Are there any holidays you don't find real?

Archive: 17 posts

The point of the thread is to explain what holiday that you think is a fake holiday. Yes, it has to be an actual event people celebrate, but it doesn't have to be a common one. You can name rare ones that almost nobody hears about like Arbor Day.

Try to keep this thread on topic, civil, and less offensive. And I hope nobody says New Year's Eve or New Year's Day. How can a year begin and end without these days?

It's your turn to post.

Personally, I'm very suspicious as to the existence of Columbus Day.2013-04-07 01:05:00

Well, here are the holidays I find fake. I only named 3, and they're all in the spring.

Cinco de Mayo - this is the most widely celebrated of the three I listed. To be fair, Cinco de Mayo is NOT Mexican Independence Day. September 16th is the actual Mexican Independence Day. Cinco de Mayo is actually made up by the Americans. Well I never celebrated Cinco de Mayo, nor do I even plan it.

National Pot Day - also known as 420 or 4/20. Cinco de Mayo may be a debatable holiday based on whether it's real or not, but National Pot Day or National Weed Day is definitely a fake holiday. No more comments on this one.

Everybody Draw Mohammed Day - most fake holiday on this list. I highly recommend that you don't celebrate holidays that were made to offend others based on race or religion.

Uh, Groundhog Day? I know LBP has a costume for it and everything, but still...I just don't think a groundhog would make a very good weatherman, but with the way "Spring" has been acting recently, I think it's safe to say that the hog saw the largest shadow of its life this year.2013-04-07 16:14:00

I can't really express how glad I am for there being no atheists insulting religions here. I really, really am glad and happy for this.

Today, in Finland we celebrate Mikael Agricola's day, the man who invented Finnish language (as in text, not speech). However, considering how people know absolutely nothing about him instead of his day of death and name and what he has apparently accomplished. People don't even know if he's Finnish or Swedish, so I really find it rather strange.

Yeah, I agree with you. Different weather patterns occur as they don't correlate to the groundhog. He did see his shadow in 2010, and it was still cold. He didn't see his shadow in 2011, but it was still very cold in the winter. He did see his shadow in the warmest winter in America (2012), which was supposed to mean six more weeks, but winter ended early. And there was the worst drought and heat wave on record. In 2013, he didn't see his shadow, but due to the axial tilt, spring is no longer even a warm season. I think Groundhog's Day is no longer useful to celebrate. Time to look for a new one.

Nobody thinks the forecasts are real and to be honest, some of the official meteorologists don't do that well either. It's just a fun celebration for the folks in Punxsutawney, PA. A festival of music and food starring a beloved groundhog named Phil.

What is the harm?

Cinco de mayo was actually the celebration of Mexico's victory against the french in the city of Puebla, it is celebrated on Mexico, however yeah I dont see the point why it is celebrated on the us at all

I for one think easter bunny thing is kinda pointless, weird and just made as a marketing excuse

Oh, people think it's for determining the fate of the winter. I think changing it to a holiday to honor Punxsutawney Phil is fine.

@Ragnarok: Well, Americans actually celebrate it as Mexican Independence Day, which really it isn't. Do we Southerners celebrate the day the Ironclad battle ended every year? Not that I know of.

In other news, I saw an interesting list of what some other guy found to be "fake holidays". I'll post that link on the next post.

If it means getting off of work. I'll celebrate whatever fake holiday, even if it was made up on the spot

Yeah, but even within Mexico (and even Puebla, mind you) it's close to never celebrated. In a sense, you could say that Americans did "invent" it, as they seem to use it as an excuse to stuff their faces with Taco Bell and margaritas.

But, anywaiz... xD

As for me, I'm not too keen on the Festival of Colors. You know, the one that's almost like the Hindu festival Holi, except for the lack of Hindus and excessive amount of American teenagers all pumping their lungs full of cheap colored chalk.

It may be a marketing excuse now but thats not what it was made as. The easter bunny is a pre-christianity thing that has survived into modern times.
