Long Road Home series

My second set of maps, I'd say they're far better than my first set(unpublished on LBPcentral).

-PERILOUS PEAK: "Stranded on a mountain range after a plane crash, you must make your way downhill to the snowfields and eventually to civilisation." Location: Himalayas

The level starts off in a doomed jetliner. After a few seconds of flight, the engine breaks off and the jet plunges to earth. Luckily for you, you survive the crash. From there on, you must head through a large cavern before you can get on the slopes and head for the nowfields. Once you're through, wait a few seconds at the checkpoint, and a toboggan will appear for you. Once you get rolling, I'd recommed you mash X as much as you can... The ensuing downhill chase is fast-paced to say the least. Once it's over, I gaurantee you you'll be too pumped to rest for a while, heh.

-SAVAGE SKIES: "Pilot your jet to victory, battle a giant zeppelin, and continue on your journey home!" Location: Southeast Asia

This one starts at the foot of the slope from Perilous Peak. Walk forward a few steps and wait for the checkpoint to come down and activate it. If you don't, then the level may not work as intended. In the early segment of snowdrifts and snowmobiles, you will spot four numbered signs. These activate commentary locations, which basically provide a little insight into the level's design, or gameplay tips to make the jet sequence easier or, if you're insanely skilled, harder. You'll need to find the stickers first. Don't fret, they're hidden in the area before the jet sequence. Once enter the hangar, you'll be given flight directions. I highly recommend you read these, otherwise you'll go down quite fast. After that, you could hop right into the jet and take off... Or, if you want the prizes in the attic, poke around in the Sticker menu... You just might find something interesting about that little jet of yours. When you take off, you'll first encounter a wave of missiles. Very few of these pose a threat, they serve mostly as impromptu firing practice. As soon as the missiles are over, the difficulty level goes up, and you battle helicopters. They're fairly easty to down. After the copters, you see something in the distance... It is the Zeppelin. Just a few seconds later, you get the "privilege" of seeing it up close. It doesn't matter how many parts of it you destroy, what's important is hitting that last critical area towards the center. If you can't find a weak spot, look for the patched-up areas of fabric. Once the zeppelin is downed, your jet runs out of fuel and you fall. Once the gas wipes you out, you'll respawn in a wasteland of shattered hulls and firey debris. Take note that you respawn here if you get shot down anywhere along the jet part; That's right, you only get one try to take down the Zepp. After dodging a small amount of flaming wreckage, still falling from the sky, you encounter a convoy truck. If you've defeated the Zepp, it's recommended you go forward a little bit on foot to collect your prize for downing the beast. Take note of its flaming hull in the background; This will still be here if you were shot down, in that case assume a different pilot downed it. Once you collect your prize, proceed forward in the truck for a bit. This segment is mostly just a transition from one setting to another. Once you're on the highway, the level ends and you can collect various prizes for beating the level or collecting all items.

-RUINOUS ROCKS: "I could use some help here. Anyone willing to co-create?"

-TREMORIC TUNNELS: "I haven't made this yet!"

-PYROCLASTIC PRISON: "I haven't made this yet!"

-BATTLE AT THE CENTER OF THE EARTH: "Just an idea right now."

-EPILOGUE: "Just an idea right now."

These levels show a lot of potential. The short length is a plus and minus... I understand that it lets you explore more story by having different levels with different settings, but I felt like I was just getting going. I was really impressed by the opening Jet crash. I've seen similar bits, but you did a really nice job of designing the jet and finally of having it clip the mountain and crash. The length of this opening was just right as well. Unfortunately the speech bubble doesn't stay up long enough to hear the pilot.

The game play in the cavern was very good, but pretty short. The shape of things like the rocks was very good. Every time that slippery edge on the first jump would get me.

The toboggan didn't appear consistently, which first had me not knowing it was there and second had me jumping around trying to make it appear. Even when it did appear it would sometimes flip and crush me. You might need to explain it a little more.

On the second level I liked the idea of the commentary. The dissolve material was distracting... I would recommend hooking the sticker switch directly to the magic mouth. Also, I got stuck after sticker 3. The snowmobile looked good too.

The fighter jet looked cool, but I couldn't get it to work. I could never get into the cockpit (always closed on me) and could never get it to take off. The description you offered above sounds very cool, but I didn't get to see any of it.

The feel and look of the levels was very good. Please take a look at improving the toboggan and fighter jet and post here again. I'd hate for your hard work to not be appreciated.

F4F: Monochrome (https://lbpcentral.lbp-hub.com/index.php?t=t=7732) by larryjoe701. The level is quite difficult, but follow the arrows and be patient with the puzzles.

Well, the jet has a habit of doing that. I turned down the tightness on the bolt to make exit possible, but since it closes from the back, the best way to enter is the front. I'm thinking of taking ut the eject function, considering there isn't much need for it. As for the toboggan, it took forever tweaking it just so it wouldn't flip all the time and kill the player. Still, I think the emitter settings could benefit from some experimentation, so I'll see how it works out. Thanks for the review though! I'm glad that at the least I got the story and such through. The first level, by the way, was only so short since I ran out of map space. Turns out the cinematic took up a lot of horizontal space, heh. By the way, I plan on making Ruinous Rocks more platform-oriented than vehicle-based. Hopefully it'll be a nice change of pace. I'm also considering lengthening the series by a few levels... Since you mentioned you felt like you were just getting started.2009-01-23 06:06:00

UPDATED:
-PERILOUS PEAK
--Magic mouth trigger radius increased
--Snowball speed decreased
--Toboggan redesigned
-SAVAGE SKIES
--Bolt tightness on cockpit increased; Shouldn't slam shut before player is inside
--Jet actually takes off- Stabilizer rod was too long.
--Tip dissolve material removed, switch attached directly to mouths instead
--Minor alterations with missiles; They now spawn on the same layer as the enemies so that they actually hit.

Ok, I went ahead and played these.

Perilous peaks:

PROS:

I enjoyed the plane crash.

Collapsing of the rock was cool, enjoyed the platforming elements

CONS:

Plane flight - I felt there is an opportunity to add to the background to give the feeling of flight. The only time you see anything is when you hit the mountain. I would love to see clouds, mountains fly by

I think for first time players the collapsing rock was kind of cheap. There should at least be clues, such as a warning sign and a visible crack in the rock. My feeling is the player should always feel like their death was at least fair. They should say to themselves "I should have seen that coming".

Level design kind of bland. There's very little mixture of material. Could use a little sprucing up on the ground.

Savage skies:

PROS:

Shooting down other aircraft was fun!

The sled ride was really cool

CONS:

I didn't really notice the sled until I died a few times. Maybe change the color so it stands out?

Once again, some material changes to spruce up the ground would be nice.

All-in-all these levels were fun.

Ideas going through my mind:

-Very nice, start, I like how the car(?) runs smoothly and doesn't get stuck, nice airplane design as well.

-Woah... Where the hell am I? I died and entered some weird place, lol.

-Nice building design, has a great "everything is destroyed" atmosphere, going on.

-Oh, This is where you go when you die... I see...

The Positive

-This is a really fun arcade type game, I've played it five times already, and that's not because I'm reviewing the level...

-I love the effect of the helicopters propeller(?) It actually does look like it's spinning really fast.

Suggestions/Feedback

-The plane, and everything else seems a bit plain, you should sticker them up, because they're all the same color and look pretty ugly.

-Umm, that blimp thing? Everytime I go near it I die, I have no idea what to do or what's even going on. Maybe a text bubble or something would help out.

-Speaking of text bubbles, add one at the end of the level, when you die and you go to the ending, were everything is burning. Maybe something like "Better luck next time" So people have an idea that this is an arcade type level.

-Lol, speaking of the end of the level! Huge problem found, at the start, if you don't, activate the checkpoint, and die, you won't spawn in the other spot, you spawn at the starting checkpoint, which is where the car is suppose to be, and it isn't, and the plane isn't there either. Big problem if you ask me.

-The backround, is a little bland, maybe because I didn't go that far? But it seemed to me it's always black, maybe adding some dark clouds? Maybe if your good with lighting, add some lightning? Add some atmosphere to the flight.

-I don't really understand the point system, but maybe if you were to add a brain on the enemies, it would allow people to get points for killing them.

Overall

The level has huge potential, with a few tweaks, here and there, it can be a really fun mini-game (Is it even a mini game!? I could never get past the helicopters, I kept dying, by some magical explosion...) But anyways, it's fun, and it can definately be better. I gave it a 4 star, no heart yet, but that can change, with a few changes. Good level!
