The Abandoned Caverns

:star:Thankyou for the Spotlight!! LBPC rules :star:

Hi fellow sack folk! Arastoph here with a new level (it has been a long time)
After the success of "Mines of Boreas" i have decided to stick with the underground theme but this time made it far more platform based rather than a level that plays itself.

"Hollow, flooded and dark, the abandoned caverns of Mt Garusak still show signs of a once thriving mining industry. While the machines and explosives still remain, the miners themselves have vanished but never returned home..."

Powerups used - Grappling Hook
Level Length - 5 Minutes
Creation Time - 1 Week
Secrets to be found - 8
Prizes - Ace and 100% collect, additional prizes around as well as prizes for how many secrets you obtain

The level consists of areas above and below water and i also used portals to make a pipe network around the underwater section.

Fun level with good deco and gameplay. Not so much platforming as it was progreesion and puzzle, but a good pace and elements that fit the theme. The water section nearly ended it for me. The spikey wheel thing was difficult to say the least. A few switches were hard to see as well, maybe some invisible lighting? Great work and you did it in a week! Keep it up!2013-04-09 22:05:00

thanks for the pointers! i will add a few lights to the scene! Also i may slow down the "wheel of death spikes" underwater but that can allow people to bypass the inner section if im not careful, i dont really want to remove it as i love the use of the thin layer to stop your sackbot popping back out into the way of the spikes!
rather proud of it lol

I wouldn't slow it down, I had issues with the part you grab to layer switch, it was too small maybe?2013-04-10 00:41:00

That has now been done! the layer switch sponge is now positioned in a much better place for the player to grab hold of and another 25% bigger. After a few test runs i can safely say it still provides a slight challenge but it is no longer "rip your hair out" infuriating!! ^_^
Thanks so much for the feedback it helps so much towards upcoming level design testing

Really fun level, Arastoph. Had a blast playing through it a few times. Good visuals, very good obstacles and diverse gameplay. Nice to hear that old PotC music again.
I liked your clever placement of secret bubbles too. Still only found 5 of them, so I'll be back for the rest.

Some of you may also be happy to know that "the abandoned caverns 2" is currently under construction as well after a successful launch to this series! A few people have already started testing some of the earlier segments of the level and it should be complete within this month *fingers crossed*

I am currently in need of some testers for the first section of the second part in the series just to see if the puzzles are not too dificult and the level flows correctly.
If anyone would like to be a tester please send me a pm for the code to my level "arastophs lockbox" but please understand that i am trusting you not to share the code with anyone else, enter the level with someone else or take any photos of the level while playing it.
The more amount of feedback you can provide me after playing it the better!! Thanks!
I will give the code to the first 5 players who pm me after that i should not need any more testers!

Wow... This is something I wasn't ready for. In a good way.

This was a really, really, really good level. The first thing that really caught me into it was the atmosphere. The second I entered the level I was sucked into its own world, with great lighting and really beautiful design. While the concept of a sort of factory-kind of thing inside a cave isn't brand new, it really worked here and the materials used to bring it up were great. I mean, better than usual. The details were everywhere and even if the visuals really got into way at times, the level was beautiful and should not be made in any other way. The underwater parts looked haunting and the clusterphobic atmosphere left a good impression on me. However, the use of extra-layers glitch here felt uninspired and just boring, as if it was there just to be there.

Audio-wise this level was good as well. The Deep Blue Quay is among the best music tracks in the game, even though I think that Tea by the Sea would have fit better into the fast parts. The sound effects were everywhere and they made the level feel more organic. However, there is a flip-side here. The level's sound effects, while many, never left an impact on me. As if the ways you used them could have been better, or as if there were better sound effects to use here to begin with. Also, if you really had put more work here an made an entirely own musics t could have worked even better than using the interactive music track, even though it is awesome.

The gameplay was the most positive surprise here. The fast, intelligent use of grapple hook in the surface-parts and the great, slow and clusterphobic gameplay in the underwater parts were a great contrast and they both would have also worked individually. The few puzzles here were a little out of place, and slowed the surface parts unnecessarily. They worked underwater, where the gameplay was slow to begin with, but they didn't work on the surface. Also, this level has huge amounts of content in it, which is a good thing. I got six out of eight secrets and even though I felt like the prices were unnecessary, there may be other people who disagree with me.

All in all, this level is a blast and I will play it again sometime. It's definitely worth checking out and it's the best level I have played this month.

Visuals: 8/10
Audio: 8/10
Gameplay: 9/10
Conclusion: 8,3/10 Awesome!

It's a really good level. It is. However, if you felt like something I said here was unfair, feel free to oppose me and comment on that. Also know, that these are only my opinions and there are certainly other people out there who feel differently about this.

PS: I have no need for F4F, as I have nothing out that needs feedback. I just like to review levels.

That review is spot on! i totally agree i need to work on my skill with sound placement and i would have custom music for my levels... if i was any good at making music lol i am lucky if i can string three notes together and make it sound better than a flatulent whale.
I don't normally use the extra layers glitch but i wanted to add an extra sense of depth to the mines, like they had been used for a while and made extra hollow. I felt without the extra layers it seemed too flat, too open and no where near as claustrophobic.
Finally in regards to the above water puzzles i found the level too short without something to keep the player entertained and i wanted something to create the transition between the two stages of the level. The explosive cart that needs to be dragged, for me is a great addition as it not only creates an objective for the player but it also guides them through the level due to its limitations on the tracks. Also through camera work the kart shows the direction the player needs to take after pressing particular buttons and throwing the cart off the edge.
I am glad you took the time to write such a great review i really appriciate it and i hope you stick around to see its sequel when it arrives in around a month (give or take a week lol)

Also BIG thanks to the LBPC spotlight crew for spotlighting my level you guys are so dedicated and awesome, i hope i can wow you again soon as i have something big planned for later this year. <3
