Your opinion on long levels/games

Archive: 13 posts

I'm curious as to how people feel about long levels. Do you tend to back out of a level if its too long and come back later? What about level links? If there is a series of levels do you usually play through them all or do you give up after playing the first few. I'm really curious since I'm working on a new level, but I haven't fully decided on how huge I want it to be, so I wanted to hear a few opinions. I'm sure there are lots of factors to this, so its ok to be descriptive. A long level can be 10+, 20+, or 30+ minutes. I'm sure its different for everyone.2013-03-12 03:07:00

When the level gets to around 15 minutes I tend to back out. But if the level is very fun and engaging I would finish the whole thing regardless. Personally I don't like really complicated story's so if there is one of those (which there tends to be in long levels) I would probably back out within 5 mins. If you want to check out a long level that kept my attention it is called the mud cave or something (something with mud in the title it's an MM pick) that was a good level. :star:2013-03-12 03:34:00

Ah I've played that one. So basically you're fine with it if you're able to continue where you left off (level links), and if theres not a really complicated story. Good to know, thats basically what I plan on doing.2013-03-12 04:46:00

If there is a series of levels, more often than not I'll stop playing after one or two and queue the next one to play at a later date. Depends on how long they are and how many of them there are. I won't quit a level on the basis that it's too long.
What you do have to bear in mind is that a lot of gamers are young so won't have the patience for longer levels.

I have a similar dilemma. I've been working on my level for the best part of a year. It is a long level, playing through it from start to scratch could take 45mins - 1hr.
How I've done it is by given the player a choice of play modes - Standard Mode and Endurance Mode. Standard Mode gives the player less points, but allows them to save their progress and come back at a later date to resume. Endurance Mode doesn't allow you to save your progress, you have to play from start to finish, but you could potentially (preuming the player isn't completely hopeless ) gain a lot more points and get some decent prizes.

My level is split up into 30 stages, so it's easy for me to do something like this.

There was this level - http://lbp.me/v/7-d7q3

Quite a long level, split into parts. You can see how well it has done, so the length of the level shouldn't put people off playing.

If the level is fun, has a great story or really good puzzles to figure out, I would play from start to finish. However, I don't have a short attention span like most of the LBP community(being kids). So if you plan on appealing to the masses, it would benefit you to keep it short versus long. If you just want your level to be what it is supposed to be(your vision), then let nothing stop you - make it as long as it has to be. I believe in making levels for yourself first and then after you get feedback, you can edit it(if you like) to appeal to more players. LBP creation is all about expressing yourself the way you want - so don't sell yourself SHORT(pun intended).
Cheers

Well if it's going to be a long level then it needs to be fun. It's no fun watching this long movie of a sackbot dancing and doing nothing else is it. Unless it's a serious level... I would try and keep the long levels funny.

Babe, I am long levels.
My latest, longest, and greatest level, SackDroid - Part 1: A Train Crash, is so long that so far none of the Spotlight Crew have been able to finish it yet. It can range from 45 minutes to two hours depending on the player. It's also filled with puzzles, cutscenes, and is pretty difficult. I guess I can just sympathise with long levels, so I usually play them all to the end.

I love to watch long movies in LBP or long levels with an entertaining story, great music or Sackbot action in there. I dislike very long and hard platforming level where I have to survive jumps over jumps for hours or play the whole time! 2013-03-15 18:33:00

I can't do it. I'm so prone to quitting if it's just boring platforming for twenty minutes straight, it's just so dull.

It doesn't even have to have a story, it could just be really, really cool, and I would finish it. If it's something fun and creative, I'll gladly finish it. I leave right off the bat if the level has three or more lengthy and erratic cutscenes that show that a door opened or something, I'll leave if I just give up trying to pass a really difficult bit, I'll leave if I'm not doing more than jumping, running, and hitting switches, and I'll leave if I'm forced to sit through a tutorial as if it were an AP Literature lecture.

I don't mind long levels if they are really well done or made long just from being quite challenging. That being said I love a great challenge, but if it takes 20 minutes to pass seemingly the width of one segment (screen full), then I feel a bit uninspired. lol2013-03-15 19:33:00

Thanks for the informative responses everyone.

So much truth in this statement. I understand some levels may need to teach you how to play but I hate tutorials that assume I have the IQ of a 3 year old. There are much better ways to tell the player how to play... like making them actually play the level for example.

If there's no repetition/the level is so entertaining that a bit of repetition is fine, then make it giant.2013-03-16 11:42:00
