What are your favorite game assets (materials, stickers, etc.) ?

Archive: 14 posts

I spend a lot of time in LBP Vita and I find myself using the same sorts of things often, which of course makes me wish there were more of them.

I tend to use the "realistic" stickers category extensively (e.g., dirt, shadow, drip marks, etc.) as well as any industrial-ish decoration (e.g., pipes, metal plates, wires, vents). Along those lines I also seem to spend a lot of time in the metal category of materials, especially the see-through stuff - it's fun to layer them with the dephysicalize tool.

So, like the subject line says, what are your favorite assets in LBP Vita?

I don't know why, but I've always loved the Wood materials in LittleBigPlanet. Ever since the first one, there's just something about the various wood materials that look so NICE to me. I'm not sure what I learn towards sticker wise though, seeing as I've never really made a level using an extensive amount of stickers, I'd imagine though my preferences would be towards A) Bright Colors or B) realistic looking ones.2013-02-15 02:59:00

I am kinda open to what are really my favorites as it would depend on the level.

So far I've used and like the industrial looking materials as well as the colored plastic.

Stickers I have always been a fan of the realistic ones for shading and shadowing. Decorations I used a bunch of the gears and other industrial ones for bits flying through the level as well as the back layer for controls and such.

Not sure it is really an asset, but the dephysicalize tool was very handy for making merged layers much easier than that PS3 glitch tool. Was also really handy making things look there, but not get in the way.

I still miss spotlights though. I do love the lights that we get, but would really love a good beam of sorts, though rendering it properly on the Vita might be a nightmare as it seems only a few lights on a surface seem to register.

- All the lights
- The sails
- Everything under FoliageAh yes, I do love the light decorations - I use those quite a lot. Between those and the "neon" material you can make some pretty nice looking stuff.

As for the foliage... Come to think of it I haven't used a single foliage anything. I suppose I tend to make sci-fi and industrial type settings and don't need much of the green stuff. I have heard that some people have resorted to taking photos of plants and bushes and using those stickers to help vary the foliage options.

So far I've used and like the industrial looking materials as well as the colored plastic.Yes! The colored plastic is great, and in fact any of the color-tweakable materials are excellent. I should have included that in my list as well... There is a LOT you can do with color tweaking.

I still miss spotlights though. I do love the lights that we get, but would really love a good beam of sorts, though rendering it properly on the Vita might be a nightmare as it seems only a few lights on a surface seem to register.I agree, a spotlight would be very nice to have. A regular light plus the different "beam" decorations do make for some nice effects though... I suppose what I'd like is a light that did not have a circular output. Like, if you want to make a true spotlight where there is a light source that illuminates what it's pointed at, you have to somehow hide the unwanted lighting effects that spread out in all directions. I'm sure that's a lot to ask for the vita, so maybe just some additional light beam decorations? Maybe a little bit brighter as well?

Good question Bruv! Lol
K, assets, you say? Assuming I can list things other than decorations and materials?
The rear touch pad for moving the screen around! **** love this for placing large things of just wanting to see 'off screen' Or tilting the camera when placing decorations and stickers!
Yep, dephysicalise tool is AWSOME, like we talked about In the podcast, use it on EVERYTHING!
love the invisible material, very handy!
Decoration spinner is handy for certain things, allowed me to do stuff in my top downs that I could never have done before....
But my FAV thing of all?......NOTES!!! Omg NOTES!!! Oh I LUUUUUURRRVE them yellow little things!!!

Recently I've really started to love using sticker panel to try and get that ''cel-shaded'' cartoon-y look and so far so good! 2013-02-15 19:22:00

Oh wow... good call! Thanks for reminding me that yup, I LOVE the new use of NOTES!! LOVE LOVE LOVE them!

In LBP2 I thought they were awesome to help keep me organized. They made it very handy! In LBP1 I used to always be made fun of for my cardboard signs that had stickered notes on them that told me what groups of logic was for what. lol

..but now being able to use notes to show signs over making all your own fonts. Perfect!!

I haven't played LBPV yet... but this type of thing is the same across the games for the most part so...

oh wait. What exactly is counted as a asset? Hm All I know is to me nothing is more important then costumes imo as they are the only way to make 3D model characters in the LBP series. And nothing matters more to me then characters in a game or story ETC.

But besides from that... Decos matter a lot to me too... Depending on how you use them they are simply the best way to add detail to a level or even a costume IMHO.

Also I feel that a lot of the premade stickers are useless. A lot of stickers I use are ones i've made myself... of course i hear that it is harder to do in LBPV atm then LBP2. Still... Premade stickers are at the bottom of my list of stuff I find is useful in LBP. *mew

Yep, that can work quite well. I've seen a few levels that used photos as backgrounds or to create more detailed characters. The characters in Skanda Heaven are all photos, I believe.

You can have two light sources per surface (not counting global lighting). As a workaround you can use smaller pieces of material, rather than one large chunk of material. That's more efficient anyway.

What exactly is counted as a asset?Basically anything in the game - more specifically, anything you can use in create mode. Materials, decorations, costume bits, etc., are all "assets".

A lot of the premade stickers are very specific and aren't generally all that useful by themselves, but I often find that some part of them can be useful, like if you put them on sticker panel and then corner edit the shape down to cut off the parts you don't want to see.

Any sort of "shading" sticker, such as the various shadows, color fades, and dirt/drip/smudge stickers are hugely useful though and generally impossible to achieve any other way.

I also use lots of shading/dirt stickers. I discovered the error with the Timesaver DLC today ( more informations here : https://lbpcentral.lbp-hub.com/index.php?t=78111-Timesaver-DLC-unlocks-135-new-create-objects!-Avengers-New-Icons ) and I'm already keen on it ! More special effects stickers, explosion/symbols stickers... But the better ones are obviously the sprites/tiles ( 6 stickers for iron man/hulk/thor/stickers for top down games like boxes, floors...). They are perfect to do smoothers animations and backgrounds !2013-02-19 20:26:00

Hmm sounds like the company badly needs to add a Vita-touch-paint feature to LBPvita already for you guys. nowadays I actually use PSmove-paint for a handful of stuff still for my levels... *mew

I'm a fan of a lot more of the objects than in previous LBP's - the tree stumps are so cool if you're making jungle or natural levels, and if you layer those on with some mushroom decorations it looks awesome!
Anything that adds a bit of 3D and realism to the level is good in my book
