Crustocean Cove is a bit of an experiment and as such, I hope people will forgive me if it's not as well put together as some of my other work - while the level is, for the most part, a platformer, it does not follow the typical A-to-B level structure we're used to.
The level dumps players roughly in the centre of the level and leaves them to wander.

Players will quickly find Cpt. Hugebeard and his broken Scoreboard!
Hugebeard propositions the player explaining that if they can find enough Treasure Chests around the level, he'll fix the Scoreboard and players can complete the level.

Thus the adventure begins! There are several residents around Crustocean Cove who either have a problem for Sackthing to help them with, advice for finding Treasure, or minigames.

Ms. Krabby has lost her favourite collection of 7 Seashells! They are scattered around the level, can you find them?

Poor Cpt. Seasick! His Tavern is struggling to pay the bills, no customers and no grog! Perhaps a certain seasponge can lend a hand?

Noisy The Seagulls Balloon Shooting Minigame! Beat her score and win a prize! Don't hang around too long, though, look at the mess!
Bleh, seagulls are gross.

Stuck and can't find any treasure? Find Archie The Anchor and maybe he'll have some useful tips!

Why not help out with some town construction, or go for a ride in the clouds?
Even if you're not finding treasure, there are a few things you can play around with to amuse yourself.
This level may be a little time-consuming to 100%, but 6 Treasure Chests won't take too long.
There are a total of 8 chests in the level, so you're not forced to do all of the harder challenges.

My aim with creating this level was just to see if open-world levels are really a feasible idea.
Personally, I love the concept and would love to see more skilled platformer level authors try their hand at this idea.

Have fun guys and do let me know how you get on!

Queued instantly once you mentioned it was an adventure style level. More levels need to be this way.2013-04-14 04:15:00

Thanks man, and yeah, I agree, there aren't many open-world levels.
I saw Lbphart try the idea a few months ago. I'd wanted to try it for a while, but his level is what made me go and actually put one together.
I only think of a few others like this, but they're LBP1 levels and I don't remember the names nor authors.

Yay, that was fun!

It was very enjoyable and funny to play your level
Unfortunatelly that balloon/zeppelin doesn't work. Hm, I know this from my own levels: you play it twenty times and everything works proper and the twentyoneth time something break.
However: I enjoyed playing it

Very good level

Well, the airship isn't broken, it's just that you are required to patch up the holes before the balloon will begin to rise.
However, in fairness, there isn't much to suggest that you need to do that, so I've added a sign that has the Popits Sticker icon on it. Hopefully that will clue players in.

Anyways, thanks for playing, even if you didn't have much luck.

Also, while I was at it, I added a few meanies I'd planned on adding before.
An invincible, spikey clam that rolls around the environment, and a pink squid that shoots paint around. When the paint hits something, it leaves a cloud of horrible gas for a few seconds.

You have certainly set out to challenge players with this level (not a bad thing btw!). Anyone expecting a relaxing wander around some nice scenery with the odd fun minigame thrown in will have a shock. As you know from our exchange on Twitter, I played last night with WES initially and then Deadmn joined in too. We must have spent over an hour getting to grips with the different tasks and exploring the map. We finally gave up after completing 7 tasks. We just couldn’t spot task 8 and had run out of steam by then anyway - lightweights, I know!

We had a lot of fun playing, no doubt about that, but I think you may have underestimated the time and effort required to finish even 6 of the 8 tasks, let alone all of them. Some of the tasks were challenging in themselves (sandcastle maze, for example) but others, while straightforward as an idea, just took a lot of time to do and/or were a little fiddly. I think we spent most time simply transporting grog to the tavern. The airship is fun to fly but it is not very manoeuvrable which meant we got stuck under overhanging ledges etc quite a lot, not helped by the grappling hook itself sticking to every surface it touched, not just the boxes of grog. Also those clouds- arrghh, lol! If we flew high to try and avoid getting snarled up in the scenery, we had a quite uncanny knack for bumping into a cloud and getting zapped (or at least I got zapped, WES seemed immune!). The problem is that if you lose your box of grog it’s quite a performance going back to get it all over again and if it happens a couple of times with each box then it can become pretty time consuming!

The seagull mingame was fun and original too with the bouncing bomb aspect to it. Even with WES’s sharp shooting, though, it took quite a few attempts to beat it. I don’t think we had any issue with that btw – it just again adds to the overall time in the level.

The other tasks we managed were finding the seashells, re-locating the tavern, destroying the pirate ship, taking out those flamethrowers (with your pic on them, lol!) and extinguishing the fires in the village, and finally, the sandcastle maze. We loved the sandcastle puzzle – such a cool idea but it was a tough challenge to beat. We just about managed it between the 3 of us with some fast swimming and coordinated sponge grabbing but we lost a shed load of points there because we ran out of air and died so many times. You mentioned on Twitter that there are bubble dispensers hidden not far away in the level but we failed to spot them and just went all out without any air *facepalm* It was chaotic but hilarious! Perhaps a clue near the sandcastle would help with that. I know the anchor refers to airconditioning but that reference is a bit obscure – well it was to us.

I hope this doesn’t sound negative. It’s an awesome level. The scenery and funny characters were great and I loved the free roam element and the idea of having the challenges to complete. It just became a bit of a marathon effort. There comes a point when you have already invested so much time in the level that you don’t want to quit without completing it, because otherwise that effort is for nothing. This certainly drove us on, anyway and we would have done the 8th and last challenge too if we had been able to spot it.

Huge kudos to you for trying something different with this level. I agree that it would be great if more creators attempted something similar. Was it Rangerzero’s level you were thinking of from LBP1, maybe?

Anyway, as someone said in their ingame review, it was a long and hard journey but it was very satisfying to get there in the end (apart from that 8th task sadly…. (Actually I also loved the review that said it was like Grand Theft Auto but with shellfish! )

Clam Theft Auto?

....... sorry, that was the best I could come up with.

Looks intriguing though, will give it a go!

Thanks for your time, I really appreciate it. Both here in the thread and the time spent in-game.
From what I can gather, the task you missed was the hidden chest located in the... nevermind I'll edit this out.
I honestly feel you've done really well to have found 7 of the 8. However, because of this, I've reduced the required number of chests to 4, as I mentioned on Twitter. That ought be much more reasonable. People who want to complete more can do so for high scores, but it's totally optional.

I'll work on making the Sandcastle challenge easier to figure out. Probably with the use of a sign that is found both outside the castle and by the air dispensers.
The dispensers are miles away, though, they're just above the Taverns original position. They can be picked up by the airship fairly easily. However, I'll make it easier to get up there.

I'll make the level terrain non-stick so that players can only grab objects rather than accidentally stick themselves to the stage.
Even I have found that to be a pain in the butt at times.

And thanks for appreciating the effort in trying something a bit different.
I will have to check rangerzero's Earth and see if it was his level I rememeber. I'll let you know via Twitter or on here, if it was.
And yeah, I lol'd at radishlords GTA comment. I think he must've been playing a different game entirely.

I love the Banjo Kazooie series. While this level isn't a direct remake or reference to Treasure Trove Cove, I do think my love of the BK series has strong influences on the way I put the level and it's inhabitants together.
