easiest way is to use a player sensor wired to a piston set to "forward/backward".
if it's moving the wrong way you can invert the output of the player sensor in it's tweak settings, or reverse the piston in it's tweak settings

let me re ask this question i didnt the first time sorry but i am trying to make something pop up from behind a object when players is near and the this object pops back down (hides) when the players leaves ..........any ideas plz 2013-01-29 15:57:00

Evret has told you how to do this.
Whether the object is behind another object or not is irrelevant.

yes but when i hooked up a piston to a sensor i do not see a choice for having both a up/down to chose eithier u can only have up or down not both?2013-01-29 17:15:00

on the piston set it to forward/backward, and if it pops out when you arnt near then on the piston set it to reversed2013-01-29 20:25:00
