Hey folks. I'm here to present my latest obsession: a puzzle game for LBPVita called Hexagonal.

The basic idea is simple. You must use Touch to place pieces onto a hexagonal grid in such a way that they deflect a colored laser to one or more colored targets. Pretty quickly, you'll be managing and splitting multiple laser beams, weaving them together to create that perfect path!

Every puzzle has several solutions, but each also has an optimal solution. Each optimal solution requires one less piece than you are allocated. Since you earn a bonus star every time you find an optimal solution, you must be clever to earn all 50 of them! There are also two bonus levels that are unlocked when you reach 25 and 50 stars, respectively.

If you play the level and attain a score of which you are most proud, you can press the POD button from the main menu to trigger the scoreboard.

Development

This level was originally conceived as a standalone app for iOS or Android, but I just couldn't wait to get the idea out there! I ran some tests to see if it could be done in the LBPVita editor; the hardest part was of course getting hexagons to line up nicely! Heh. In all, it took about 2 weeks to put it together, but those were a very focused 14 days!

Finally finishing this level feels VERY nice indeed, given some of the obstacles I faced while building it. The first is the sheer complexity of the game board, requiring many, many sensors and lots of sticker panel pieces to create the laser beam effect. It got the point where editing the level with all the logic included was impossible, so I had to set up loading screens during which everything important is emitted.

All of the puzzles had to be created in a separate level and emitted when they are needed. Sometimes making one puzzle could take up to an hour, as I considered all possible angles and where it fits into the progression. Then I had to test, test, and test to make sure that I was able to find all solutions to a given puzzle (so that an optimal solution could be included). I want to take this opportunity to thank mrsupercomputer for helping to test the puzzles, and even making one himself! Thanks, buddy!

So there you have it. I've made yet another puzzle game, and I hope you enjoy it as much as I do. Cheers.

Ooops! I pasted everything from LittleBigPlanetarium, and forgot that since the auto-level-info-generator-doo-dad doesn't work here, neither does the link it provides! Thanks, and fixed.

Thanks so much!

No, thank you for the enthusiasm!

Catches quite a few out. Most welcome!

Your latest endeavor was brilliant! There are so many wonderful things I would like to say about this level, which reminds me of an enhanced Arcade level from story mode!! Incredible!

I thought the menu layout was sleek & superb, as well as the star system! I'm working on a wholly emitted mini-platform series using stars/scoreboard point triggers as well. So if you have the time one day, I would really look forward to a turorial on the memorizer/star logic so I can streamline & clean up my logic process!

P.S.: I did manage to achieve 25 points, however my bonus level remains locked... Do I additionally need to complete the game with 1 star first, or is it a glitch? At any rate, thanks for the masterpiece!!

Hm, I'll see what I can do. I have more free time now that this level is completed. I got a video camera for Christmas that I should probably get some use out of.

Sounds like a bug. Let me look into it.

Edit: Yep, it's a silly bug. I apparently have forgotten how sequencers work, or they changed how they work from LBP2. I'll have a fix implemented in the next 20 minutes, after which you should be able to load the game back up and play your bonus level.

Edit2: Fixed now. Rather than try to detect when it your star count signal gets to 25% (which equals 25 stars), I just check to make sure that your star count signal is greater than 24/99 (about 24.5%). The game seems to like that much better.

I saw that you published this level in my recent activity (since I hearted you) and thought it mustve for sure been locked because no one had played it yet, but it wasnt! And this game was AMAZING!!

Here are my thoughts on it:

I love the start screen. That looks really cool, and sets the whole "high tech" atmosphere for the game. I tried settings first, and it was a really organized. I like how you put the "unlock all" feature, too.

I was expecting 8-10 levels like in the arcade games, (I didnt read your description), and was very surprised to see 25! (And the two bonus).

Ill admit, I dont really like puzzle games, but this is definitely an exception. It all ran so smoothly and was so simple to play, but mustve been a pain in the butt to make.

My only bit of critisism for you is maybe to include a how-to section. All it has to say is the object of the game and how to get stars. I know you already put this in your description, but it couldnt hurt to put it in game too.

Overall, amazing game. Definitely Team Pick worthy.

A new level by comphermc, at the instant i saw that name i had to play it

I bow down in worship lol (i started creating with lbpv and just recently found out that u are a big name in the lbp universe... well i downloaded all your tutorial videos from youtube and try to watchem to improve myself)

Well, there isnt anything negative to say really... probably a quick explanation "ingame" would have been nice, but tbh after a few seconds and laying down the first pipe, its totally clear on what to do.

The Level itself is so professionell made in all aspects, if this is not gonna be another teampick for you, than i will eat my hat. It wouldnt only be worth a teampick, this would be worth to implent in future dlc`s as a minigame.

Im doing a Puzzle Game myself atm and allthough i watched some video of yours explaing menu cameras etc. i just find myself in a mess of cameras and cables and somehow having problems to get it work properly... its not a problem with a few movie cameras or creating a menu, but well, if its get too much... i encounter a lot of problems... especially sometimes a movie camera wont turn off... or take me to back to one, it shouldnt, which makes no sense at all..

If i read correctly the different puzzle boards take place in one spot and u emit all of them? Thats probably how i should make it too i guess... with all "boards" in different spots with a movie camera for everyone, its a real mess...

Well anyways,

definitely a great great great level.

Hey Comph! Got a bit of time to at least play a through a few stages of this. Epic fun!! I love this type of puzzle game. So well done and polished. Fantastic job mate!

Could not find one even little thing to snap at you about... well, unless I say it was "too good!!" lol

Curious how you did the photos though! ..very nice quality!

Definite revisit to play this one and continue!!!

I am hax0r.

Also, pressing the PS button and Start at the same time will take a screenshot, which saves to your Vita's memory card. You can then use Content Manager (http://cma.dl.playstation.net/cma/win/en/index.html) to transfer them to your computer, or you can get a Flickr app on the Vita to upload them to a Flickr Account. I find Content Manager to be easier, but it requires you to install that on your computer.

comphermc! Another amazing level. I'm dying to know how you made the lasers because it's exactly what I wanted to do for my newest level. Do you have a video for that? Thank you!2013-02-04 04:49:00

I can answer that I think. I'm not sure exactly what material he used for the lasers, I would assume the sticker material though...
What he did, if I am not mistake, was lay out EVERY SINGLE POSSIBLE BIT OF LASER the player could ever hope to put out in each level. and have said pieces activate depending on where you plop down your pieces.
Incredibly complicated.
Though Comp may have done it different. I can't be sure.

You are correct. The fact that there are different pieces also gives the effect of the laser propagating, or traveling, across the board.

Congratulations, I'm er....not really use to this feeling.... I ....Erm, well, I er, can't think of ANY crytisisms!!!!! Hehe, I KNEW This level was gona impress me, but I was determined to try and find something that I could offer some ideas on, but alas I am stumped....perhaps I should just enlarge your ego and praise you for everything that is RIGHT about this game, but heck, you've already heard that from every one else!
In a sentence then? A slick masterpiece of engineering, beautiful mechanics, simple addictive gameplay, AWSOME! How's that

I've Been a fan of your tutorials on YouTube for a loooong time now, and was sooo excited to see you have come over to the vita and doing another tutorial, strange how excited I was when I saw some one retweet your new vid
I admire your ability to be so concise with your explanations, so much so, that i can't bare to watch any other tutorials on you tube any more lol.
Plan to do more? You jumped at the chance to do he last, do I was wondering, did you just stop because you were running out of ideas?
Trying hard to think of a suggestion for a tutorial, but at this moment I can't think of anything that I'm stuck on

Keep up the good work mate!

Plan to do more? You jumped at the chance to do he last, do I was wondering, did you just stop because you were running out of ideas?

There are three reasons I stopped:

I didn't have any ideas that really wanted to make tutorials on. That changed when LBP PS Vita came out, but I didn't have a good way of doing tutorials on the Vita. My lovely wife got me a camera for Christmas, which is what I used in the latest.
I was working on LittleBigPlanet all day with Tarsier, and really couldn't bring myself to do even more LBP in my free time. Things are a bit different now, so I can probably start to consider doing other tutorials.
I moved to a new apartment in September, in which I got an office. This meant my computer and PS3 were in different rooms, making video capture on PS3 a hassle. Moving forward, my tutorials will likely be on Vita, since I can record those at my desk (or wherever I want, really).

Keep up the good work mate!

Glad to hear you are 'back'
I can't say I know much about you, I struggle to keep up with two forums (lbpc and lbn, I couldn't fathom joining a third ie: littlebigplanetarium so I had no idea you were working with Tarsier, developing? **** fine lbp on the vita, does everything I always wanted the ps3 version to be!

So, any thoughts on the next tutorial? I'm in the process of making 'renegade assault 2' and I was wondering, can you think of a SIMPLE way of tracking a player / tags to be able to plot your position on a large map of the playing area? The only way I can think of doing it is y placing pieces of sticker panel in grids across the whole playing area with tag sesors on that relate to a grids on the map that light up....did that on the ps3, massive headache! Not sure even if you did know a simple solution wether you'd do a tutorial for it as its not exactly a issue that would help tr majority of creators, but worth asking seems you are the guru of problem sving on here

Keep up the good work

Yeah, not sure it merits a whole review, but I can think of a simpler way of doing it (even though we are way off topic now).

Have two pieces of sticker panel follow the player horizontally and vertically, by disabling up/down movements on the followers and turning the vertical one on its side. On each include a sensor to detect how far it is from the bottom left corner, effectively giving signals for X and Y coordinates.

http://i.imgur.com/SX3hHJp.png

You can then use two positional pistons on your mini-map/HUD map to move an indicator around. You can either use two pistons at right angles to one another, sort of like an L, to move the indicator around or... it might look nice to move a vertical and a horizontal line to the appropriate position so their intersection indicates the player position. Think crosshairs.

You sir are absolutely crazy for even attempting to make a level like this! I can't even begin to think how complex it was to create and how much logic must be going on behind the scenes (but since you have each puzzle in a different level I imagine it's butt-loads!!)

However I'm glad you did something so crazy because this is one of the most addicting things I've played on any platform, let alone LBPV, and I think it would have been at home on my ipad, heck I might even have shelled out the 69p to buy it

Brilliant level from a brilliant creator, I hope you'll bring out more levels, and if we're lucky a platformer? Too much to ask? hahaha, either way a <3 and a
