Language and Moderation

Archive: 17 posts

My next level has a lot of dialogue (which most testers find funny, thankfully). However, because I'm spending a hell of a lot of time working on it, I don't want my level to get moderated for possibly inappropriate level. StevenI told me that use of the work hell is excusable depending on the context, but I'm still not sure if this three dialogue bubbles are moderation worthy.

"I will send you to hell!" (in German, prior to being dropped down a shaft)

"Remember when you said "bitte tote mich" (please kill me)? Well it requires some effort on your part. Hau ruck, ubermensch!"

"Welcome to hell, may I take your order? Too bad, you're in hell!" (in a kitchen)

Seeing as the character saying these is trying to antagonize the player, I'm not sure if these are overly inappropriate. I don't use any real profanity, so what do you think? Am I good, or should I edit these to make them more palatable to a more easily offended crowd? Ideally I would be able to keep these, but I would much prefer something I spend 4+ months on to not get moderated.

I mean, hell is not that bad of a word but who knows what an overzealous parent / silly kid might think.

Tough call. You might check with StevenI again. ... but the 3rd one is hilarious.

Another thought is to change it to Hades. ...or maybe Cleveland. Some feel it is the same thing. lol

Generally you can get away with crap, hell, and **** (EDIT: Well FINE!) in all cases. One level even had ***** in it and got away with it, though you probably won't.

Trust me, I know how to grate on moderators.

Thing is, I don't want this level to lose an opportunity at a spotlight or pick because of three silly jokes. I want to keep them obviously so I'm just waiting for a reply.2013-04-19 15:37:00

I wouldn't risk it. Surely there is a good euphemism or tongue-in-cheek alternative to "hell"? In principle the word "hell" as a location is no problem ("heaven and hell" = ok, "go to hell you stupid ****er!" = ban) but principles have nothing to do with random gamers who might decide to push the grief button. There's no reason to risk losing your online access for several months because five or six people see an opportunity to complain.

Remember that censorship on Sony Playstation Network isn't about context until after the ban has already happened. It's an automatic process based on an algorithm of complaints x time x details, none of which are ever disclosed to the player. StevenL can reassure you that your language is safe, but that won't protect you from the algorithm. It will only expedite your return to PSN after you've been banned.

If it were me, I wouldn't risk it!

Well, you're using hell as a reference to... well.... hell. Like where you go when you die if you've been a naughty sack, rather than using it as a profanity eg "What the hell is this!". So I'd imagine that it should be alright.2013-04-19 16:15:00

Well, I could always change the text to [INSERT NEGATIVE AFTERLIFE HERE] and just keep the voice acting the same. Or better yet, [NEGITIVEN JENSEITS] might actually be funny.2013-04-19 16:34:00

Why is everyone questioning the use of "hell" when the obvious problem is the use of "your" instead of you're.

Also, if the question arises at all, it's probably better to just change it.

Edit:
Also, something like kill is less of a problem, I'd imagine, but it could be replaced with something like "eliminate" or "end."

Whoops, am not thinkin; write. am still think you am wrong

Don't worry, the grammar mistake is not in the level. The only grammar mistakes are German because I'm new to the language. That's actually the first time I made the 'your' mistake in ages. I'm worried.

I'm worried

And you should be. Use of the word palatable partially offsets the error, but you're on thin ice now. Watch your step...

Hm, that sounds the German are the bad boys

Btw.: if you want to use correct German "bitte tote mich" is wrong. You have to write: "bitte t?te mich"
"ubermensch" is wrong also. You have to write "?bermensch", but thats a rarely used word in German

Yeah, I kinda just rushed the post as I didn't feel like including the umlauts and proper capitalization at 12:00 at night because sleep deprivation. It's correct in game.

And no, the German AI is (partially) not the bad guy. It isn't a serious level in terms of narrative, so I wouldn't worry about it. More will be revealed soon enough. Thanks for the help everyone.

I decided to just change it to negative afterlife. It seems appropriate enough.

Sorry but I have to say somewhere...

Little Big Planet is a game where the words 'Computer' and 'Happened' are censored, but Hell is not?

With it's auto-censoring I swear, sometimes the game makes a saturday morning cartoon phrase for going to a toy store blipped out to where it's like you've just eaten three babies for lunch and are now trotting back to your evil skyscraper lair to drop boiling tar on tourist nuns.

Yeah, the censoring is weird, but mostly because it's censoring curse words from multiple languages.

I've decided against the potentially offensive humor. StevenI advised against it, so yeah. It's not worth risking the level or account over. My revisions should be funny though, hopefully.
