Board Games!!! The Geekiest of Persuits

Archive: 12 posts

Hey Guys,
What's going down in groove town?

Some of you will be like "Hooray!/Oh God! Mac is back!"
Others will be like "Who is this Macnme me fellow and why should I give a hoot?!"

"Where have you been?" others may ask....

Well... recently I have been mostly playing Board Games.

Why?
Because Board Games are awesome. Nothing beats gathering your mates, getting some munchies and spending the entire night engrossed in a classic Board Game.

Not Monopoly - or Snakes and Ladders, or any of those family board games (though there's nothing wrong with those);
But seriously Geekly Board Games - with Dice & Tokens & Cards & Miniatures & Rules about Rules about Rules!

My current playlist includes;
Arkham Horror (seriously one of the most fun Board Games I have ever played).
Descent: Journeys in the Dark (both 1st Ed + Sea of Blood exp: And 2nd ed with Lair of the Wyrm expansion)
Galaxy Truckers (brilliant "Build a spaceship & watch it fall apart" game)

And I've been digging out my old classics like Space Crusade, Advanced Hero Quest, Talisman.

There have been so many excellent board games released in recent years, and I'm only recently starting to catch up. I'm on a bit of a spending spree just now... in the last 3 days I've bought Pandemic, Castle Panic & Battle Station
I find myself devoting more time to board games than to video games recently.

So what Board games have you been playing?

And if not.... WHY NOT?!

Oh man, as soon as I saw your title I thought HERO QUEST! Best board game ever! From my limited experience anyway. So pleased you mentioned it.

Hero Quest is amazing. Loved that game to death.

As with most things, enjoying something with a friend in real life is generally more fun than online with strangers, or alone, so it's no surprise that could end up being a bigger hobby than video gaming, at least during a downcycle in good games (we're there right now, until at least Q2 2013). I would play more board games AND video games if I had people to play with. Not really comfortable doing the community thing at such as Games Workshop or dropping in with strangers for things. I need friends, at home, in person.

Talk more about Arkham Horror please!

Yeah, I'm not one for gaming with strangers either. And most "co-op/multiplayer" video games require 2 consoles + 2 copies of the game+ 2 TVs. Or you'll be playing with random internet strangers.

Playing a board game does feel more like playing the old 4 player split-screen type games. It's weird that with bigger more powerful machines, and bigger clearer TV displays, there are fewer and fewer games that allow same screen co-op.

Arkham Horror you say?
Hmmmm, how best to describe this awesome game?!

The Blurb reading would be: A game of Lovecraftian Horror set against the Call of Cthulhu mythos backdrop. You must move your character around the board, trying to close portals to other dimensions while also defeating (or running away from) the horrible creatures that spew forth from those portals in order to prevent an Ancient Evil from awakening.

But I think of it more as an Epic Story Generator.
Each time I've played it there has been these weird scientology style coincidences that combine to create a narrative thread for each game.
The first time we played it, it seemed to be all about the Undead... Zombies swarming out of the graveyard as the sun was eclipsed.
The second time was all about madness - people losing their minds and going insane, and seemed to spend a lot of time in the Asylum, with most of the action being focused there.
The 3rd time - it was all about the Citizens of Arkham. All of the cards we drew were for rioting villiagers, or vigilante mobs roaming the streets (thankfully clearing them of monsters).

It's a co-op game aswell - with 2-8 players vs the board.
You take the role of an Investigator (randomly selected at the start), each with a unique back-story and special ability. You also get fixed items (things like weapons/money/tokens) depending on your character - and a few random items.
At the end of each round, you draw a "Mythos Card" that will tell you what horrible stuff is about to happen to you.
And it's nearly always horrible.
This is a really punishing game - but in a fun way. It's as much fun to lose fantastically in this game as it is to win.

I've played it about 9 times now - and have only beaten it once.... but that just makes me want to play it more.

i can see Arkham Horror being a regular fixture for me for the foreseeable future

I loved Hero Quest back in the day! Me and my friend used to create quest packs and play them! He used to have a very old game called 'Dark Tower' (1981)... If only we would have kept them! 2013-02-14 04:56:00

Dark Tower was a classic.
Good luck trying to get ahold of it again. You're talking at least $200-300 on Boardgamesgeeks.com

That's the other funny thing about board games... is they tend to go up in value with age, as they go out of print and become harder and harder to get ahold of. They retain their value really well.

And a new board game is about the same price (if not cheaper) than a video game.

My mate owns Warhammer Quest - which is the spiritual successor to both Hero Quest and Advanced Hero Quest.... it's also incredibly awesome.

Getting a Board Game night on Friday with some workmates (I'm starting to get them into it aswell)

It really does feel like Board Games are becoming cool again (or for the first time)...

... or is it just me being completely out of touch with what's "cool"?!

Ahhhh, so that's the Cthulhu game! I've seen it mentioned here and there. The artwork must be awesome -- or is it all just text and imagination? That's great too. Creativity-wise there seems to be so much opportunity to just MAKE games out of whatever's around. Some dice, some chips, a playing surface and a coherent narrative and some rules... it really comes down to having good people to play with.2013-02-14 06:32:00

I've been toying with my own ideas for a board game...
It's basically the exact game I want to play, because I can't find "the exact game I want to play" on the market.

It's actually A LOT harder than you would think.
Many of these game designers are mathematicians. Coming up with a good game mechanic, that flows well, isn't too complicated, isn't unbalanced but is also fun and interesting to play is a skill.
It takes a lot of play testing to get right.

The Arkham Horror artwork is beautiful. And it has text from H P Lovecrafts short stories, so it really fires your imagination.
But the way the game flows just lends itself so much to story telling... a mix of the setting, the characters, the items, and the events all manage to tell a unique story each time.

Oh yeah, I don't mean to trivialize games creation at all. Just that, if you have creative friends you can get by with so little materials to enjoy the core game. It could be, for example, Hero Quest as drawn out on napkins using small biscuits and gumdrops. So long as everyone knows the rule and narrative, and you're in good company, it'd be just as fun as the real thing. That's what I mean. If the Cthulhu game has amazing nightmare artwork on cards and a lavish board setup that's brilliant, but as you say if the wealth of the fun is in the imagination of how things are going you could basically just use the cards and whatever placeholder items from an old shoebox! I love games that are flexible that way.2013-02-15 06:37:00

I barely play board games, but that's because I don't HAVE any that I really like. I'll pull out Monopoly once or twice a year, but that just gets boring.

I've always wanted to try an interactive board game, like Weapons and Warriors. Although it takes forever to set up!

But, yeah. Sadly, I've only ever played common board games, like Monopoly and what not. Ehh, maybe in the future I'll pick up a cooler one (Even though I don't think they're considered cool. )

Yeah, I've had my eye on Zombicide for a while now.
I've heard it's fun - but flawed.

Apparently akin to a Zombie themed 'Pandemic' (another GREAT boardgame).

Still not sure what to go for for my "Big Box" zombie game. (zombie fluxx/zombie dice etc not counting)
