Ive made at least 10 levels but ive never finished any! i make a level, get bored and make a nother, and it keeps repeating, i never go back to a level because it usually has a dumb problem or something. In short, how can i get motivation to start (and finish) a level? i have tons of ideas but whenever i try them something goes wrong or i get bored or something and i never touch it again.

You get the motivation after you publish the level, and see your plays/hearts rising... Comments being left stating " Omg awesome level "

That's where the motivation comes, to build more levels... To finish one though... I'm not so sure.

Well, something that helped me to keep going was writing a blog. The fact that other people were reading my level progress (and frustrations) just encouraged me to keep going with what I had, even when I had major set backs.

I'm finding with my latest full level designs have very complex devices that take a lot of building and testing before they can get to a workable play testing level. Another suggestion might be to start with something simple to begin with. I know for myself my current projects are hard, complex and boring in the testing stage, but when they get to where they have been planned they work great. My TSR - Three Stage Rocket level is an example of the complex stuff I make.

But keeping people interested can help keep you interested in a project as well. You can share what you are doing with real life friends and they might give you some motivation as well. The TSR was fun to design but really, really boring to make, but the end result was worth it. It was helpful to have a real life friend encourage me along.

Just a few thoughts that have kept me going.

Sounds like you haven't found a subject you love. I think the easiest way is to focus on the things you enjoy and try to start there...less chance of getting bored.

Then to Whaaaaale's point, see some comments and hearts on your published level will get you motivated to start trying some new stuff. Other than that...maybe creating isn't your bag and you would be a great player and critique for the creators on this forum. We are all looking for feedback. Personally, I create because I enjoy it...not because I think I have to. Do what you enjoy!

Another thing that has helped me to continue in create mode is building levels that I personally enjoy and have fun. My tastes are different to other peoples.

Some people like hard levels, others easy levels. Some like prize levels. Some like physics levels, some story levels. Perhaps reflecting on what you enjoy playing might help give some more motivation to keep going with a project.

Well, my first post didn't really answer your question, so I'm going to add onto it.

You want to design a level, like the others have said, that really is YOU. Brainstorm a bunch of ideas, and think to yourself... Which one is really awesome.

I'm currently ( when the next patch is out ) building a level, based on a fairy like theme, I'm really digging the idea, and I have plenty of ideas for my level. I had a lot of help from OCK for this, so props goes to him as well.

My first level however, sucked... I'll just come out and say it, it was really just a level to see how familiar I am with the tools, it was going to be a really big level, taking you underground in the pits of hell, but it just wasn't my kind of level, thus making the level... Suck.

What I'm trying to say is, build a level that you know you will end, and love. A theme that you love, trust me when the theme and idea is in your head. Everything kind of just flows. You'll start brainstorming ideas on paper, laying out each room one by one, ideas popping in your head every second while your in the bathroom (:eek::eek::eek: ) it will all just flow once you have the idea that is YOU.

I hope this made sense...

I just recently finished a little inspiration session with my friends. What I asked them to do was to take a template (we agreed to use the wedding template level) and given one week, do whatever you feel like. This gives you a deadline to finish by, thus lighting a fire under your butt to get moving and to keep moving. It also forces you to just start making stuff. When you settle on a theme you can go back and change things up. Mostly, though, is that when you're done, you get to see what everyone else did... this is the best part. You get to see how each person took their level in a totally different direction, and it's great for getting ideas from. I recommend a group size of 3 or 4 to do this, so that way you can all play each others levels at the same time. : )2009-01-22 17:01:00

What helps me is to have a clear goal.

When I create a level I know what I want to achieve as a creation, I know what I want to bring to this game.

When you found what your goals are, planification is the second move and only way to achieve your goals.

ok you should
1. make the level on something you like
2. make 1 level at a time
3. if you have problems with your level work through them.

also LBPC has level making competitions you could enter one because it gives you a goal and deadline

Well, we have one running right now. Set the Scene (https://lbpcentral.lbp-hub.com/index.php?t=t=6647) is one which challenges you to build a chain reaction from one player activated switch. You don't have to make a full 20 minute long full thermometer story masterpiece to enter it.

As an added bonus and motivation there are some very nice prizes to those that participate. The deadline is approaching though! Get working on it!

Ahh man, I wish my friends had PS3's instead of Xbox's, this sounds like fun.
