L-I-M-I's suggestion. I promise this will get better, as these unfortunately game-breaking flaws are almost entirely out of my hands due to issues with LBP's downloading process. D:

I believe that it is impossible to create horror, as no LBP level has EVER scared me to date. However I will give this one a chance. If it's not scary, fine, I won't take anything out of the score, but if it is, be ready for a thousand praises coming your way.2013-04-30 07:48:00

Great level.
The story, the atmosphere and the top down visuals are very nice.
I wasn't able to finish it, but that's my own fault. I thought "hey, I'm a clever guy, there's no need to read the tutorial".
Hm,...seems I'm not such a clever guy

I have to try it again after playing the tutorial
However: I've seen the start of a great top down story level
Well done!

@FreeAim I almostly whole-heartedly agree with you, though, with the enemy logic coming up in Chapter 2 that I've finished, and the managing of healing and ammo, it WILL be tense and live up to the Survival portion of the name quite well. 2013-04-30 19:22:00

F4F - Hatter Fields: Top-Down Survival Horror

Level Thread:
Great thread with a couple of good pictures and a story. I like the rating system you employed ? ?Teen?. I think I might actually be way too old to play!

First Impression:
WOW ? You are offering me a free level kit to get started on my very own Top-Down level. COOL! Looks like I better do the tutorial first?I expected ?X? to select, but it was ?O? instead. So far the tutorial is nice and I took a cardboard key! XD The menu is also nice and is a good start to what seems like could be an epic adventure. The title screen picture is good even though it's fuzzy. If the font was more readable it might have been even better.

Environment:
Great sound effects, especially on the black screens. I?m really digging the environment you?ve created and the sounds are making it even more alive. I think my heart even skipped a beat for a second. That can?t happen in an LPB level can it???

Controls:
My sack moves smoothly and the inventory system is nice. It's a tad confusing when I keep wanting to press ?X? for select instead of the ?O? you have programmed. My sack did fall out of the controlinater almost every time after I came back up from visiting the fresh graves.

Gameplay:
This just might be the first LPB level to make my blood pressure rise without having a rage moment. I?m walking around and just left the house because 2 doors were locked. I sort of wish I had a map right now... I just walked into the mist?awesome! Uh-oh, it's really dark now and my flashlight doesn?t seem to be working??? Ahhh, the R3 button got it working. I won?t say much more, because I don't want to ruin anything.

Entertainment:
Real horror and suspense in LBP?Check. Let me know when the next part is out.

Replay Value:
The chapter system is set up perfect to keep this thing alive.

Overall Impression:
Yea and heart from me.

Here are a couple of F4F choices for me. Unless, you have a lot of time, I suggest the ?LITE? version. Thanks!

@L-I-M-I, I've devised a simple fix, but my controller is broken, and I need a new one. D: So, it will be redone and better for it as soon as possible. I'm going to black the screen, move him to the third row, use a follwer to move him in place, then he'll drop. Easy as pie.

EDIT:

Forgive my double post, but the Edit Post buitton won't load on this device? At any rate, Thanks for the extremely helpful reviews, all of you, and what features, weapons, and enemies would you like to see in the upcoming 5 chapters? Feedback would be great.

The level looks really nice. The visuals were good and the atmosphere was quite "creepy" for a LittleBIG Planet level In my opinion the Cam Zoom was a bit to poweful. I think It would be much better if you could see a bit more of the map.I felt a bit claustrophobic
But I really enjoyed playing it. Unfortunately I could not finish it but it's queued again so I won't forget about the level

Yeah, really nice atmosphere and game design, but I got kicked out of the controlinator after leaving the basement, I ended up standing on a red car and then the camera pulled away to the side and I was looking at road.2013-05-06 02:27:00

Already played. The most I liked the atmosphere. I felt like the old days when I traveled around the old alleys foggy Silent Hill.2013-05-07 08:12:00

Good news: The INFAMOUS AND HORRID Trapdoor Glitch has been fixed entirely. No more must you fear small ladders, for Edgar can now climb to and fro with total impunity!! Extra bonuses include improved navigation, and added dialogue for unused buttons. Publishing as I type!

Stay safe, and enjoy this, yeah?
