Lamb & Wolf (a stealth adventure)

Archive: 37 posts

http://lbp.me/v/jhr7mv

First off, let's get one thing straight. This is NOT a typical Ungreth level. It is a family friendly level. There are no dark, creepy, horrible things here that will give your children nightmares. Ok? Good. (I'm a creator, not a charicature).

Nor is it a typical LBP level...

Lamb & Wolf is what I call a "stealth adventure". You must guide three little lambs from the safety of the barn, to the grassy meadow where the long grass grows (little lambs love that kind of thing), while avoiding the hungry wolves who prowl the countryside.

http://i3.lbp.me/img/ft/573beaee581604eaa551c727d97478a0d56106df.jpg

There's no platform jumping, hazard dodging, or any of the usual LBP mechanics here. I have taken all the traditional elements of classic stealth games, including sneaking, hiding, moving silently, creating distractions and using disguises, and applied them to LBP. In this game you don't die...you get "spotted".

There's also a logic system in place that will clock up the time it takes you to complete the level, and award you a score based on your speed. Finding bonus golden eggs will boost your final score too.

http://i5.lbp.me/img/ft/565201bbe7c680b61d203b1fe0d215598d419570.jpg

If you enjoy the level's music tracks (made by me too), I've given 'em all away as a prize at the end

Enjoy y'all

Ha, loved this. It was so refreshing to play something so different from the usual LBP level. You did a fantastic job ringing the changes with all the different types of stealth gameplay and it was cool that it almost felt like a puzzle at times, having to work out how to get past each successive wolf. Great not to have too much hand holding with that btw.

It looked wonderful and was cute without being too sugary, although that bunny at the beginning cracked me up. Actually it was probably the sense of tongue in cheek throughout which made the cuteness work.

Anyway, it was a brilliant level: funny and clever and charming. I will definitely replay to improve my score. It's great to see you creating again.

I was going to make some remark about Shropshire since the place is pretty much synonymous with sheep but then they weren't really that kind of sheep...

Got to playing it, and all I can say is wow.

Ok, I lied, there's more.

The enviorments looked great. They were bright and detailed, and were accompanied by nice music.

The stealth gameplay worked well, and it was nicely varied. I particualrly liked how consistent the other lambs were. Normally I would expect them to frequently get stuck or separated, but for the most part, they stuck to my character as needed.

This was a lot of fun to play and I highly recommend it to others.

I was going to make some remark about Shropshire since the place is pretty much synonymous with sheep but then they weren't really that kind of sheep...

I was first struck with the idea for the level when gazing across the Shropshire countryside from a window at work one morning. Sadly though, Shropshire has little going for it except for pretty landscapes and hoardes of sheep...unless of course you absolutely love comparing tractors with your friends and you consider watching drunken, semi-literate yokels bottling each other at the YFC disco on a Friday night to be the highlight of your week's entertainment.

Great level, really enjoyed it. Um the only thing that took me out of it, was the rock throwing, my first initial reaction was to use the other stick to aim, um and the part after the first rock throw where there is a bird, I thought that I was meant to throw a rock at the bird.

I think that this was because you walk past the bees to throw the rock, so where you are positioned is between the the two puzzles, so you are still thinking 'throw a rock' but this is such a minor thing I actually feel a bit sheepish mentioning it.

That's right... sheepish.

LMAO - no, tractors and Young Farmers were never my thing! I remember you posted this on my VM board way back in 2009

And just so this post is not totally off topic (though of course we are really discussing the inspiration for the rural idyll depicted in your level *cough*) I agree with Mr F that having the aiming for the shooting on the left analogue stick did take a little getting used to but then I'm fairly button dyslexic anyway...

As it is F4F I will play it and leave a review on it. No need to worry, I won't ask you to review anything of mine, it's just because I'd like to see the entire F4F system expanded, as it isn't so very popular nowadays, for some odd reason.

Anyway, enough of that. I can only judge this based on what I've seen in the pictures so far and I have to say that I have never been a big fan of the entire 3D glitching-thing. However, I try not to let that take away from the level's atmosphere from me.

Edit: Review

I play a lot of levels online. I really do. While I don't rate them all, even in my mind, I can tell that they often go around the average quality middlepoint. I occasionally come here to see if there's something interesting to play. While usually the levels here are good, there are some gems hidden in the midst of them. What we have here, is one of those gems.

The first thing I noticed here is that the controls were very easy to learn. They weren't overcomplicated with a bazillion different combos, but just... three sheep you walk through the levels. There's something so charming about those creatures... The gameplay here was excellent as well. It took me a few tries to get through some of the harder puzzles, but when they click it's really satisfying. The time I finished the level, I really wasn't happy with it. I found it too short. However, the more I thought of it, the more I loved it.

While the problem with most levels such as this is that the controls you learn are not needed except a couple of times, here I never felt that the level missed anything. I could've kept playing it for an hour, if it was that long. The entire setting is so charming, yet the wolves really feel and seem threatening, without being brutal or scary in any way. The level was rather comedic too. I had a few good laughs with it. I also liked the addition of hidden eggs and timer, which dedicated the score. However, it is not as good on the second go, as no levels such as this are.

This level also nailed the music and sound area. The musics are calm, yet mood-creating and powerful and the sound effects... Oh my, the sound effects were just great. From the alert noises to the smallest of thumps, they were great overall in this level. However, in the end of the day there really was nothing memorable there. The tracks were great as they played, but they were not 'amazing' anyhow.

Visuals... Them visuals. I don't like the 3D glitch. I really don't. It really doesn't work here either. Sure, it's pretty to have unique background and such, but I am not a fan of glitching overall in this game. However, it works here on some degree: this level would not work with any background there is, so it's kind of necessary here. As for the rest... The wolves and the sheep looked awesome, the scenery was awesome and lighting was perfect at parts. However, the entire screen was a bit blurry at times, because of the use of 3D-glitch here.

In conclusion, this level is not only great, but it's awesome. The ending scene was a cherry on top for this level, which nails almost everything and is among those rare levels in history which I have ever given the following points in gameplay...

Gameplay: 10/10
Visuals: 8/10
Music/Sound: 9/10
Conclusion: 9/10

This level is excellent and the best this month, if not this year, by far. If you are reading this and having any doubts about playing this level, do it. Just do it. It's worth it. I can't really praise this level enough. It's an absolute delight and should not be missed.

If you have any gripes about something I said or think that I was unfair at parts, please leave a comment and I'll read it.

-FreeAim

PS: I found three golden eggs. At the tent where one of them was was a level-bug, which for some reason caused the sheep following the main sheep stop and not follow, even if they were told to. It was fixed by being detected by a wolf, but I just found it worth mentioning.

I really wish I could have made the level longer, but right from the start I made a decision to sacrifice quantity for quality and went all out on presenting rich, thermo-decadent visuals and attention to detail. There are actually about 3 full thermos packed into what looks like only half a thermo bar in create mode, with an emit/destroy logic handling the pressure of the excessive resourcing. I think if I had overloaded the therm any more then the level would have suffered serious lag and performance issues.

The 3D glitch....well I wouldn't and couldn't have done the level any other way. While "stealth-puzzler" was the phrase I had in mind when developing the gameplay, "panoramic vista" was the phrase that guided my visual approach. The idea for the level first struck me as I looked out of the window one morning and I was taken by the beauty of a great expanse of fields and rolling hills, shrouded in the low-lying dawn mist, and all I could hear was the sound of sheep....hundreds of them, bleating in chorus. I wanted to try and capture some of that quaint pastoral beauty in LBP. The blurriness was a deliberate artistic choice. If I had tried to depict the scene on paper then I would have most likely used pastels or watercolours, so I deliberately adopted a watery, pastelly palette for the level's visual style. This is also a direct contrast to the dark and grimy look of my other levels. I really wanted to break my own mould this time and not conform to the stereotype of the "dark and creepy" creator, an alterego which I have admittedly cultivated myself over the years, so it was important to me that my stylistic shift was reflected not only in it's themes and atmosphere, but also it's aesthetic.

That said, there IS a dark subtext to the level, and those who know me will probably recognise the deeper significance of the final scene, but as far as the kiddies at home can percieve, the level is nothing more than what it says on the tin...just three cute lambs out on a big adventure

Anyway, thank you for the detailed review. Constructive criticism is the best feedback one can get, because empty, sycophantically fawning praise is just as unhelpful as those comments stating "this level sux", so giving me your insight on the good and the bad is much appreciated.

Let me know if you want feedback on your own creations any time

Everything about this level was amazing, but I have to say this was the most beautiful thing I"ve ever played. I Especially loved the design of 3D environments. There are just no words to describe how great they looked! The gameplay= Wonderful , The story= Heart warming, The Art= Captivating. If we could hand out stars you would earn a perfect 5/5 from me. There is absolutely no way you won't earn an MM pick.

You should be very proud of your hard work! Can't wait for more!

i watched this grow from a mini-game to where it is now, almost a full game
it's an experience to play it, controls are easy, even i can do it
the lambs are very cute, u just wanna help them get to the meadow
along the way u come across some wolves, sometimes u really need to solve the puzzle how to pass them.
while ur busy doing that, u can enjoy the beautiful scenery and awesome music.

So Easter comes and a whole load of easter egg/ farm themed levels appear on Mm picks. Mine not one of 'em. Ungreth sad.

Was this level just not good enough for the current Mm pick standard or was I right and StevenI really did take a dislike to me? Hmm, maybe getting paranoid now, but he DID follow me on Twitter before and now he doesn't....and...dang it...

I'm never gonna get a pink ribbon again am I?

Ahhh don't you just love it when you're in the middle of a big long post and your PC decides to freeze?

I'll have to summarise:

- Great level, very unique gameplay. Loved it!
- The acting on the sackbots was brilliantly done, made the level feel more "alive", if you will.
- Liked the hiding in the hay bit - an MGS reference? Certainly felt like it.
- Music fit well.
- You managed to keep the gameplay varied enough throughout, and the length of the level was spot on IMO.
- Deserves more recognition!

Space Assassins III: Wolf in Sheep's Clothing?
I was kinda expecting the sheep to be armed with garrotes and poisoned fangs...

Fantastic visuals and wel executed sneak gameplay. Loved it.

Btw. Still have to make it past that snoring wolf (my wife had dinner on the table, and I kept getting spotted, so a quick yay & heart, and I'll be back)...

Thanks. As always, it's an honour to have been featured. LBPC spotlight = happy Ungreth...that's a mathematical equation.

Normally an Mm pick would be very bad news for me because I've always specialized in niche levels that aren't targeted at the wider community, but Lamb & Wolf is my first truly family friendly level, accessible for all players, so a little mainstream exposure wouldn't have gone amiss this time around. However StevenI did play the level but didn't finish it or rate it, so clearly he wasn't impressed with it anyways. I guess I better try harder and pull something mind-blowingly phenomenal out of the bag next time if I ever want a pretty pink ribbon again.

Or maybe I'll just pull on the black hood and go back to creepin' the bejeezus out of everyone again

I loved the level and I’ve found some old blue ribbons in the trash that I’ve since painted pink and you can have one! I found that if you tape one of these ribbons it to the television and squint just right, you can cover your level badge with it! Instant MM Pick! Congratulations on the well-deserved Spotlight.

Just to add, if anybody is wondering where my other levels are, they are locked down on the dark side of my moon. I felt that since Lamb and Wolf might appeal to a younger demographic than my usual stuff, and I didn't want mums griefing me for exposing their precious ones to "mature" content, it would be wise to make these levels off-limits, for now at least.

If anybody here wants access to my darker materials, just message me...and I'll think about it

I think I was stuck between "you never fail to amaze me" and "you never disappoint" and managed to come up with wording which was entirely not what I was trying to say. Funny thing is, this represents pretty well my everyday speaking prowess.....

Finally played this the other day, as everyone said it's a solid level. I love your unique visual style and you have a serious knack for puzzles that are challenging without being brutal, something very few creators achieve. Great level from a technical point of view; controlling 3 sackbots and not getting them stuck in places is really impressive! Personally I wasn't a fan of the adjustable camera; it didn't add that much to the experience and I feel fixed cameras would make it easier to see each stage I sometimes got spotted because I couldn't see some wolves until it was too late). Maybe some of the stages were too big for one camera in which case it's understandable. I also felt the opening cutscene was rushed (probably to avoid players moaning about good story-telling as usual) and the plot was nothing special* (clearly the focus was the gameplay which is no bad thing). Also; what happens when the lambs are done playing? Do they have to go all the way back through that gauntlet? Will the parents miss/follow them? Nothing to criticise apart from those really nitpick-y details; awesome level!

* - apart from the mind-blowing plot twist at the end

(I have nothing released at the moment, I might call the F4F in over the summer if you're available - no pressure )

Thanks for playing and leaving feedback. Yeah, the intro was deliberately kept short as I'm aware that most LBP players don't want to sit through long cut scenes before they can get their teeth into the meat and bones of a level. Many will even quit if an intro lasts more than 30 seconds. So...I focused simply on setting the tone with the intro, then allowing the story to be told through the gameplay.

The adjustable cam was really just an optional extra, allowing players to gain a broader perspective on what lies ahead in the environment and to plan their stealth approach accordingly, but there is no particular requirement to use this function at any point in the gameplay. Unless you do use it the camera angles are fixed, but if (like you say) you sometimes got spotted before certain wolves came into view, that would have been a good time to take advantage of the adjustable cam function.

I guess the question of how the lambs get home after their play time in the meadow is best left to the players imagination. Let's face it...nobody ever asks what the little boy down the lane did with the wool. However, the final scene should indicate that they do return home safely to the barn. As for the uninvited guest, I did my best to try and convey the fact that he is just as shocked as the sheep are when he get's caught out. I thought it would be funny to have the whole YOU GOT SPOTTED! concept turned around on it's head, and I hope that scene came across as intended.

Anyway....any time you need the F4F returned just let me know
