A.I. Grappling hook?

Archive: 5 posts

I have a boss that I want to use a grappling hook when he gets knocked out of the arena. Obviously, the included grappling hook doesn't work for sackbots (one of the many bot-related decisions that I REALLY wish Mm hadn't made!), so I set about constructing my own. My results have been.... unsatisfactory.

What I want:
First, I want it to look at least semi-natural: it shouldn't look like the boss is zip-lining straight to the grapple's anchor point and ignoring gravity along the way. So there should be a bit of a swing going on.

Second, I want it to be strong enough to catch the boss mid-fall. Once it's attached, the boss should not be able to move further away from the anchor.

What I've tried:
I have a bit of invisible material joined to a piece of sticker panel by a string. The string is for looks and serves no actual function (and I may replace it with elastic or a winch). The invisible material is grabbable and uses followers to home in on the anchor point. The sticker is deco'd to look like a claw and it zips right to the anchor point as soon as it's deployed. Once the claw "attaches" (detects the anchor point and activates 100% dampening), the followers on the other piece activate.

This just doesn't work very well. The boss is kinda' heavy and the grabbable bit is pretty light so I used two followers (to increase strength) and another mover set to go up (to help overcome gravity) along with a .1s timer hooked to a 99% dampening tweaker to slow his fall enough for the movers to start lifting him. It kinda' works under ideal circumstances but is wildly unpredictable in actual gameplay since the boss won't necessarily be falling at a given speed (he may simply have slipped off the ledge or he may have fallen from a higher one, and he may have been pushed pretty hard and have some pretty fast lateral momentum to overcome).

I've tried tweaking the timing and strength of the dampening: too much and he just freezes unnaturally in the air but too little and it just doesn't work.

I've come to the conclusion that my design is crap and needs to be tossed out in favor of something else entirely. Has anybody rigged a convincing and effective sackbot grappling hook and can you give me advice on how to make it work?

I made one for a player controller sackbot back when the psn was offline for that month or so, but as yet have not gotten around to making a level using it, it was made for a spider man Web swing using a wire for the Web, and behaves very close to sackboy grapple for example is affected by gravity and allows you to reel it in or out while hanging etc. Too much to explain right now but happy to show u in game later2013-04-15 02:38:00

I haven't done anything like this, but i think you would want to use a piston not set to stiff, instead of using movers. it would let him swing more natural.2013-04-15 06:23:00

i believe that one is a zipline, sehven said it shouldn't look like he is ziplining straight toward the anchor

@sehven i sent you an example via psn
