How to create icons for your levels?

Archive: 18 posts

I want to make a custom sticker to set as an Icon for my level but the stickers I can make (with the photobooth tool or "take a picture" thing) are in 16:9 format and get "squished" when set as Icon, which looks bad.

Can I, and if yes, How do I make differently shaped pictures? (Eyetoy is no option).

Other tips for creating pretty icons are welcome!

Yeah it's ******* me off that I can't take a 4:3 picture. There's nothing you can do about it.

Actually there is one. You could create your logo already streched on purpose. Now when they resize your picture in your level icon it will appear at the right ratio.

I was wondering the same thing; haven't figured it out yet. It certainly looks like some people are doing it... maybe they are just good at faking it?2009-01-23 15:37:00

A little birdy told me that you take a picture then resize it yourself using the corner editor tool.
Not sure, never tried it myself, but it sure is worth a try

Resizing manually wouldn't make it less squished.

It's image cropping we would need.

O.0 i never thought of that, how would you do that though I never knew you could edit stickers, only objects. this involves more research. I will make a thread about it and post here with the thread link if I figure it out.

Cheers!

It's impossible to edit stickers/Photos...
Theres no research to be done on that matter, it's sad but its a fact.

Try this maybe?
Stick a sticker on a big block.. cut out the shape you want out of the block so you get the part of the sticker you want.
Now set up a camera so that the sticker is in the centre of the camera.
Run through the camera zone (don't stand in the way of the sticker)
then experiment with this new photo/sticker's size to make the circle in the middle of the block fit exactly.

Seems a lot of work for a small thing so it's probably wrong.

This won't solve his problem anyways.

What happen is that the photo zone is rectangular. Then when you take that rectangular photo into the square level icon, it gets "squished in" by the game therefore it loses it's ratio.

It's the game that is badly designed here, you can't do anything by the tools you have. The only thing you can do to solve this is to create your logo accounting it will get "squished". I'll give you guys a little example...

If you make some oval shape. When the oval is going to get squished, it will become a circle.
So if you want a circular shape into your level icon, make it an oval and take a picture of that oval so it will appear circular when squished. Get it?

It truly is the only way for as long as you can't change the photo taking tool's shape.

Typically the ratio is 16:9, right? And we're all upset that the picture is getting squished... well, what if we went about it in a different way? What if we made our object to be taken a picture of, and then put it up on its side and took the picture of it then? Essentially taking a 9:16 picture instead of 16:9...

Let me illustrate:

Would that provide anything more helpful? Not sure, I may have confused myself in the middle of the process. >.<

the picture when you try to make it a patch logo, will turn up as sideways so that will not work fyi. but i do not have any ideas except working with the ratio. :/

yeah, come to think of it, even if you were able to rotate the thing, it'd still be squished vertically : /2009-01-25 20:30:00

Arr, I thought i was missing something, but it seems to be the game then . It would look like you'd have to create the subject of the picture a bit stretched to get a good shot... That is fully inpractical but the only way until it's patched then.

Thanks for the comments.

Exactly. No matter how you take the picture it will get squished. Your only option is to create your image looking stretched horizontaly like I explained above.

The sticker switches I use in the digestion level I have are 16:9. Both are nowhere near perfect in terms of image capture or cropping or scaling, but they get the job done in what they need to do, both in terms of showing an object and having that object used as a sticker switch.

A sticker switch does not have to be a perfect fit of the sticker itself. You can make a outline of the object and it should work, just remember to keep the radius of the sticker switch big enough to cover the right area.

If you are capturing something in game, you can copy the object and fiddle with the lighting to make sure the stickers look good, like putting lighting on the object and darkening the background as examples.

Yeah, I know it's not ideal, but I only have the sticker switches as bonus unlocks to reward people that are replaying the level. One could say that I'm lazy in not trying to make them perfect representations of a circle, for example, but, well, it does the job for me and people have said they like how it works anyway.

Your talking about sticker SWITCHES, I made this topic about stickers for the ICON of your level and specifically the aspect ratio of it.2009-01-27 11:51:00
