it looks stunning and you can see even from the screenshots the amount of effort that's gone into it, and it does cause a hell of a lot of lag sadly. i was playing with 2 players. Just wish there were more challenges rather than relying on it's looks to hold it up.2013-03-12 14:37:00

Thank you so much for that review and constructive criticism FreeAim. It has helped me a lot about creating certain things. In the future I'll think about these things and try to incorporate them in my levels. Much appreciated

I will play this and review this. If you want to get more feedback on how to improve as a creator, look for people who do F4F. It really is helpful, yet it seems to have lost a bit of its popularity lately.

Also, if the review I'll make looks negative, do know that in my best interests I want to see creators here evolve and become better, so I WILL concentrate on the bad stuff, without leaving out some positive things, of course.

EDIT:

This is my review of "Cavern Mayhem" by OMGYOUWOULD.

I want to start this review by telling you that you will likely not enjoy reading this review, as I complain about plenty of things in it. But please, do know that my only intention here is to help you to improve as a creator. I don't review levels to get to be mean to people, I do it because I like helping people. Also, I really like swamp-levels, so there that is.

Okay, so first of all, I'll talk about visuals. While they are far from bad, they have a good long step to take to be very beautiful. That is a shame, because it is a swamp level and swamp levels often rely on their visuals to carry them through. But why is this? Well, this level's biggest lack in visuals comes from its unnatural looks. Not at one point did I feel that anything in it felt natural. For example, the bounce-pad point that is shown in your last picture from the levels lacks any natural charm. The pillars are straight and even though they are stickered a bit doesn't help them to look any better. They look cheap and lazy that way. The exact same thing happened at the first obstacle in the level. It was the same rock, only multiplied a few times. It doesn't look good. At all. Also the butterflies-flying-out-of-the-bushes-effect was a stroke of genius. However, it was ruined by being used over and over and over and over again. However it is visible that you really put work into it, so it's not actually blank or boring at any point.

However, the decent visuals are countered by plain use of sound effects and music. The music was ok, I think. It was not exactly bad or annoying. However, I barely even noticed it after the beginning of the level. While some may say that it's a good thing and that the background music is not supposed to be noticed, I disagree. I think music and sound effects really are important to the level. And I barely heard any sound effects, apart from the times switches were used or the butterfly-wing-sounds. However, the soundtrack was custom (I think?) so I can't really blame it for being lazy. In the end, however, it was forgettable.

Then this level has its gameplay. It's the most important thing in every level, but however it's sadly often forgot about or moved to the side when the level's visuals are the main focus of attention. I was not expecting the most energetic gameplay, naturally. It is a swamp level, so of course not. However, I was really disappointed by this level's gameplay. It was mostly "obstacle number one ---> pause and walking to a checkpoint ---> obstacle number two..." and so on. The one point you tried to combine two obstacles into a more innovative one, it just made it broken. The part was frustrating. I have no problems with difficult levels, because it often gives you a rewarding feeling to get through a difficult obstacle. However, the obstacles here were either frustrating, which is not a good thing, they were too slow (the part with two rocks moving over the fire), or I found myself fighting against the camera (particularly the last obstacle). The camera is supposed to be used to make the levels more organic, not to challenge the player (unless of course, that is its actual purpose).

In conclusion, it's not really a bad level. No. It's just painfully average. However, I'd rather play this than any of those horrible and uninspired shark-survivals there are out there.

Visuals: 5/10
Music/Sounds: 5/10
Gameplay: 3/10
Conclusion: 4,3/10: Disappointing

My advice? In future, pay attention to more details than just stickers/decorations. Use more sound-effects to make the level more organic and do not force the gameplay into it. Make it flow. Make levels more concentrated around the gameplay and create the visual environment and music/sounds around the gameplay.

If you have any gripes about what I have said, feel free to point out things you feel are unjustified. But please, be polite like I have been while giving you this review.

Yours truly, FreeAim.

EDIT: Also know, that this is my personal viewpoint and it may not be the same for everyone. These are the things I find that are wrong with the level, not which necessarily are wrong in everyone's mind.
