aer0blue's Video Reviews [Queue now CLOSED] [Reviews Temporarily Paused]

Archive: 25 posts

The Queue is now CLOSED as of January 23, '09.

Data corruption has been pushing my creations back a bit, so while I wait for those fixes/patches, I thought I could do some video reviews. Here's how it'll work... A level's score will be based on the following factors:

Gameplay -/10 - How fun is the level? Is it frustrating? Is it too easy? Was it full of bugs and unnecessary things that weren't supposed to happen? Perhaps the most important aspect of all, really. Hitting that sweetspot between "too tough" and "too easy" is always good.

Creativity -/10 - Oftentimes we see some crazy ideas implemented by Creators, that just make you go, "wow, I would've never thought of that!" New gameplay mechanics, puzzles, and everything else that makes the author's work unique.

Presentation -/10 - Music. Sounds. Visuals. It all takes part here... From sound effects, to using more than just one music track (and implementing them correctly!), to how the level looks. If a level is "up in the sky", make the players actually feel like they're actually up there! Immerse them in your world. Magic Mouths help out plenty, as do Camera Zones. Because hey, who doesn't like a cool cutscene?

Replay Value -/5* - Would you play that level again? Hidden Prize bubbles you missed and you just must get? Even sections you couldn't finish because you didn't bring your buddy around--it all counts! Very important when taking mini-games into consideration, as they're all about beating that High Score.

Story -/5* - Let the player know what role they're taking--what's going on in the level. Why did they destroy that giant robot-dragon? Why are those cyclop-donuts chasing them?! Give them a purpose for their actions.

The Final Score will be determined by the average of all these factors.

*These don't always apply, as some levels just don't offer much Replay Value (or at all), and others simply don't have a Story to tell.

**DISCLAIMER**: Remember, this is just my personal view on these levels. If your level scores a 1/10 from me, it could still score a 10/10 with someone else reviewing it. I try to be as unbiased as I possibly can. I also try to suggest how the level could be improved in X or Y way. Feel free to message me about anything...except for "DUED! WHY U SCORE MY LVL A 1??!?!?!`!?!~? EVER1 PLAYZ RAMP DONT U KNO!!"

Thank you for understanding.

You MUST provide me your PSN ID and your level's name.

Since these are Video Reviews, I'll be uploading them onto YouTube. This of course has one limitation... If a level is too long, the review might go over YouTube's 10 Minute Limit. If so, I'll review the level as any other, but will leave the level unfinished on the video.

If a level is meant for co-op action, it might take a step back or two on the Queue as I need to find someone to play the level with. I don't want to grab two controllers... Now that's just no fun! Do let me know if the level is made for co-op beforehand.

Take into consideration that I have a job and college. I'll try my best to bring these Reviews as soon as possible. I'll update the thread title back and forth to notify when the Queue is OPEN or CLOSED. Please don't Request any Reviews while it's CLOSED. If you do, it will NOT be taken into consideration and will be ignored unless you ask again when it is OPEN.

Requests should be left here on this thread as it's easier to keep track of things. Questions should also be asked on the thread to minimize repetition of these.

If anyone's bored enough, has some free time and knows how to do 3D animation, please contact me! It would be nice to have a logo of the sorts come up as an intro. ;D

Only one level per user while on Queue. Please wait for your level to be reviewed before submitting another one.

Any level with a score of 7 or more is a good level. Anything less, and it could use some work. Not necessarily bad, but stuff can be fixed to make it a funner experience overall.

A level with a GREEN name means its Review process is currently in progress.

Hi,
A video review for one of my last published level would be really appreciated:
Level: The Bearer - Part I : Incipit
PSN: Takelow

Please, note that this level is an introductive part of my "The Bearer" series of levels. It is constructed as a movie trailer... When playing it, keep in mind: the creator just want to show me here subbtle touch of the atmosphere and design you can wait for the next levels (the Story really start in the Shire in Part II). It is a very visual experience.

Thank you a lot

Queing up! Great offer man!

PSN: Wyth
Level: Jack McSetback and the Spiky Stone of Doom

There is a small coop section but it hardly is the trouble to find a second player for that, you can nearly see the whole thing (except the place where you get your prize) with one player. I'd say just review it solo. You should be able to make it within 10 minutes.

I read your notes, and yes, SEMINAL GEMINI requires two players. Also, my PSN is the same as my name.2009-01-25 15:51:00

Great job there Aer0blue, you are really helping people out here and also advertising their levels at the same time. Your reviews are concise and clear, and you state why you give the levels a certain score.

I am looking forward to future reviews!

Thanks.

Also, next video will be coming during the week. I'm getting a tripod this weekend, because having the camera on top of some sheets isn't that stable. d:

Ah, I just remembered a suggestion for future productions...

If you have a microphone going to LBP, either a headset or an eyetoy, it will make the sackboy's mouth move as if it's talking while you are. You don't have to be online or playing with other people for this to happen.

If you do this while doinig your video reviews, it might make it look even more cool than it already is.

I actually had tried this...but my Sackperson's lips wouldn't move. Seems like you need to be online for it to work...or maybe something was wrong...

Woot! Hey man I really hope the SEMINAL GEMINI video review is doable. After watching the last review your going to have to find someone patient and skilled to do the review with. You can add me on PSN if you want, and we can get it done this week. PM me and let me know! 2009-01-31 22:12:00

Don't worry Nev, it's doable. I already bugged my sister into playing it with me.

And whoo-hoo, finally got that tripod. Can get to recording now at last!

"The Wizard of Odd" will be up next along with "SEMINAL GEMINI". SG has more priority though since it's only two-player. Gotta work on it as soon as a partner is available (my sister, most likely. xD)2009-02-06 17:38:00

Hey Aero, would you mind changing my level in the que from Jack McSetback & the Spiky Stone of Doom to Jack McSetback & the Buccaneers' Booty? The first one has had enough publicity I think and I'd like the feedback on the second one more .

Thanks and good luck on the reviewing

Definitely, my man. Reviews will start dropping in once I get Boss Rush out of the way. :]

Frustration...

I was working on wex's level next, but in the end had to scrap it due to technical reasons. Now I have to record it again. I might try a different approach this time around, though. Perhaps record the gameplay first, then do a voice-over... What do you guys think? If it works out good, I'll keep following this approach instead.

This sounds good to me. I might be easier as you don't have to think about what to say as your trying to concentrate on getting through the level.

I hope it's not my level thats getting you frustrated

There's a thing on youtube called "Let's plays" It's a bunch of guys playing trough games that are requested, and they usually do the narration as they play. There is one though that added narration afterwards, like you're thinking about right now, and nobody could tell the difference.

Jsst one tip: Please DON'T try to express feelings like being scared, or being surprised, since it is most likely going to be very, very fake. Like in those sad real-life series... :S Anyway, i'll guess you'll have to try it out yourself, and see what you find the easiest.
