The Great Musical Collaboration Experiment No. 2
Archive: 23 posts
By popular demand, the awkwardly-large musical collaboration returns! 8D Back in April 2012 I mooted the simple idea of attempting to create the largest individual collaborative music sequencer in LittleBigPlanet. By November, a group of 20 creators had produced a piece of music over 40 minutes long. The finished project can be witnessed here: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=y75jth6ZpSE And after some consideration, I've decided that it was worth giving it another go. This time I am attempting to make the project simpler, easier and more functional. I've taken it upon myself to get the ball rolling and hopefully give the project some momentum, but I am sincerely hoping that the sequencer will take on a life of its own, so that I can step back and assume the role of overseer rather than project "leader". A project like this needs no leader, just a mutual-agreed set of procedures and a lot of creativity...! The concept is very straightforward. Each creator produces a segment of music sequencer, as much or as little as they feel comfortable with. The style can be any style. The instruments can be any instruments. And when they are out of juice, they capture the sequencer and send it flying off to the next musician who is waiting to take part. Rinse and repeat. There are, however, several important things to keep in mind, so I'm listing them as clearly as I can, right here in this thread. The first Collaboration was a great learning experience, and so unlike last time, these rules and guidelines WILL be observed, for the sake of making the project work better. Trust me on this. I want to keep everyone content, but I will step in if I feel like an individual may be creating a hiccup in the happytimes. RULE 1: This is the main one, the golden one. Other people will be working on this sequencer, so PLEASE, for the love of Sack, try to be efficient with thermo. This doesn't mean you have to limit your ideas, it just means being considerate towards the other creators. In practical terms this means... RULE 2: Try to stick with the sequencer that is currently being constructed rather than plonking down a new sequencer nested inside the original when its your turn. Sequencer nesting has its uses, because it allows more freedom of dynamics/tempo/reverb effects, but should be only be used when the previous sequencer has reached its thermo limits. Which brings me to... RULE 3: No stickers. They look cool, and they can be used to make your mark on a sequencer, but this project is about the music. Stickers will eat up thermo. Not much, but enough to make a difference. If the sequencer pass through my hands and I find stickers on it, I will delete the stickers. So, if you please, kindly do me a favour and don't put them there. If you need to write something important on the sequencer for every contributor to read, use a yellow note emitter and leave your name. Three simple rules to keep in mind. That's all I ask! *grovel* The purpose of this thread is to highlight the fact that the Collab is going to be happening again, and that's about it - for now. If you are interested, post on this thread or reach me via PSN or Twitter! All thoughts, ideas and opinions are welcome. Once I've got a reasonable handful of names, I can figure out the fairest, easiest and most fun way of sorting out the details. There are some other things I will need to address before we get started, but right now I'm tired and forgetful and I have a mouth full of toasted crumpet, so I'll come back to them later. Oh, and sorry for such a wordy thread; I am a wordy beardy. Here are my leftover brainfarts: ... Joining forces with LBPMashup in some fashion. ... Publishing the finished song on the Craftworld Collab planet. Be well, weirdybeardy Amateur music maker, professional scatterbrain | 2013-02-22 20:57:00 Author: weirdybeardy Posts: 123 |
I missed out on the last one, count me in! | 2013-02-22 21:00:00 Author: Ethan23lol Posts: 42 |
I would be interested again I enjoyed the last one Unless of course, you want more variation from the last one, so it's not the same people., if that was the case I would step back. | 2013-02-22 21:58:00 Author: craigmond Posts: 2426 |
I feel like I fluffed up the last one with the random change of genre. I'd completely understand if you want more experienced creators in this one who weren't involved last time. I'll still offer a request though! I feel I've improved a lot and I've learned much more since last time. ^_^ I also could help get people in on this, I have a few extremely talented LBP musicians on my list who weren't involved last time. I could also start a topic over on LBN to give this more publicity. | 2013-02-24 09:55:00 Author: idgowans Posts: 24 |
I'd like to be a part of this again for sure. Just no million different sequencers there this time, please. Last time I had to throw in the first additional sequencer just because the first one was so full that it wouldn't stretch out any longer. | 2013-02-24 14:11:00 Author: chatchito Posts: 14 |

I was actually considering joining in on the first one before it started, but I just went on LBP2 and this forum less and less and it faded from memory. While I'm not sure how much I'll be on LBP2 for the moment, I definitely want to take part in this. Sounds like an awesome idea. And ****, a 40 minute track?! Interesting, lol. | 2013-03-02 23:03:00 Author: Force Ten Posts: 60 |

Just bumping this thread to provide an update... This project is officially joining forces with the LBP Community Mashup and LittleBigAudio. The details are still being organised, but the plan is for the finished song to feature in the LBP Mashup's combo-platformer level, AND feature as LittleBigAudio's 2000th song! For more info and developments, keep an eye on Twitter: @LBPMashup @LittleBigAudioo #TheGreatMusicalCollab2 My friend, GoldenCreativity, wants to take part! Noted. He/she's on the list! | 2013-04-12 15:29:00 Author: weirdybeardy Posts: 123 |
The sequencer's been through 6 creators, and I'm hunting for a 7th. PSN me if you want in. I'm trying to keep the project moving, but not doing very well. | 2013-04-24 13:08:00 Author: weirdybeardy Posts: 123 |
The project rumbles on. Because the song is getting so large, the sequencers have been placed on a microchip so they can be sequentially activated with batteries. Also, subtitles with creator names have been added. Big thanks to TheNegativeIon for that. When I get the project back in my own popit, I'll be blitzing my list to get through the priority participants as fast as I can... I'm starting to feel like the project is... possibly... maybe... going too slowly. We'll see. Thanks to all. Updates here, and on Twitter. | 2013-05-19 16:57:00 Author: weirdybeardy Posts: 123 |
Slap a rocket on it, so it can be propelled into the next participant's face! QUICK! | 2013-05-19 22:18:00 Author: Buttarms Posts: 142 |
