Doggy's Art Thread

Archive: 40 posts

I've never really had an art thread on LBPC before so I figured it's about time I made one, a proper one.

To kick off here's a quick 40min drawing I did the other day. I'm going to be making a set of these little characters.

10 points to whoever notices the huge mistake in the drawing.

Close but no cigar, fire creates light rather than blocks it so wouldn't have a shadow of it's own.

Thanks man, that's exactly what I thought lol

Any other drawings you can post? The psychotic derping flamethrower needs some friends!

Excellent drawing! You did a great job

The mistake is: as everybody knows, flamethrowers normally have 12 teeth instead of 9.
Bam! Gotcha!

Really nice, I know I'd be excited if my head was on fire. Probably not smiling though.
As for the mistake, I can't really think of one, but is the flame supposed to come out like that? Like, straight out of the tank? Is that it? I always saw it come out of the gun thingy:

Or should the fire be affecting the shading? I'm not sure. :U Still a great drawing nonetheless.

Hmm, I'm sure I have something around. At the moment I have a lot of drawing but they're all works in progress, I 'spose I could throw some of those up or some old stuff. I'll see what I can find

And don't worry he'll get some friends, I have bigger plans for this drawing.

Thank you so much avundcv (I won't even attempt to pronounce that)

Haha, I lost it at the teeth. I'm not well versed in flamethrower anatomy

Lol, thanks mate.
Yeah, it would usually come out of some kind of gun, but honestly I just thought it looked cuter and funnier this way. The idea of flames pouring out the top of his head just really sold for me!

As for the real mistake, the shadows on the character are to the right, but the shadow of the character is to the left. Pretty fundamental mistake but surprising how not obvious it is.

I'll try to post something up tomorrow if I can.

SR20, it's great to see you're back! Or at least...more active.. Anywho, I haven't seen you in a while, so it's great to see you started up your very own art thread. (The 3D models one will be missed however. ) I love this character you've drawn, the color and shading is just great, and his psychotic goofiness really makes it shine.(what with the eyes staring off into opposite directions and his arms and legs flailing about)

I know this is probably going to sound embarrassing, but what program is that? I got a tablet a while back and with summer approaching, I'll finally be able to set it up and start using it, and it looks very useful. (and probably very expensive)

Thanks man good to be back (even though I did disappear again for a month or so, irl issues).

I can almost guarantee you'll be seeing more, better than ever, 3D models from me and possibly some basic 3D animations too.
Thank you so much, I'm glad you like it

I'm probably too late but I'll answer anyway. I'm using the full version of Photoshop CS5 here (I was able to get the CS5 creative suite for free, thank god!)* , honestly, it's way more than I would ever need for this kind of drawing but it's nice to have the flexibility for other things (namely actual photo editing).

*I'm not sure how many people actually believe me when I tell them that.

Anyway, this thread is in dire need of an update! So here goes

Here's the very beginnings of a drawing I'd like to get printed out once I finish it.

I've also had an idea for I game I'd like to create.
I can't code games at all, but I can design and draw them, and who knows maybe I could teach myself enough to make it one day. Gotta aim high right? These are just some rough sketches of some brainstorming.

I don't what type of game it would be but it's kind of a re-imagined 8bit-stlye, role playing, puzzle, platformer, zombie game. Which is probably one the most ridiculous sounding things but I'm hoping to get some basic 3D mock-ups of the game done which should explain things much better than I can in words

No worries mate, I've already started work on the 3D mock-up, though a lot of it was trial and error which hasn't left much to actually show. I'll be sure to post an update when there is

In other news I've begun forcing myself to draw at least once a day, and to help me with this I bought myself some goodies. As you can tell I've spared no expense, spending almost 6 whole dollars

http://i875.photobucket.com/albums/ab311/SR20DETDOG/Everypony%20Art%20Thread/Cheap-Art-Supplies_zps3197e556.jpg

I went through a big dry spell of doing barely any art so now I'm trying to play catch up. A bunch of pens and some pocket sized notepads mean I'll have pen and paper with me constantly to jot down ideas straight away.

I've always loved using cheap pen and paper to draw, I don't feel compelled to always create a master piece when drawing with cheap supplies. Having a limited palette (Blue, Red & Black) also forces me to simplify my drawings and makes for a nice little challenge.
Anyway, I should probably post up some art, so here's a little sketch I did last night

I wish I had something to post up but everything is at a half finished stage right now
And now I do, I finished this sketch last night before I went to bed, it's the first picture in the notepads I bought.

If my game really existed, this is something that would feature in it.

http://i875.photobucket.com/albums/ab311/SR20DETDOG/Note%20Pad%20Sketches/8-Wheel-Train-WEB_zps23ca6967.jpg

I've got to say, I really love the style that comes from the 3 colour pens. I've not done an entire scene in this style before so there's quite a lot I'd do differently if I were to do it again, but for a experimental first attempt, well I'm pretty pleased with the result.

It does give the drawing a very unique style. As for the Console Wars, you can read all about it by clicking here (https://lbpcentral.lbp-hub.com/index.php?t=80697-The-Console-Wars-Reloaded-Sign-ups-CLOSED), and see it in action by clicking here (https://lbpcentral.lbp-hub.com/index.php?t=80845-The-Console-Wars-Reloaded). It's well and truly time for an update me-thinks,

I've been continuing designing elements of the zombie game I mentioned earlier, just finished drawing some concepts of the various types of fuel the player will collect and use in the game. Although, the style of drawing I used here is nothing like what I have in mind for the game to look like (it will have a more simplified, almost cartoonish, 3D modelled look), I simply wanted to try out some new brushes I downloaded and practiced some techniques I've been learning recently.

And had a bit of fun with the fonts

EDIT: Fixed the word spacing, much better now : )
http://i875.photobucket.com/albums/ab311/SR20DETDOG/Note%20Pad%20Sketches/Zombie%20Game/Collectable-Fuels_zpsd0bb0b8b.jpg
http://i875.photobucket.com/albums/ab311/SR20DETDOG/Note%20Pad%20Sketches/Zombie%20Game/Collectable-Fuels_zpsd0bb0b8b.jpg

So basically these are the 5 different fuels types available, compressed air will be a 6th fuel source, however this is not something the player will be able to collect but instead have to produce themselves. These are simply the collectable fuels, thus compressed air has been excluded, and why it wouldn't have an image anyway.

EDIT: Thought I may as well throw up a current WIP, still in the process of working out the values.
http://i875.photobucket.com/albums/ab311/SR20DETDOG/InPro4_zps3a6a24bc.jpg

I actually did the sketch for this roughly a year ago but lost interest in it and never went any further, just recently I've decided to pick it up again and hopefully finish it.

Hey wow, the embedded image makes them look like they were actually rendered in 3D! I was surprised when I had to get up close and view the full image to see the brush strokes. Nice work!

The obsessive compulsive in me is freaking out about the word spacing, though!

Wow, thank you! I've been practicing my lighting lately, I guess the practice has paid off

Argh, Don't remind me! It was the last thing I did and by then I was over it and really not caring, why is "electricity" such a long word! (I'll more than likely fix the word spacing to save me cringing each time I look at it.)

The shadows on the ground are all different angles too  but they are only there so the objects don't appear to float.

I could've sworn those objects were rendered in 3D . Anyways, it's nice to know you're still working on this. Just pick up some programming skillz and a soundtrack guy (if you need help with soundtracks, I'll be willing to pitch in music) and you might end up some big hot-shot indie dev. Wouldn't that be nice ?2013-08-12 17:03:00

Yep, ideas are all starting to mesh together now, which really helps provide direction. I've spent all morning working out more details, very little drawing though, mostly writing down ideas.

Programming and audio are the 2 things I can't do myself. I'm pretty sure I can teach myself enough programming knowledge given time but I'm useless when it comes to music, at most I could make some simple sound effects

I think I mentioned earlier that I want the game to hark back the to classic 8-bit games, a modern reimagining of sorts. I'd like that theme to apply to the music as well, think 8-bit Hans Zimmer.

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=84DZr9f4ciI

Recognition would be nice, I don't think I'd want to become famous though! I'm too introverted for that.

I think it's well and truly time this thread had an update. As per usual I haven't completed anything instead just piling up the beginnings of projects, but here's the most recent one. 3D models and fractals this time

So I'm sure it's no surprise I like to design things Lately I've been designing a city based upon fractals. (FYI: Fractals are geometric shapes that look identical (or similar) at any level of magnification and have infinite complexity) So perfect for a city! In fact cities can already be modeled as fractals, only they tend to be very messy, whereas mine is very ordered.

This is a little model I through together of the first 'iteration'.
http://i875.photobucket.com/albums/ab311/SR20DETDOG/City%20Design/FirstVillageRender_zps49dc5854.jpg
Fairly unremarkable on its own but,

This is the fractal pattern it's based on, every colour is a new iteration. So imagine one of these little 'villages' at every red area, and increasingly larger and more complicated versions of it at all the orange, yellow & green areas.
http://i875.photobucket.com/albums/ab311/SR20DETDOG/City%20Design/CityFractal_zps6af8fa25.gif
This pattern was a nightmare to figure out, I feel like I've seen enough hexagons for a lifetime!

Hopefully there'll be more to these 3D models soon, with more detail and fancier textures and lighting

PS. the program I used for both of these was Rhino 3D.

Dusted off the ol' camera today and did a bit of shooting. While doing some yard work I had a sudden flash of inspiration for a small time lapse video. This is my first attempt at a photographic time lapse so the quality is...
...a little lacking  Mostly due to not owning an intervalometer, I guess I should have expected a few blurry shots when taking 300 photos by hand! The ending is also abrupt, someone forgot to check how much free space was on the card!

All things considered, I think it turned out alright.

Whoops!

Update time!
Starting with dogs
Decided it was time to finally stop avoiding drawing animals, so I've been trying to develop my own K9 character. So far it's going pretty well, though I'm still only at the head.
http://i875.photobucket.com/albums/ab311/SR20DETDOG/Drawing-Dogs-WIP-Web_zps96ebe872.jpg

Back at the landscapes again, trying not to get too picky with the details, they're always my undoing but I just love them too much! Still very much a WIP right now.
http://i875.photobucket.com/albums/ab311/SR20DETDOG/Land-WIP-Web_zpsf2817bea.jpg

And lastly a really quick mockup I threw together of a draw I'm making as part of a bedside table, sometimes you've just got to get away from the desk and get your hands dirty. The draws will be made from old tin cans riveted together, for a kind of old industrial look. (http://gametextures.com/media/catalog/product/cache/1/small_image/225x/9df78eab33525d08d6e5fb8d27136e95/3/d/3dpreview_23_7.png) The frame itself will be made of wood, still deciding whether to simply oil the wood or cover it with more cans.
http://i875.photobucket.com/albums/ab311/SR20DETDOG/Rivetted-Tin-Can-Draw-Mockup_zpse89250b6.jpg

I've also been doing some 3D mock-ups of the the zombie game, so stay tuned for those

Photo manipulation this time

I designed what I imagine a ute (or pickup) version of the VW Golf would look like.
EDIT: So I've since discovered that VW Golf utes actually exist (http://upload.wikimedia.org/wikipedia/commons/thumb/9/9e/20041020_1303_1539-VW_Golf1-Caddy.jpg/800px-20041020_1303_1539-VW_Golf1-Caddy.jpg), well at least it was fun to make, and just personally I think mine is the better looker

The original image.

So of course I forgot to charge the camera battery for the lunar eclipse but I did go out the next night to get some snaps of the full moon. Picked out the best of the lot and the end result is pretty decent I think

I was also going to post a bunch drawings I did of buildings & structures but just realised I have no idea where they are, so instead here's a few second of time lapse photography, this was only to test a new method of stabilising the video.

Thanks dude, it's probably the best photo I've taken technique wise and certainly the one I'm most proud of.

Ehh, no artwork I can think of off the top of my head, plenty of unfinished stuff but I've been pretty slack with my art lately. I've also been teaching myself woodworking which has been sucking up a lot of time but I guess it is creative so here's my first attempt at woodworking

They turned out pretty decent all things considered, strong and square at least. I'm currently halfway though making a computer desk.

Oh and I took a new photo of the full moon, improved my method a bit and managed to get a lot more detail.

And here's a short one-point perspective animation loop which was a test for a small project that's in the works.

Jeez, no wonder I never seem to finish anything, I just vomit out a chunky mess of creative ideas. I have tomorrow off so maybe I'll spend it actually finishing some projects.

PS-Love that you're reppin' the Christmas vibe, I haven't taken down my tree yet
