Explorer Sack #1 (Village Outskirts)

Archive: 10 posts

Hi! I'm making a new series called "Explorer Sack" and this is the first installment. In this level you must take your sack through the outskirts of a village with nothing but a pair of gloves and some awesome apples. You have to throw the apples at a few switches then put your apple throwing skills to the test when you come across a nasty monster that wants to eat you, but is allergic to apples.

In this level you control a sackbot dressed up as your character instead of your actual character. I did this because I want to start practising them more and there isn't any other reason yet, there may be a few minor glitches 'here and there' but I'm sorting them out as soon as I spot them.

There is also a shortcut near the start for anyone epic enough to find it, and you get my will.i.am costume as a prize for finding it. This level can be completed without losing lives, because I finally realised how annoying it was when I made the player constantly get killed to activate new checkpoints and for once I've done a level that isn't based in a cave.

I intend on keeping this level up, unlike the one I made in a haystack that sadly got glitched really bad when I edited ONE shape so I hope I won't end up deleting this post within 24 hours of putting it up

Medium/hard difficulty, the difficulty depends on how good you are at throwing apples
(Warning, funny pun included)

EDIT: I'm working on a second part to this level but to prevent glitches I'm going to release it seperate instead of as a link .... the 2nd part uses 3D layers (badly) so I will try and put them into the first part soon too. I like trying new things!

I played it and find it pretty good. Apple throwing is fine, but I would suggest adding more checkpoints for multiplayer, because when one dies others players are stuck watching for sometimes many minutes, just because the previous/next checkpoint is too far to reach. Also, I don't see the point placing the last checkpoint so far before the boss fight, and low gravity there. The boss fight is good in theory but I find it too hard even in multi, due to burning rocks falling too quickly (they should come after one or two succesful shots to increase difficulty, but not be there since the very beginning). We simply gave up and throw apples on the right side just to make a path out.

I didn't experienced any glitch with sackbots, except one time when the costume was still there after one death, which is really a minor bug. Good work overall!

Yeah... I don't have anyone to play levels with so I mainly just put them up as 1 player instead because even if I did I wouldn't be able to figure it out still

I'll sort the boss out tomorrow, going to bed in a few minutes because I'm getting tired and I'll try to sort out other things too

the reason I did so little checkpoints in the first place was because I did a test level with sackbots before and every time I died I wouldn't respawn as it set my character to a sackbot from the previous checkpoint. Had to keep restarting the level, I'll try something with this soon too :$

(I've edited this 4 times now :L)
should I just put a checkpoint before the boss and forget about the sackbot for that one little bit?

EDIT:

There, ok, I'm re publishing again now as '1.6'

I don't really know how to sort that problem out properly, but...

I've put a checkpoint next to the boss and no sackbots come out of it

44143
I've put this weird block thing in the way so what happens now is the rocks fall down for longer periods of time but you also get more time to deal some damage before you have to hide on the back wall again.

Anyway, I did this to make it a little easier from the start:
The emitter on the left shoots the fire in to the middle layer
The emitter on the right shoots the fire in to the front layer
So if you can control which layer you're standing on when they fall, you shouldn't get hit by them and you should still be able to hit the 'Pyromaniac' as it covers 2 layers, not one like it did when I was originally testing it out on another planned level that went wrong

There is also a shortcut near the start for anyone epic enough to find it

I found it, and a big bug was waiting there too.
In your shortcut, you left the button that triggers the explosives where the prize is. That is, when you take the prize, you explode as well... and for some reason, you reappear at the checkpoint at the top of the tower, skipping 2/3 of the level, and most of the fun that went with it. So, that's a pretty efficient shortcut, in a way.

If the problem is due to sackbots, I would suggest to get rid of them, because, as you said, it was just a test and they add nothing to the game itself.

Just before the boss, some apples are spawning in the air for no apparent reason.
The boss itself is still undefeatable. I shot endlessly apples to him and nothing goes as expected, so either you want us to success in 20 trickshots to the top of his head (which can't be done because trampolines don't go that up), either you need to add some sort of visual or sound to indicate that shooting the boss works in a way or another.

I'm sorry to say it, but the checkpoint just before the boss is the only improvement I found since the last time we played. But that's how we learn: try, try, try again...

Played your level: you have used very nice ideas.
Its funny to solve the little riddles to make your way through the level.
And a big yay: you used a sackbot and the player is able to use emotions! Great! Most creators who used sackbots to play with, forget about that

To be honest, I don't liked the boss fight very much. I thrown five or six apples on him and died several times.
20 apples are a little bit to much in my opinion.

However: overall it's a nice level which deserves a big yay

Also, there's something I've needed to do to the boss since the start but just forgot about it.
I made it so only the red bit of the apples can be used to hit the boss, but I'm thinking about just biting the bullet (if it sounds right here) and making it so the green bit can damage him too but that would be a problem because then it would be way too easy!! Not that I really care if it makes other people happy :$

EDIT: The reason I put the sackbot at the boss in the first place was because of this funny pun I had lined up. I went 2 hours laughing (because I laugh alot) because when the boss died the character said "Well, how do you like them apples?!" and it was a nice touch to the level having it there. I'm still using sackbots for levels with characters though because if I put less danger in I need less checkpoints. Just means I have to make the level fun too

EDIT#2: I really need to update the speech and subtitles too, that's another problem.
When it says about the checkpoint up in the clouds, it says after "For a few seconds anyway" and I really don't like how I did that, and at the start it said about having 10 tries to press the switch when it was actually infinite. Only reason I haven't made these changes yet is because on Monday my PS+ thing ran out and I had to use the disk which meant I lost save and couldn't edit the level then yesterday I got PS+ back and edited it again, but I spent more time editing The Animal Catcher as I bought all of the packs I lost a while ago back (by forgetting an email for another account that I used 3 years back) and that level was bad. Didn't work properly...

Ok, sorting out the boss now with something I hope will work and I will edit this post instead of making a new one when it's completed and I can change the level to 2.0 xD
----------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
for the first 5 shots: Boss does nothing, you're just free to hit it 'as you please'
for 5-10 shots: it's arms start shooting fireballs at you on to the floor
for 10-15 shots: wave of fire balls comes falling down at you
for 15-20 shots: easy again, nothing happens, the same but without eyes or arms

I think, either that or I've messed up and I don't really mind because it's more fun that way
Also, no green bit on the apples anymore. If you go under it the apples splat and get destroyed but after 10 hits the apples don't splat when you're under it anymore.

Hope this is better!! Now i need to sort out the level link again

EDIT: OK, for anyone who had trouble with the boss, try it one more time and see if this is better, I've made it so you have to shoot it 17 times before it dies and it was 20 before, so that's one thing I fixed.

It took 5 shots for something in its head to dissappear and make it shoot out fire
It took 10 shots for the arms to break off and them annoying waves of fireballs to come out
It took 15 shots for the waves to stop coming
It took 17 shots for the boss to die

And I've sorted out the level link

When the boss is dead, jump to the worm hole
You can use it once the boss is dead
That teleports you to the other side of a wall and then the level link is there
Sadly it seems that was the easiest option, so it may seem stupid but it's the best way I could get it to work

Update 2.0 is now up and running :L
