Operation: Steamjunk Part 1

Archive: 10 posts

Fifteen years have passed since Detective Sack brought down the organization known as the Dark Three United. But it seems they have regrouped and added new leadership and members. They have since moved operations into the stratos on a space frigate called Steamjunk. The time has come for Detective Sack to investigate once again. Make use of a headlamp in the dark, paint gun, grapple hook, and the return of the Gravinator which allows for 2 seconds of zero gravity. Music is by RickRock_777 and O165_Vivaldi-NL.

I started working on this level a long time ago. It has been through many changes over the last few months. Finally decided on material choices, story, location, etc. Hope you will check it out. Feedback is always appreciated.

Great use of the creatinator as well as the overall gameplay. Your levels never disappoint, and this is one of my favorites. I hope to see a continuation of this DTU series. Well done2013-04-09 06:33:00

another great level shookie. the design, the gameplay the subject matter, everything all wrapped up in a pretty little package called Steamjunk. Man, I cannot wait for part deuce! I want to know what the DTU has been up to and how we thwart their dastardly plans. This level was really cool with the well balanced gameplay and excellent and varied use of powerups. Outstanding work.2013-04-09 13:56:00

Let me first say, if this isn't an Mm Pick, then I don't know what is. It was absolutely brilliant! The game mechanics were flawless, the lighting and music made for some great ambiance, the stage design was crisp and alluring, and the variety of obstacles was perfect. In my book, this level was nothing short of Outstanding. I give you a huge BRAVO! 2013-04-17 01:08:00

Operation. Steamjunk Part 1? Let's see where this goes and whether or not this saga has anything to continue with...

From the visual perspective this level is great. The most atmospheric moment was at the beginning with the lights out and you having to navigate with your creatinator's emitted light rays. It was a visually fantastic sequence and the best this level has to offer visual-wise. Not to say that the rest of this level is bad. It looks well detailed at almost every corner you might sniff around at and it's definitely how one would imagine a steam-operated spaceship (lolwut?) (at least I think it's a space-ship) to look. However, when you get right down to it, apart from the beginning there is nothing memorable or unique here, even though I have to give a shout out for the perfect lighting all the time. It felt like a steam-operated spaceship all the way through thanks to the visuals.

Audio here is fantastic also. I really liked the subtle and small sounds one can easily miss (at least during their first play through it). The music was absolutely great and all in all, audio-wise the level succeeded well. But it kind of has the same sort of flaw as the "Two Much of a Goo Thing" had. The visuals and audio are both great, but they don't work well together, which is a shame.

Gameplay here was innovative and fun, as well as having some really unique parts that were very well pulled off. There were a few parts that sort of unnecessarily slowed the level down, for me at least,(namely the jetpack-puzzle) and in all honesty it could have had more into it. It felt like a very normal platformer in a sci-fi setting at times, which is not necessarily a bad thing for this level, but considering how much potential there is here, it is kind of strange. However, there is a major plus to be earned here with quite possibly the most well thought platforming moment since the barrels in Spice & CO by poms: the low-gravity-creatinator was absolutely genius. It also used the idea to its full potential.

So this level succeeds in all the main areas, but I still have something to complain about... Come on, I'm a critic for plastic's sake, I need to note things I don't feel are good. The worst thing here is the execution of the story. While I have no problems with telling the story through the sackboy's point of view with his monologue, the story here doesn't work. By the end of the level we are left with nothing to go by. We don't find out anything about the plans of the Dark Three, which is an absolute shame because the setting is all open for having a multi-layered story set in it. It's a cartoon story and while there's nothing wrong with that, it isn't taken anywhere except the (SPOILERS BEGIN HERE) Dark Three not being where they are supposed to be. (SPOILERS END HERE)

While usually a bad story doesn't make the level bad, here it takes out of the experience and is the reason I can't give it as high score as I sort of wanted to. However, this level is a great fun and really atmospheric at parts and nails most of the things it needs to.

Visuals: 8/10
Audio: 8/10
Gameplay 7/10 (Would be 8/10 if the story wasn't there to distract from it)
Conclusion: 7,6/10 Great!

So that's my review of the level. If you felt like I was unfair at parts or want to oppose me, feel free to do so. However know that these are only my opinions and I really liked this level and I will be playing a possible sequel, even if the story left me cold this time.
