Love Bot Kit (tutorial)

Archive: 12 posts

Get out of your Kart, get into your dreams!
Have you been wanting to build more traditional LBP style levels using the 3D editor, and have a character actually run around?
Try LBK - the Love Bot Kit (https://karting.lbp.me/v/b3sz) and the Template (https://karting.lbp.me/v/b3rn) level

1. Play Love Bot Kit (https://karting.lbp.me/v/b3sz) and collect all the prizes
2. Copy the LBK Template (https://karting.lbp.me/v/b3rn) level to your moon
3. Build your level from the Template, using the collected items. Need more scenery? Stop by Pooka's Popit (https://karting.lbp.me/v/b3rj)!
4. Turn off the Copy option before publishing your fabulous original level
5. Tell other creators about the Kit

The Love Bot character is a custom Kart (two karts, actually), with custom controls and cameras. The copyable LBK Template level contains Love Bot spawn points for 4 players with all the logic set up, and a custom HUD. The main Love Bot Kit level provides a collection of interactive objects for use in the Template level, and demonstrates each object. All these objects have a name beginning with LBK so they're easy to find in your popit.

In addition the the interactive LBK objects, you can use the normal in-game Buttons and Launch or Bounce Pads.
The Love Bot character is not compatible with in-game Power-Ups.

The kit provides a weapon power-up, which changes the player from normal to battle mode by activating a second custom Kart.
A speed power-up is also provided. This permanently increases the character's maximum running speed.

A few interesting problems I solved:

My Toggle didn't work! The interactive switches provided in the kit originally had a Toggle that served as the switch output. However, I found that the Toggle had weird glitches, for instance my Rotate Motor set to On/Off would accept from the Toggle as Directional - but only after it was activated twice. I replaced the Toggle with a two port Selector and used the Cycle input to mimic the on/off function of a Toggle.

Sackbot became slightly smaller when changing to the Battle Mode Kart Transformer, but only on the first changeover. The two Transformers are on a Selector, which is remotely activated by the Normal or Battle mode Power-Ups. I connected a 0.1 sec Timer to the Selector's Cycle input, then put the Selector on the opposite setting from how I want the player to start out. The Timer triggers a Kart change while the player is spawning at the race start, so you don't actually see it happen. This doesn't eliminate the size change glitch, simply get's it out of the way.

A problem I encountered when I first started working on this control system for Love Panda (https://lbpcentral.lbp-hub.com/index.php?t=78425-Love-Panda-(single-player-rpg)), is that the character (Kart) would "roll" instead of standing still on a slope. I solved the problem by using two Kartinators and a Selector switching between them. The 1st Kartinator has no acceleration or brake/reverse input, and without these inputs the Kart is unable to roll downhill. The 2nd Kartinator's acceleration and reverse are controlled by the L Stick. I connected the L Stick Up/Down output directly to the Selector's #2 input, and ran it through a Not Gate before connecting to Selector input #1. This way, the Kart is unable to more forward/backward unless the player is accelerating or decelerating with the L Stick.

Any questions?
About using the kit and template, or how and why I built this the way I did? Post here, and I'll answer.

Been looking forward to this! I can't come up with any questions until I have a look at it except this one: Were there any interesting problems you ran into while creating this, and how did you solve them? 2013-04-19 12:57:00

Lol, I had a boatload of problems! A few were interesting, in that I found solutions
Updated the OP

No, you can't have local split screen. The reason is that for 2 players the HUD doesn't work, and with 3-4 players the split screen fails entirely and only player 1 is visible. I don't know if that's a normal problem for the game, or if it's because of the custom HUD and cameras I've used.
Online multiplayer should work fine, although I haven't actually tested it

Not quite sure what you have against all those poor Sackboys that you decided to shoot instead of ghosts...

I've already said it to Pooka but this is definitely an amazing set of levels and I personally loved being able to play "The Gardens" in a first-person view in the Love Bot Tutorial level.

A thoroughly well-deserved crowning for Pookachoo for creating these levels and offering the tools to everybody to allow this idea to expand even more within the community!

Sorry Steven. My fault, I read it wrong and thought I just had to avoid the ghosts.

I don't have anything against them though.
