What is your first LBP Memory, Tom?

My first LBP memory? Well, If i'm being honest it probably wasn't that good. I had heard quite a bit of hype about the game and thought i'd take the plunge and buy it. I remember playing through the Gardens theme and thinking what the hell is this? I'm not 6 years old! Luckily for me i persisted and the only way was up from there.

What was it that first hooked you about LBP?

Create mode, pure and simple. I'd always loved games that gave you the chance to express yourself and had an element of create to them. As soon as I started to find out what create was all about with LBP I was hooked and never looked back.

Tell us about the first level you ever made?

It was horrible, truly terrible, but of course i didn't know that at the time. I can't really remember what it was called now, something like Super Epic MGS Maze Escape (I know, I know...) . I think it consisted of a couple of moving platforms, a short maze, then you had to run through a few doors. I remember thinking at the time that this was it, surely a 5 star level in anyone's eyes. Imagine my shock when 2 stars reviews came in. lol. I had so much to learn.

How have you improved as a creator since then?

In so many ways. Over the last year especially I seem to have developed my own style in silhouette work. It's quite nice to have stumbled upon an area of the game that i'm fairly good at.

What is your best moment in LBP?

This is an easy one for me to answer. Without a doubt it was finally publishing the Age of Light and earning my first spotlight from it. I hadn't published anything of note in over a year. When LBP2 first came out I had so many ideas ready to go. I thought I could publish level after level. Well, it didn't exactly work out like that. I built loads but couldn't get anything to a point where it was ready to publish so, finally getting that level finished and receiving all the positive feedback was a real thrill, only topped by the morning I woke up and saw that it had been spotlighted. I think I had a silly grin on my face all day. I owe the Spot Light crew a lot because that really spurred me on.

If you could change one thing about LBP, what would it be?

I don't know? Maybe a little less drama in the community sometimes? I'll just leave it at that.

What do you consider to be your strengths and weaknesses as a creator?

Strengths - I guess my strengths would be visuals, mainly in silhouette, and coming up with level ideas.
Weaknesses - definitely Logic / Gameplay and focus. I sometimes have too many ideas. I find it hard to stick to just one and see it through to completion. Last time I counted I think I probably have about 8 levels started.

If you could improve one aspect of your creating, what would it be?

If I could improve one aspect of my creating it would definitely be gameplay, It's something i really struggle with. I play some levels and sit there afterwards in awe at what i've just seen. I'd love to be able to create complex obstacles or puzzles. Some of the stuff that Tripple-sss makes for instance are mind blowing, I don't know how he does it? His levels always leave me with 'Level Envy'.

I'm curious to know what your influences and inspirations are. Is there anything that touches your soul in a profound way?

I get inspiration from everywhere, be it a cool piece of artwork or, and this will sound really corny, something like a beautiful sunset. It's cool to take a second and watch how the light changes over a landscape as the sun goes down. you can see the theme of light in a lot of my work.

I do a lot of driving for my job and this gives me plenty of time to think up level ideas. This has proved to be both a blessing and a curse at times.

I am also a big Pink Floyd fan and find their music very inspiring.

What does the Ghost Creators mean to you?

The Ghost Creators means a lot to me. It was an honor to have been asked by Sabre to join. The main aim is to help get it's members over with the community. We're all there to help each other out, whether it's with ideas and feedback, or jumping online to support a new level published by one of our creators. it's a tight group, and the community aspect of it appeals to me.

We've had a lot of fresh talent come in over the last few weeks so expect big things in the future.

Can you tell us about some of your levels?

BLACK44 - http://lbp.me/v/de0wzr

BLACK44 is an art gallery. It started off as just a quick side project, something different to build for a while in between other things, but turned into a serious anti war film. It's probably the project i'm most proud of. It takes the form of a film, told through a series of snap shots. I was looking for a powerful way to end it and came up with the idea of using old black and white images of soldiers and refugees looking forlorn directly into camera. The title comes from an old Pink Floyd lyric "It was just before dawn, One miserable morning in Black 44" (When the tigers broke free - Pink Floyd)

The feedback I've received from this project has been very touching, and those words mean a lot to me.

Alley_Cat_8633 - Most beautiful, emotional, and meaningful creation on LBP. Just so amazing. R.I.P.

RtooDee2 - Beautiful and haunting, excellent detailed design, well edited and well fitted music. Its another artform presented on LBP and kudos to you for bringing it to us. Great work. Gone but never forgotten.

A Journey Through Silhouette - The Age Of Light http://lbp.me/v/bnfx0j

This was the first level of any substance that I published. For a long time I had wanted to try my hand at doing a proper silhouette level. The original idea was to have a series of different themed levels (Fantasy / Japanese / City roof top) but as i was building it, it evolved into something different. I like how a level evolves over time, from the original idea to the end result. Often you go in different and unforeseen ways during the creating process. With this level I had tried to combine old school platforming gameplay with the best visuals I could come up with at the time. I'm not sure I quite achieved that goal, but that was the plan.

O165_Vivaldi-NL - Ok let me start with this. This is the reason i make music here. This level absolutely blows me away. Its so beautiful and relaxing. The visuals are outstanding and the gameplay was great. I loved every piece of it. 10/10 Really deserves more plays.

tevlon1 - Incredible! What a beautiful piece of work. I loved the awesome atmosphere and the style you used. Such a calming and relaxing level just has to be played. Great work!

A Journey Through Silhouette 2 - Glow (1P) http://lbp.me/v/f53ds3

For the sequel I wanted to raise the bar on the first. it has improved visuals and gameplay, especially in the second stage. I added a couple of features to the bot and more of a cinematic into to the start. If Age of Light had a Summer feel to it then Glow would be represented by Autumn. The light is fading, the days are getting shorter.

OmieR - Not only that this level has one of the best visuals what I have seen for a while, its also have very unique gameplay, collectibles giving you more to explore this wonderful land. This is truly amazing work!

Unexpecter - Incredible as I expected!!! Totally mindblowing audio-visual play with mind! A masterpiece!!!

Shimmer - http://lbp.me/v/hd4hnd

I had been inspired by a few levels and wanted to try something a bit different with Shimmer. The emphasis was still on visuals and a relaxing atmosphere, rather than complex gameplay. there was quite a bit that i had built that never made it into the level so, maybe there will be a sequel down the line?

DrunkenFist_Lee - A switch from your usual style.. Love it! Great low-stress, meditative gameplay meshes perfectly with your brilliantly restrained visual style. DrunkenFist approved!

dolphins-R-lame - Honestly one of the most relaxing levels i have ever played! The atmosphere is fantastic and i love the placements of the prize bubbles! Good job!

Who are some of the Creators you admire?

This is a tricky one because I admire so many creators out there for different reasons. I could easily list 20 or 30 but, that may get a bit boring so I'll keep it short.

RtooDee2 - http://lbp.me/u/RtooDee2

I'll start with my good friend R2. I love the kind of levels he creates. They are always rich in new and original gameplay mechanics. It's an area that I really struggle with. I'll sit there trying to think up gameplay ideas and, after a few hours of creating I'll have a moving platform to show for my efforts. Where as R2 will have come up with half a level on the fly in the same time. Darn him and his talent!

ladylyn1 - http://lbp.me/u/ladylyn1

I've always been a massive fan of Ladylyn1. One of LBP's big guns. I don't think there is anything he can't do. Every level he makes looks so polished.

O165_Vivaldi-NL - http://lbp.me/u/O165_Vivaldi-NL

I need to put a music creator in, and it's hard to pick just one. But if I had to, I'd go with Vivaldi. His music really seems to compliment some of the levels I've made. I used one of his tracks in my first Journey Through Silhouette level. It fit perfectly. It was a real thrill when he played it and left a glowing review

S8N-M - http://lbp.me/u/S8N-M

S8N-M has helped me out loads with his unique brand of honest, detailed feedback. I think honest feedback is vital to any creator. You need someone you can trust to tell you if something works or not. He's always supported me and I owe him a lot.

Jester946 - http://lbp.me/u/jester946

You won't find a harder working guy in LBP. Bio gives so much back to the community. I would love to know how many levels he's actually played in his time? I'm sure it's a scary amount. For a number of reasons Bio has earn't my respect many times over.

What are some of the Levels you admire?

The Long Lost Lights of Spectrum Caverns by tevlon1
(http://lbp.me/v/hs0eyq)

This blew me away when I first saw it. I was a big fan of the first level and was curious to see if Tevlon could top it. It's safe to say that he managed it in every way. Easily one of the best looking levels around. Everything is so polished. Visuals / Music / Gameplay and atmosphere are all top notch! A massive amount of level envy with this one.

At World's End by DrunkenFist_Lee
(http://lbp.me/v/5dpvw5)

This level is the bench mark that all silhouette levels must be measured against. I'm still trying to make something as good as this and, I have a feeling that I'll be trying for a long time to come. The first time I played it was a real 'jaw hitting the floor' moment, especially the ending. I was left thinking "How the hell did he do that?"

Flint (Puzzle Platform) by SasukeUchica
(http://lbp.me/v/hvn5-p)

Flint has a simple yet powerful art style and some devious puzzles to solve. Definitely a favourite of mine.

Enchanting Illusion by OmieR
(http://lbp.me/v/f8c9n7)

Enchanting Illusions is a unique level. I really admire OmieR as a creator. He seems to focus on atmosphere while making his levels and this has it in spades! Not every level has be fast passed. Sometimes I just want to forget about things and get some escapism, to let a creator transport me to a different world. OmieR is great for this. Enchanting Illusions manages to be creepy and awkward yet, beautiful at the same time.

SHADOWS OF SALEM (Rise of the Witches) Part.1 by Pirmaut
(http://lbp.me/v/c5ze--)

I was lucky enough to have gotten a sneak peek of this before it was published. Pirmauts silhouette work was so detailed. I remember thinking at the time that I needed to up my game to get mine to the same level. It was exactly the push i needed.

Do you have any future plans and projects, Tom?

Yeah, I have a load of projects that I've started. Hopefully I'll be able to finish some of them soon.

Sol - This will be my next artwork gallery and will feature a piece of music that Hugh-es has done for me. I've come up with just short of 20 pieces so far, I guess i'm about half way through.

http://i0.lbp.me/img/ft/970f86c76a6e1517dc4c1f71c179d511bee8e311.jpg

http://i7.lbp.me/img/ft/2a7813a7e03a7b89dadc4aea8cc4d23badadd93f.jpg

A Journey Through Silhouette 3 - I'd like to publish the 3rd and final part to the series this year. It might take the form of a film. I have plenty of ideas. expect something a bit darker...

http://ib.lbp.me/img/ft/63bb666556f68d5040a8576a1644e86dad70c711.jpg

http://ia.lbp.me/img/ft/0daf4a8ce099f13754cef36944ad4aa087cae759.jpg

Lunar Industries - Something different for me. A dark and creepy level set on an abandoned space mine. I am honored to have some guy called "Rick" agree to do the musical score for this level. hopefully we can come up with something memorable.

http://i7.lbp.me/img/ft/2b7f74a47a36b8f05f1cc04cb0ef9b9b2fd49f1c.jpg

Future Shocks - This will be a futuristic / sci fi silhouette level for the vita and will feature these guys.

http://i3.api.vita.lbp.me/img/ft/13331e91226905fb8e5030eb5f7e040a94a9ba54.jpg

Do you own a copy of LBPV?

Yeah I do, I've only published one level on there to date, Nocturnal (http://vita.lbp.me/v/9kkx6). It seemed to have been received very positively. In fact It did far better than I ever could have hoped for and ended up with a team pick. maybe i should stop while i'm ahead, one for one. lol.

Out of all the new tools that LBPV has to offer, what is it that most excites you?

There are a few new tools that make life so much easier. The new text tool for instance. no longer do you have to spend loads of time messing about with fonts like with LBP2. It's so much quicker. Little things like that are a welcome innovation. I hope in time that it will find it's way over to LBP2.

Do you plan on getting LBPK?

No , it's not for me, I don't have the time for a another LBP game. Plus I think my wife might actually leave me if I bring a third one home! lol

And to round out this interview, please give us 3 tags which describe you as a creator?

-Visuals
-Silhouette
-Day Dreamer

Thank you for the insightful details, Tom. It has been an honor and a pleasure to publish this interview. How about another TAG from an admirer...BRILLIANT.

Sorry to come to this a bit late - been a busy weekend.

Anyway, I've always loved Tom's silhouette levels. This kind of level has become more popular recently but few creators have managed to perfect it to the standard of his levels.

I also have a huge respect for everything Tom does for the LBP community - not just Ghost Creators but Hidden Moon and all the Twitter activity, constantly trying to get exposure for other creators. Not forgetting his membership of the Contest Crew either

I'm so pleased you have lots of new projects on the go. I can't wait for Journey Through Silhouette 3!

Thanks for the interview, Rick. Awesome read and as Bio said, keep them coming!

@ Tom...thanks for the kudos my friend. But you did all the work.

@ Lass...thank you also, and I agree with your comments. Tom is crazy brilliant with his silhouette masterpieces. Black 44 belongs in a Museum on display for the eyes of the world to see.

Great interview. Each time I play Notorious' level, my jaws were dropped. His silhouette style always amazes me, and he came up with some very fun gameplay. He also did a great job with the interviews with Ghost Creator members like me. Looking forward to his future LBP2 and LBPV levels. 2013-03-18 19:41:00

Alas, the one interview I've long awaited for and finally it's here. You've brought to this community something most if not all strive to gain. And that is a character you you seem to display from the get go, "Respect". I have nothing but the utmost respect for not only an incredibly talented creator, but also a special individual I deeply consider a great friend. I'm extremely grateful for Sabre creating such a group that are more than creators whom are talented in their respective ways, but to be given a great opportunity to connect with someone such as you, Notorious187.

I did have one question that maybe you and the rest of the spotlight team can answer. And that is, how do you guys/gals find the time to juggle everyday responsibilities with the demand this awesome site requires of you. I can barely find the time to play, let alone create with a full time job and family responsibilities. All your hard work will never go unnoticed by the likes of me. I greatly appreciate everything this site has done and continue doing to bring us incredible levels.

I'm always looking forward to your newest and latest levels my friend. A true artist who knows no limitation to being the best at what he does. For those reading this interview that never knew or played any of Notorious's levels, please try one of them out and you"ll be forever thankful you did.

Now where is that "Rick" interview I've been equally looking forward to and awaiting. Don't make me wait too long either
