Woohoo! PS Vita price drop!

Archive: 15 posts

The Vita gets a price drop at last (in Japan), officially lowering the new retail price to a flat 19,998 yen (about $220 USD) for BOTH the Wifi and Wifi+3G models, which represents a whopping 33% price reduction for the latter. With mint used Vitas selling at about 17,500 yen (about $195 USD) this price drop will push used units down ever so slightly to about 15,000 yen, and that's a pretty great price point. This is a big deal in a country where mobility is pretty much all about 3G (wifi being sparsely available outside of homes and with access charges as bad as or worse than 3G at cafes, etc.). The news comes 48 hours in advance of the Feb. 20 Sony Meeting expected to reveal the existence and market release date of the Playstation 4. The Vita will sell at the new retail price starting Feb. 28. Coordinating for an expected rush of interest in the Vita? Or pricing it lower in anticipation of nobody buying a Vita because the PS4 will deter shoppers for the rest of the year?

Keywords; for Japan.

Regardless, haven't had buyers remorse yet. Just hope this helps with 3rd-party support.

I think a price drop in Japan precipitates a worldwide drop. It makes sense this is happening in the home market first. The Vita was out here about six weeks (three months?) ahead of the west, so there's that, but I also think this is an announcement based on predicted Japanese consumer reactions to the coming PS4 news. We're coming up on the end of Q4 2012 and analysists may have decided this is the best time, paperwork and investor-wise, to drop the price in Japan. Expected sales performance of the Vita in other markets may not be as predictable, or it may be "worse" to drop the price now than in a few months from now, etc. I'm speculating. As a consumer, I'm very pleased. The Vita is finally in my price range.2013-02-19 06:12:00

I don't do much forum-ing anymore. I figure news for the system LBP is running on should count as LBP news, but that's just my opinion.

Anyspam, it's nice to see a price drop for the Vita since its been just about a year since launch. I'm still not getting one. xD

I think the fact that that news and media section is under LBP GENERAL suggests it's intended for lbp related news. this refers to a games system price drop so in the same way the ps4 info thread is suited to general GAMING, this thread too is fine where it is. back on topic, I'd say the lowered price point is a tad useless until proper support starts kicking in. It's well and good to say the VITA is now affordable but if it can't justify its price tag it's still a no-buy.2013-02-20 15:45:00

Free week of PS+ (valid between 2/28-3/18

Japanese PS + is normally a bit lacking but there's a few things that can easily be finished in a week if you have an account available.

Vita price drop + PS4 remote play support + free week of PS+ = Sony's attempt to get you to finally buy a Vita.

I'm still not buying one. xD

I love my Vita. I'd buy another if there was some way to have other "users", even if just the sub accounts... As it is, I'd have to put someone else's account on it in order to play online against it, which would be the whole point, and who would I choose? My wife? My son? My daughter? My other daughter? I'm not buying 4 more that's for sure....2013-02-21 15:30:00

I think they also gave you 10$ for psn also. But only some people who are apparently "loyal". lol
Great that there is a price drop. Considering that it's the most desired console in japan, It just needs a price drop to get more people to buy it.

Still over ?200 in the UK for a new WiFi Vita, and the bundled Vita on Amazon, but it does come with one game and a 4gb memory card. The cheapest Vita I've seen is a ?180 used one in Game. Hopefully a price drop in the UK will be coming soon.2013-02-25 07:54:00

I've seen vitas at ?170-80 on zavvi mega monday deals, though not for the last few weeks I admit. The console really needs a price drop to be considered even somewhat reasonable. as is, the VITA is as expensive as a current model ps3 bundle featuring loads of memory, a free game or two and a handset. surely sony can see no one is going to fork out for vita over ps3?2013-02-25 17:16:00

While the PR line for non-Japan markets seems to be "no price drop on Vita" I have no doubt those markets will get the go-ahead soon, especially if sales spike in a satisfying way in Japan. (Update: sales have spiked in Japan, up 4x weekly from 11,000 units to 44,000 as of March 6, 2013... let's see if it continues!)

My guess: western markets will finish out Q4 2012 with everyone saying "nope, nope, nope, the Vita stays at [whatever it's at]" while the number crunchers crunch numbers and decide when to drop and when to announce. The price drop could come as early as May 2013, but definitely no later than the launch of the PS4.

In fact I'd expect a bundle PS4+Vita at the PS4's launch that incentivizes shoppers to get both. Current hopes/expectations are that the PS4 will launch at no higher than $400. So imagine they nudge the line, release the PS4 solo at an overpriced $519.99, then offer a $599.99 PS4+Vita bundle next to it with a year of PS Plus membership, and it's a super deal by comparison.
