GAUNTLET: 1-4 Player ADVENTURE

Archive: 15 posts

Hi Everybody,

I am very excited to share with you my most recent LBP2 masterpiece "GAUNTLET: 1-4 Player ADVENTURE"!!! This is another one of my "tribute" levels, but unlike the other levels in this category (for instance, my "Peggle" trilogy), this level is not an exact replica of the original series, but rather a reimagining designed specifically for LittleBigPlanet! As in the "Gauntlet" games, there are four playable characters to choose from (Wizard, Warrior, Valkyrie, and Archer), each with thier own unique weapons and abilities. The goal is make it to the end of the adventure alive while fighting off hordes of enemies and collecting gold and treasure. There are also three hidden birds to be found throughout the level, and a secret passage (both of which unlock additional rewards). I really hope you enjoy this level and look forward to hearing your feedback!

I loved the title and character selection screen as it looks really cool. I could not finish this level and had already restarted one time and the last time, just was too tired to restart again. Here's what happened. I chose the Archer character and immediately my sackboy landed in the environment. Not my archer, but my sackboy. I fell into the arena and thought I'd explore it a little bit and then fell to the bare floor below. I reloaded and again chose the archer to see if it would work this time. Success! I moved my archer about and began testing out my abilities. Arrows flow nicely, I like the super attack "O" button but felt that instead of them coming out at an angle like that, they or even just one, should come out straight ahead. Forging ahead I found one key and unlocked a chest and was greeted with a wealth of cash. Woo Hoo! I moved further along and after defeating an onslaught of enemies I moved around and saw another key, or either defeated something and he dropped the key, I don't rightly recall but I got another key. There was a chest nearby so I opened it and got more cash. I moved along and came to a gate that said to use a key to open the gate. O_O but I used my keys on treasure boxes. I searched and searched but never did find another key. I even fired a barrage of arrows at the lock and super arrows but nothing opened it. Without a key to carry on, I had to quit.
I did like the way the area looked, very good looking top down environment. The characters looked good too. A lot of times you'll see top down characters that just look like crap, but you did a good job on these.

Thank you for the feedback, biorogue! Lol I think it's actually my fault that you had that first problem (character being a sack person instead of a Gauntlet character). When I was in my pod last night I noticed someone was just entering my Gauntlet level and I thought it would be fun to join them (I believe it may have been you). Anyway I clicked "join" but when I entered the level I had the same experience (sackboy instead of selected character), and the level was basically unplayable. Apparently the multiplayer only works properly if all characters enter together, otherwise the level collapses (makes sense). Naturally I shrieked and turned off my PS3 haha.

Next I wanted to mention that I feel the same way about the Archer's turbo attack. I agree that the giant arrows should fire directly straight rather than at 30 degree angles, but I wanted to keep the level as true to the source material as possible, as this is how the Archer's turbo appears in Gauntlet Legends for Nintendo 64. I'm still torn on that decision lol.

Finally, the gold keys. I can completely understand how frustrating it can be to get stuck in someone's level to the point where quitting seems to be the only option and I'm very sorry that this happened to you. There are three keys to be found before the first locked gate, and I feel that one of them may have been overlooked. The first is hidden in a barrel next to a tree at the very beginning of the level (I suspect that if any of them were missed, it was most likely this one). The second is lying on the ground next to a chest, and the third is hidden in a barrel to the left of the locked gate.

Once again I really appreciate you taking the time to leave such detailed feedback and your interest in my level! :-) :-) :-)

The Hero selection was well designed. The heroes were cool and the level atmosphere was ok.
BUT
I chose this ranger guy and it was really hard to aim unfortunately. may be you can improve the control. it would be much easyer and better then

ahh, the barrel at the beginning. Now normally, I'll backtrack and search all around and I'm sure I would have eventually found this, but when I tried to go back across the bridge, my archer was blocked. Something was there that his feet couldn't get over and I just kept bumping it. Anyway, I shall try again and will be sure to grab that first confounded key. Thanks!2013-02-05 16:59:00

Oh god, I played Gauntlet years ago and I hated every bit of it. I have to hate your level too! Queud.

Edit: I played it in multi and it was pretty cool. If I had one complaint, it would be that camera is focused on the first player, so when others fool around, the 5-seconds counter reminds us to gather again. Well... now that I write it, it sounds totally logical... After all, in a crowd of monster, you'd better not split your party!
Great game, we didn't go till the end (is there an end?), so i'll probably retry it later!

Thanks everybody for all the support and great feedback! I wanted to take a moment to mention that I've made some fresh updates to this level based on suggestions from the community!!!

First, I took biorogue's advice on several topics. I went ahead and adjusted the Archer's Turbo attack so the giant arrows fly much more straight, because I agree that it was a bit of a nuisance before. Hahaha it was like "I'm super excited to unleash this massive Turbo attack and destroy this mob of enemies in front of me" and then "........oh, lame". Then I removed the invisible wall that blocks the player from going back across the bridge again once they've crossed it. The reason it was there was to close off and destroy areas of the level once the player has passed through them so the graphics and stability of the upcoming parts of the level are more reliable, but biorogue was absolutely right by raising the question "what if someone needs to go back to one of those areas because they missed something vital to completing the level (like a key)?". Thanks for the heads up on that!

Next I listened to yenahc1962 and added the option for the player to use R1 to attack in addition to X, because lots of players would feel more comfortable and have an easier time aiming and shooting with R1 than X. Additionally, I have been getting lots of requests to add an automatic firing option, but I am having a hard time with that decision because the Gauntlet games have always been all about the button-mashing and I feel autofire would make it far too easy and possibly unenjoyable. But I'm keeping it in mind!

I've also added lots of subtitles to the level to help the player feel like they can truly pick up the controller and have a great experience without having to ask "wait.....what am I supposed to do here?". All in all, I couldn't thank the community enough for making such terrific suggestions and bringing these things to my attention, and ultimately helping me to make this level the best it can be!!! :-)

I saw this was a Gauntlet level, loved it. Saw it had the first Gauntlet's characters also loved it. Then I saw the gameplay and environment/enemies are more based off of Gauntlet Legends/Dark Legacy?! Oh you've done what I was too lazy to do long ago. Nice.2013-02-21 03:58:00
