Making a whip

Archive: 6 posts

Hello fellows sacks,

As the title says, I'm looking for a way to create a whip in LBP2, as in DSKEmilio level Castlevania - Rondo of blood (http://lbp.me/v/ws0p3k).

http://ib.lbp.me/img/ft/07b9bb16bdd7d1ec246e01f0854327a5a70e26cd.jpg

Looks totally awesome. But I have another use in mind. However, to achieve it, I need to already know how it was done. I would ask DSKEmmanuel himself but apparently he is no longer in activity on LBPC.

What I have in mind for the moment is that it is a serie of holograms generated by a sequencer, giving the impression of a unfolding whip, probably with a danger chip on it. So, it looks like a whip, hits like a whip, but it has no physical interaction with the world.

What I need is a whip capable of attaching itself to a block, allowing the player to swing like on a liana, or of pulling that block in the player's direction. One of my idea is to re-do DSK's whip, which would generates a tag on the end, and a follower on the player, which would give some sort of "swing" when the tag disappears and the whip folds. Does it sounds correct to you? Also, have any ideas on how to have the whip to pull a block?

Thanks in advance!

I don't know logic to aim it, but it could emit a thin hologram at 0% Brightness with a 100% Dampening Antigrav on one end, tethered to an object the player auto grabs on the other, with the antigrav only active while the player grabs, and the same with a tag on the end that only activates when the player grabs. Blocks could be equipped with followers that do not move up/down or in/out, and follow the tag emitted by the whip, so as long as the player has the 'hold whip' button pressed, the block will follow it.

I'm not a logic expert, but I think that might work.

If you've ever played D4RKSM0K3HUNT3R's level Sweet Run (http://lbp.me/v/jttgxr) it contains a glitch that allows you to use the Poppit Cursor.

As you can see in this image:

ITARBOYI have also made a showcase level, where a special form of Sticker Panel is used as a bouncy material.

Level: Ideen (http://lbp.me/v/jt0jjn)

Hope that will help, try contacting them via PSN.

Thanks for your answers, I'm going to try these levels. As far as now, I generate a two-pieces hologram tethered by a string, with a block-follower on one end and a tag for the player-follower on the other end, and the results are pretty nice (while not perfect).
I'll come back later with pictures.

Alright, sounds great

It's a hard task, though with these kinds of goals it's hard to reach with the LBP Editor, I wished there was more bouncy materials that can actually bend and more advanced materials in general.

I will stay tuned for the updates!

Okay, here are the news: I managed to get a grappling-hook-lookalike and a whip-grabber. So, basically, I got the two functions I needed in two separate objects. But place to logic:

There is the infamous Lightning tether:

I'm explaining the logic there: when "Powers" (yellow detector) are enabled and R2 is pressed, the Tether (see below) is generated: two pieces of holo tethered by a rubber elastic. Its upper part follows immediately the turquoise tag (top left), stretching the elastic, so the bottom part (blue tag, for the follower on the sackbot, top right) is accompanying just after, acting like a rudimentary grappling hook.

By default, I set the Lightning tether emitted for 3 seconds, but if the player releases R2 before, the NOT gate on the bottom of top image sends a signal (pink tag) after 0.2 sec to make the tether disappearing smoothly.
Also, don't care of the red tag. It is here to cancel another function on the prototype while the tether is in use.

Even with basic settings, this configuration gives a pretty cool "swing". Tweak it for hours of innocuous entertainment.

And there is the Whip grabber, still pending for a cooler name:

Recognize the yellow tag that enable powers? Right? Now, forget it, it's just a random condition.
On this sackbot, when R2 is pressed, it emits a "grappling whip" (see below). It is a really basic object with decoration, and a tag on the end. The follower on the hilt side (bottom picture, left) follows the player's movements. When the whip comes close the cardboard box, it "grabs" it (meaning, the follower on the carboard box is following the tag on the whip). Tweak a lot the carboard follower and gravity tweaker for better results.

I also left the NOT gate to make the whip disappear when not in use (pink tag).
I haven't reproduced the unfolding movement of DSK's whip, because it is just a test for now, but for those who want to know how it is done, it is a 3-steps emitted-object sequence.

Are you still there? Because theses two objects... Now I need to combine them.
Why?
Just because, it has to be done.

I have tried many ideas that don't work:
- the Whip grabber stays stiff and doesn't rotate correctly when used like a swing,
- the Tether doesn't work when made of chains, strings, of chain of object tethered by strings, or bolts, because even with 100% strength it stretches in a weird manner and sometimes breaks,
- I could'nt make a Tether from a serie of small holos with followers neither,

So, if any of you have a great idea to get a "all-in-one use"-whip, let me know! If not, feel free to use these two ideas and experiment.
