Special requirements for transferring data to new PS3?

Archive: 10 posts

Hi

I've just bought a new superslim Ps3 as my 60GB launch machine is looking on its last legs. Just wanted to check if I need to do anything special like with LBP2 to transfer my karting data (created levels etc) across?

As far as I can tell, you, and I, are pretty much out of luck for now. Initially I assumed LBPK saved everything in the regular game save, in stead of in the game data like LBP1/2, because there isn't any import/export profile functionality. But I got YLOD this week, so I copied my backup to a new PS3, yet all my self made costumes, karts and levels on my moon were missing. Then I checked the game data, and what do you know, there's a LBPK creations data there. As there is no import/export function, and the PS3 has no native way of copying game data (AFAIK), I think all we can do is publish stuff and download it on the other machine. Which doesn't even work for costumes and karts.

I've posted a problem report on getsatisfaction ( https://getsatisfaction.com/littlebigplanet/topics/missing_an_import_export_profile_function_to_backu p_or_transfer_creation_data) and tweeted to @michaelbuffaloe, hoping he can help. For all we know it's already in the coming patch, but if it isn't...

Why is this so complicated? LBP is a big franchise for Sony - either backing up needs to be made simpler, or Sony needs to include some kind of specially flagged game data in backups.

So now I need to republish my level as copyable, and publish all my test levels with WIP data?

Posted this in your problem report.

I did a test - copied my Karting save data to usb stick, deleted the data from the PS3, then copied from the usb stick. I found the levels on my moon were still there, I didn't have any costumes or karts saved. I also tried just copying the save data to another profile, and that did not copy the levels on my moon. My tests were done on the same PS3, I haven't tried moving data from one console to another. Copying to a usb stick might also work to transfer from one PS3 to another.

Edit: Please reply and let us know if you're successful in transferring the data. If so, other's may need to know how it worked.

Yeah, that sounds about right. Your levels were still there because they're stored in "LittleBigPlanet Karting User Created Content" under game data on your PS3. I've done the transfer of the game save to a new PS3, under the XMB it says 10 levels (or whatever number) initially, but after having started up the game it becomes 0.

I've heard fixed YLODs don't last very long. For now I'm keeping my old PS3 shut down until I hear something from UFG. Holding off on Karting until then.

I did a data transfer from my old PS3 to new one. Save game *and* game data appear in the XMB (140MB for user created content), but when you start the game it's not appearing (all pod/earth customisations are gone, no levels on the moon)

I'd activated the new PS3, don't know why it wasn't picking up the game data

Now need to go back to the old PS3 and publish all WIP levels just so I can download them.

Oh, so direct PS3 to PS3 transfer via ethernet cable does copy all the game data as well then? 'Cause that would have saved me hours of installing LBP2 patches. Love how they reduced all the LBP1 patches to just two, though. 2013-02-04 14:25:00

yes, but it doesn't seem to be recognised - started up and the moon was still empty.

Michael Buffaloe responded to my getsatisfaction problem. Basically, it's not something many people use so it doesn't have priority. So, we won't be seeing it for a while, if at all. 2013-02-04 19:34:00

So the 'solution" is to publish all your levels even WIP that aren't playable. Cluttering up the community, then do a transfer and download the back to your moon?

You'll still lose custom karts, costumes, pod and earth decorations.

Really I blame Sony for not having a system that can back up game content properly, but it is ironic that its Sony properties that are exposing the problem.
