Prequel to the other games, made by Warner Bros Montreal (not rocksteady) to be released this year for current gen consoles.

Well. Thoughts?

The first details regarding Batman: Arkham Origins are now available through the latest issue of Game Informer.
Origins marks the series’ first entry not handled by Rocksteady. Instead, Warner Bros. Montreal has been assigned with handling the franchise’s future.
So what should fans expect? Read on below for a detailed summary from Game Informer’s report. You can also find the first screenshots in the gallery.

Story
- Takes place on Christmas Eve
- Years before the previous two games
- Mob boss Black Mask will give a fortune for Batman’s head
- Top assassins and supervillains from the DC Comics universe are out to get Batman
- Cops on the take from the mob join the manhunt as well
- Batman needs to outsmart his enemies, find out why Black Mask wants him dead, and prove to what good cops that he’s on their side
General
- Porting Arkham City to Wii U let the team get familiar with Unreal 3
- Doing a prequel lets the team carve a unique territory if Rockstaready were to move the Arkham timeline ahead down the road
- Rocksteady’s project is tightly under wraps
- Younger Batman also “gives us the opportunity to refresh things a bit”
- Combat system still in place
- Will have “new layers, new opportunities, and new tactics”
- New enemy types
- Batman not as finely honed as in the previous games
- Won’t control the Batwing directly
- Batwing will figure into story sequences and acts as a universe-appropriate form of fast travel
- Has the traditional predator mode in which players swing from perch to perch, glide kick, string guys upside-down, etc.
- New remote claw that is like the grappler in Just Cause 2
- Batman targets two objects and fires out a claw
- This hooks into the first object and launches another claw and rope to the second object
- Can then pull the two objects together
- Use this to knock enemies together, slam heavy objects into foes, string objects or people under a perch
- Can string up an explosive barrel under a perch, lure enemies with a sonic batarang, then cut the rope with a normal batarang, dropping the explosive on their heads
- Team knows Black Mask isn’t the most popular villain
- Old Gotham is only half of the game world
- Another new entire is across the bridge called New Gotham
- New Gotham is classier and has much taller skyscrapers
- New zone doubles the size of the game world
- Players can dismantle the hacked tower network
- Towers emit a jamming signal that prevents the Batwing from flying into the area, meaning no fast travel
- It also halts Batman’s sensors from placing points of interest on the map
- Taking down the towers are varied and require all of Batman’s navigation, puzzle solving, and combat skills
- Some can be taken down quickly, others must be returned to later with an upgrade
- “Crime in Progress”: ex – saving some cops from a group of thugs, rescuing a snitch from being tossed off a roof
- Activities give Batman a chance for experience point bonuses
- Completing side quests also contributes to the GCPD’s understanding and appreciation of Batman
- They will begin to know Batman and which side he stands on based on how much you take on the optional missions
- Most Wanted system gives players a chance to go after villains outside of the core storyline
- These optional side missions can be tackled when you discover them
- Many optional missions offer upgrades
- Batman’s butler Alfred may notice that he had a tough time in that situation and give him a new gadget
- Dark Knight system is slightly more behind the scenes, though it’s still important
- Dark Knight system provides a lengthy string of tasks that slowly goes up in difficulty as the game progresses
- The team wants to avoid boring tutorials while still training players to be masters of predator and combat systems
- Complete a certain number of counters or silent takedowns to receive XP rewards or a specific upgrade
- Dark Knight system doesn’t replace challenge mode
- Team wants to make challenges more meaningful
Game demo
- Takes place about an hour into the game
- Batman is perched above Jezebel plaza
- Black Mask’s assassins have stirred up the local thugs
- No towering walls keeping villains in check and many citizens call Arkham City home since there isn’t a prison
- Amusement Mile hasn’t been flooded
- Batman is looking to find out why Black Mask is trying to kill him
- Batman decides to go to the party to track down Penguin, who hears about everything
- Eventually, Penguin gives some intel on a murder at Lacey Towers
- Claw grips Batman’s ankle and drags him out of the room before he can finish his questioning
- Batman reaches for the door, but his arm is stomped by a mysterious figure
- Batman ends up suspended upside-down from the rafters
- Deathstroke circles Batman with a drawn sword
- Batman blocks and disarms Deathstroke, using the sword to cut himself free
- Thanks to Penguin’s tip, Batman goes to Lacey Towers
- The cops say it’s a double homicide
- One victim is supposedly Black Mask
- Inside the apartment, Batman sees Black Mask’s girlfriend strung up on a chandelier
- Black Mask’s assumed body is laying face up across the room
- Batman goes into first-person detective vision to examine the situation

Why aren't Rocksteady involved?

There were plenty of clues and Easter Eggs in Arkham City about Scarecrow's new evil plot. And then there's Azrael's prophecy. Surely they are working on a sequel for next-gen consoles while this Warner Bros dev is making a prequel.

I just hope they know what they're doing. I don't want this series to become as watered down as Assassin's Creed.

Batman: Arkham Origins isn’t the only new Batman game in development. Armature Studio is also working on Origins Blackgate, a new entry in the series for the 3DS and PlayStation Vita. Game Informer has first information about Blackgate in this month’s issue. You can find images and details summarized below along with screenshots. There’s even more in Game Informer, so we highly advise that you take a look at this the publication’s May issue.

- Warner Bros. wanted to have a 2.5D-style Arkham game in the style of Metroidvania
- The company chose Armature because the studio was familiar with that style of game
- Takes place after the end of Origins
- Set on the isolated island at the Blackgate Penitentiary
- Prison uprising has occurred
- Intro level in Gotham
- Batman goes to Blackgate in order to put a stop to the riot
- 2D animatics with full voices tell the story
- Batman moves through a side-scrolling game world
- He’ll pick up near gear and take on enemies along the way
- Interconnected passages and prison secrets
- Not focused on leveling up abilities like the console games
- Instead, it stays true to the subgenre’s formula
- All of Batman’s improvements came through gear pick-ups and upgrades
- Team wanted to give players more of a sense of collection
- Mostly set along a 2D plane
- Takes full advantage of the visual three-dimensionality of the environments
- Explore, fight, and interact with the foreground abnd background
- Can grapple up to gargoyles on a background balcony while a crowd of armed inmates pass by
- Enemies will go after Batman from all angles
- Go to the foreground or background to tackle a designed foe
- Combat similar to the console Batman games
- Button taps to attack, counter, and use gear are in place
- Freeflow combat system
- Built from the ground up
- Batarang: stun enemies or hit distant objects
- Line launcher: cross wide gaps
- Explosive gel variation: shoot from a launcher onto spots around the screen
- This lets you get involved with entertaining takedowns such as dropping a chandelier on enemies from above
- More gadgets will also be in the game
- Has a version of the predator mode
- Game has a few more layers of feedback
- Ex: can see the sightlines of enemies
- This lets you know if enemies can see you or not
- Same kind of vantage points, floor grates, silent takedowns, glide kicks, weapon use, and breakable walls as in the console games
- Game is split into various sections
- Each can be accessed once you figure out a way inside
- No save rooms
- Modern checkpoint system
- Can manually save whenever you desire
- Can defeat the bosses in any ordder if you find out where you want to go
- “We don’t want you to break the game, but if you can exploit it in a certain way that we haven’t thought of, that’s awesome. So it’s conceivable the players will have abilities that don’t necessarily jibe that great with the boss. We’ve taken some cues from other games where if you have a particular item against a boss, you’ll just rip them a new one, but we don’t tell you what that item is”
- Will have detective mode
- Tap a button and the screen fades into a digitized overlay with detailed info
- Green enemies: enemies haven’t seen you
- Red enemies: enemies are onto your location
- Move a reticle around the screen to focus Batman’s attention
- Can use this to uncover secrets
- Uncover clues and analyze dangerous situations in detective mode

There were plenty of clues and Easter Eggs in Arkham City about Scarecrow's new evil plot. And then there's Azrael's prophecy. Surely they are working on a sequel for next-gen consoles while this Warner Bros dev is making a prequel.

I just hope they know what they're doing. I don't want this series to become as watered down as Assassin's Creed.

What I'm most worried about is that Paul Dini isn't involved with this one. He was the writer for both Asylum and City, and even before that he was already well-established as one of the better latter-day Batman writers as he worked on Batman: The Animated Series (as well as a number of other DC Animated Universe series) and even had a stint as the writer for Detective Comics a while back.

While I always felt that the weakest part of the previous games were their plots, they were still servicable for the most part and more importantly Dini seems to understand how to portray the the majority of the characters (except Bane maybe) in ways that made them faithful to source material.

I'm also curious as to how they'll handle the fact that this game takes place in Batman's early days, and presumably in a more antiquated Gotham, while simultaneously keeping the gameplay feeling fresh without the game itself being anachronistic.

With prequels that's always impossible to avoid. Deus Ex: Human Revolution is a good example.

thinking about it, multiplayer co-op with the cramped, stealth style of the arkham games would be alot of fun, what with the gadgets and lack of guns. on the other hand playing as the characters listed in a competitive environment doesn't sound too great... I'm conflicted.2013-04-24 15:50:00

http://thesilentchief.com/2013/04/27/kevin-conroy-wont-reprise-his-role-in-batman-arkham-origins-additional-details-surface/

• The Batman of Arkham City is Batman 5.0. He will punch out a guy without looking at him knowing exactly how many teeth he’s just fractured just from the feeling from his knuckles. Our Batman is version 0.9.

• Expect every boss encounter to be different

• We [ WB Games Montreal ] really believe that we’ve made the coolest version of Deathstroke [in any media]. He’s a wonderful counterpart to Batman.

• Making Batman scary again is important. Thugs are in absolute awe of Batman, debating whether or not he’s even human.

• Batman is impulsive, overconfident as he still has to encounter an opponent on par with his strength. He is clever but does not think of everything, for example when interrogating a thug he can be dominated by violence and stun the thug before getting the information he wanted. The major difficulties he will have to deal with in the game will have a strong impact on his psychology and will make him change to the more realist and stoic Batman from the previous games.

• Some of the 8 assassins will be side missions, and we will not be finished with them from the first encounter.

• Unlocking location for the Batwing is a whole side mission : an unknown hacker has jammed the radio system and Batman needs to restore it.

• Freeze boss fight from Arkham City is the main model for Origins boss fights.

According to the South African publication, NAG, Kevin Conroy will not be reprising his role as the Dark Knight. To fit this younger version, WB Games Montreal decided to go with a new voice actor. The name of the actor wasn’t revealed.

Freeze-esque fights?

I like it that they're setting this during Batman's early days of crime fighting. Those stories where he's still learning the ropes and struggling against the new class of criminals Gotham has to offer are among the best. When he was still considered an urban legend. Like in Batman: Year One.

No Kevin Conroy... I'm not sure how I feel about that. Other voice actors have done a great job, like Bruce Greenwood in Under the Red Hood, and Benjamin McKenzie in Year One. But I'm used to Conroy... It's his voice I associate with Batman by default.

Maybe they've hired another voice actor to reinforce the fact that he's a younger, less experienced Batman?

Yep... Well I bought the Deluxe edition that came with Nintendo Land, but I just bought Arkham City for the Wii U just to... Support Nintendo somehow I guess :/

Also, I was really looking forward to Rayman Leyends... But now I think I'll buy the Vita version of it. Seriously, poor Wii U.

There's always X to look forward to. But yeah, it's pretty bad so far. Anywho though, hopefully the addition of MP doesn't detract from the single player experience. I'm still not sure with both VAs gone and a new studio behind things, and the Black Mask isn't very convincing thus far... but ehh, hopefully it turns out okay.2013-07-31 20:17:00

Hopefully that's true... I heard the Wii U has some really really bad sales right now. The only thing I dislike from Nintendo is that they are just acting at times like devs like to act with CoD. They milk the very same franchises over and over again until they are drier than the driest peanut in RockSauron's domain As much as I love Mario, Zelda and stuff like the Super Smash Bros. series, I really hope they find some time to develop other stuff. I bought a Wii U for the single promise of Bayonetta 2, and I am also looking forward to X. Let's see if Nintendo can surprise us all.2013-07-31 23:53:00

I honestly don't know why you people want new game series from nintendo so much. i'm just fine with their main line up series. At least the system's main games are not lame FPSs like some other game systems we know atm... Plus nintendo do get some new game series too sometimes. But I love the line up nintendo has coming soon they showed off this year.

Can't say i'm interested to hear about online multiplayer on Batman. I'm almost never a multiplayer fan. When I buy this game I'll just play the storymode. *mew

Well, new trailer for Origins today:

http://www.youtube.com/watch?feature=player_embedded&v=3vJY9eHFdAU
I'll admit, so far I like what I hear from Batman's new voice actor, Roger Craig Smith; he actually sounds like a younger version of Kevin Conroy's Batman. Troy Baker also seems to be doing his best to follow in Mark Hamill's footsteps as the voice of the Joker.
Other things to note are that Alfred makes a physical appearance and Copperhead and Firefly are among the villains that will be appearing.

Why can't devs just go down the "Uncharted route" for multiplayer trophies, when the multiplayer has been tacked on to a single player game? 1 for coop, and 1 for competitive! Nobody wants to grind hours into a naff multiplayer mode just for the platinum.

As someone who has beaten both games multiple times they start to feel a bit old, thats mainly why I headed to something a bit more tasteful such as dark souls, but the idea of perma death actually makes me pretty happy to be honest.2013-09-29 23:28:00

Mode announced with no saves or continues

And yes, it's required for platinum

Bloody ridickarous!

I was never gonna plat it anyway due to those stupid multiplayer trophies.

12 hours 1 life no save.

So either Microsoft or Sony (maybe both) have provided an incentive to WB to kill some consoles and get people buying into the next gen.

'12 hourse, no life' is more like it!

I mean, to be fair you could probably beat the game in about 5hrs if you just did the story, but still!

Well, this will be fun for people like me :kz:

Also, it'll be only 50 bucks on Wii U due to no multiplayer there.

Personally, I think the multiplayer sounds interesting enough to be worth the extra 10 bucks. That, and I love trophies so the decision is on joys for me. That, and I don't have a wii u lol

But if you don't want to even try multiplayer, then get it on wii u

I dislike trophies personally and have no understanding why others like them. No really, I don't understand why.

And I won't bother with multiplayer. I'll probably just play the storymode up to couple times and be done with it like most games I play. *mew

I like trophies because they're fun. I imagine that's why most people like them.

Anyway, since you don't want multiplayer, just get the Wii U version. It'll be 10 bucks cheaper and you'll support 3rd parties on that console.
