Renegade assault 2: Desert attack (BETA)

Hey all....been working real hard on my follow up level to my team picked 'Renegade assault' top down shooter.

The game play is a lot more fast paced than the first, it's an open world map, and most of the game play is now done in the heli
Use your heli to destroy the base. Rescue soldiers to upgrade your heli's weapons, destroy the radar towers that are jamming your lock on signal, and ....well, basically destroy EVERYTHING!

Unique elements: a fully working submarine style radar, a mini map that tracks your exact where abouts (thanks to comphermc for this was HIS idea logo wise) Destructable scenery. Varied and many new enemies.

Sorry for the bump, but I've made a significant improvement, that I thought was justified in doing so:

There is now an EASY option in the menu! Twice as much armour, only down side, you loose 20,000 points at the end ( oh and a humiliating chicken sound and sticker gets turned on just to remind you what a ....well, chicken you are

Great job! Yet another amazing level! Reminds me of Desert Strike or Jungle Strike from the SNES/Genesis era! Anyway it was intricate and beautiful... If I had to criticize anything at all... hmmm... I would like to see just a few very minor cleanup tweaks. for example, set a radius near the helicopter to turn on your controlinator text to only tell you to enter it when you're within range... also you could reduce initial load times by removing unneeded stats (like time played), but really all the extras are what make it so unique... so yeah! Sorry, I'm really reaching for criticisms here! It's a really amazing effort and great fun!!2013-02-15 21:58:00

yep, watched a few vids of desert/jungle strike to get ideas would love to do bigger maps/more complex mission based play, but the thermo is getting real tight! Appreciate your idea about turning controlinator instructions for soldier off, easiest solution there is just remove it, as the note tells you when you are close enough to board
As for the in needed stats, they all play apart in your score at the end, the quicker you finish the level, te less score deducted etc, and I doubt that will effect the loading times, it's the MASSIVE amount of logic on the heli and enemies that cause that! May think about spawning more once the game starts, but not sure about that yet...scared about breaking what at the moment works lol

So, added a 'chicken hunt' when on easy mode: chickens spawn every now and then that you can hunt down for extra points trashy pointless, but adds a bit of humour

So, not much crytisisms, guess I'm doing some thing right

hi shade,

well i just throw some points right away, i mean lets just cut the usual bull-****, lvls great and u know how to do a topdown shooter blablabla...

the map in the left corner is great, the radar thing looks weird... i mean, its the shadow lol... i guess u aware of that... not sure if u can change that i see the problems... still it looks really awkward... i found a spot where the sand material lay over eachother and a flickering effect is to see, i guess u can fix that with position layering.... one problem i allways had with your two new levels... personally for me all the enemies takes way too much bullets... they go down fast with rockets.... but... well... i can imagine taking down a turret or a tank or that big fat heli takes a while with a machine gun... but those foot soldiers? lol... its probably cause of limitations i guess on how much u can add in the level... i would rather prefer to destroy and kill 100 enemies with a few shoots, like a blastfest, (im really used to that with all topgun shooters i ever played... basically even in some SNES games u take down a tank with a pistol in a few shoots lol, its unrealistic but was allways much fun) but i guess it would lead to lags and things... i mean i can imagine, with the levelsize limitations and the lags if u would have too much going on it makes more sense the enemies are tougher overall... but its ok... its just my opinion.... taking down bigger enemies with just bullets is very annoying, so it kinda lets u search the map for rockets... which is good...

badge looks awesome... if u destroy a enemy helicopter the repair things and weapons upgrades are floating in the air, which looks weird, and if u exit the heli, the map should better dissapear, i guess, looks really weird lol....

whats with an option for the soldiers to run? like with a little stamina bar..... i guess thats not too hard for u to implent... i would actually just love to drive any other vehicle and im probably not the only one.... some tank or jeep... would be amazin tbh... even if its only very optional...

well i just stopped playing after destroying those radars, didnt pay attention and didnt know where to go next lol...

hmm, forgot what else i had in my mind.... its mainly just about details... how to rescue that dude in the house? and did u thought of displaying the life in % of buildings too? For example those exploding tanks? like maybe not on the fences but just some things... like buildings and so on...

such another great level.... so much love put into some details... its amazing... those trucklike things that unloads and the footsoldiers comes out... even just the little animation if u lift up with the heli... and so on.... really great... u gotta excuse me, that i never finished your first level or probably wont finish this second one.... i enjoyed them very much... but they are very long and its takes time lol.... im not really feeling into playing them over and over.... its like with u and platformers lol... u review many of them and got great suggestions to make, but i guess u wont really come back to them.... i rather play platformers hehe... but i guess u got alot of fans out there now, who cant wait to play through this and get a good highscore

well... another thing.... if u are in a "base" with the repair thingies, u can have very easy battles... im not sure if u want that, its an advantage for the player and fun, but i dunno.... u can just hold fire and bring down those big tanks and helis and basically are invincible..

awesome work u did with this... its gonna be another hit. ^^

really wonder what u do after this.... well.. its not gonna be a platformer lol

Edit 2: Well after listening to that podcast... u revitalize some older lvl? man, im pretty interested in your older levels now... in general i should check some ps3 or psp levels out... i got both games but never got in the community levels there much.... i never even played lbp psp lol

Hey rough tea can always rely on you to give Indepth and honest reviews, very much appreciated!

You come up with (as always) some VERY valid points! Let me see.... Yeah I knew about the overlapping sand, not sure why I didnt sort that though lol.
VERY good point about the shadow from the radar, I'll use sticker panel and a sticker instead.
And yep, will be making the HUD invisible when you exit heli...was just being lazy with that one

K, I like your idea about sprinting with the soldier, guess it would be a pretty simple thing to do

You certainly aren't the first to mention being Able to use other vehicles, but omg, that makes things so so much more comicated!the thermo is more than maxed, I emmit alot of the enemies and buildings, I doubt te game would run if I made the enemy vehicles drive able... I guess I could add a single jeep or something in there that can be boarded but I'm not sure what the point would be game play wise, perhaps just as you say, optional just for the heck of it?

Health percentage notes for the buildings? They are so easy to blow up I didn't really see the point cluttering up the scenery, but certainly would be easy to do.

As for te soldiers being easier to kill...once again, you arent the first to mention this, so I'd better do some thing about it

To get to te end boss, you need to destroy all buildings in te base, once you destroy all the satellite radar dishes, you unlock the lock on for the rockets (touch an enemy to light up a target over them, then your rockets become heat seeking

Glad you listened to the podcast, yep, my next leel will be a touch based comedy exploration leel, gonna be a bit different to what I've been doing of late, but I believe five top down shooters in a row is enough lol. Will be nice to apply some of my zany humour

Well, i got to play through this one atleast i really wanna see the endboss fight...

If i were u, i would just add a single jeep or something, just for the fun of it, i bet a lot of people appreciate it... even its it very optional...

Those explosive tanks really take some time to blow up... i guess a "life-meter" on them would make sense... better looking than those percentage bars, would be some life bars... but its a silly detail i dunno...

And i really would like something different by u.... even its some revitalized level...

btw. music sounds great too.. well all those graphical effects and sounds are neat...

and offtopic:

i deleted all my really sucky levels or levels that give the impression im a spammer or something lol im still a noob tho, and now i lost some bigger project i was working on (20-30 hours), well im improving but u were right thats its a long lurning curve to become really good...

Hey k, so, I've done a jeep!! I couldnt get it to work the way the heli does (my logics so comicated and I didn't ever plan to make more than one vehicle when I did it, so you literally have to JUMP into the jeep to control it! Not exactly what I wanted but made life a lot easier than redoing all the soldier and heli logic!

Made a HUD for the soldier, and now has sprinting/stamina

Enemy soldiers are now VERY easy to kill!

Not sure about your health bar Idea, though it's very easy to do!

As for new project, yep, once this is finished I will be doing a comedy puzzle level, though don't expect much for a while, gonna take me a LOOONG time!!

Yep, you never stop learning in lbp, and the only real limitation is your imagination and of course how much time you have
