Torn By Darkness

This is poetic platforming at it's finest. You guys know from my work that I'm a fan of deep thought and verse, and this level is a great metaphor for the eternal confinement of death and the despair of endless solitude.

The platforming is excellent and he has some extremely nice mechanics in it. The use of dark, light, and sound coordination to intertwine with the gameplay AND the dialogue is genius. The use of sound almost makes you feel like you're in an abstract version of Silent Hill 2.

Anybody with half a brain for literature, and with good platforming skills should try this level.

Me and my bro are split on this, I thought it was interesting and pretty cool. He downright hated it.

We both agreed the seizure bit with all the flashing lights was annoying as hell though.

Very unique and original. Artistic... Unlike anything I've seen before. Give it a shot!2009-01-21 00:10:00

Yeah definitely a work of art. He really nailed it here. Some really interesting mechanics and the lighting was un-freaking-real. I do have an extremely big headache now though, I'm not good with bright lights flickering on and off.2009-01-21 00:48:00

It is worth a play just to see the seizure part. It really is crazy to see how many lights are flickering on and off to burn a hole in your retina.2009-01-21 01:19:00

I really liked this level too. I'm on the record as saying that I'd prefer it without any of the text. The level's good enough and interpretive enough to work without it, and the cartoonishness of the dialogue bubbles and their little "boing!" sounds are amazingly out of place with the tone of this level.

But then again, so's a floppy, zipped-up sackboy with a goofy grin on his face.

This level has a great flow to it. My favorite element is in how unpredictable it is, and how it tends to "lead" you through the stage intuitively. With lighting cues that are sometimes obvious, sometimes menacing, other times downright untrustworthy, and eventually absolutely violent.

There are areas where you travel through absolute blackness. It feels unsettling and wrong, but you do it anyway, and it's always the "right" way to go.

Great use of light and sound, and a high level of polish. this level was clearly very well-tested before the first outside play ever came in.

Alot like silent film, eh... ba dump bump ching

I initially felt that way about text bubbles in general, when it came to darker, more pensive levels... cartoonish was actually the exact same word I used when told to use more dialogue. I got over it, though and started to take them more for what they're worth. Especially when it comes to delivering dialogue and prose.

Even with the use of sound, I don't really think the metaphor would have been conveyed without the words. The dialogue was definitely my favorite aspect - the darkness and light show stuff is done better in levels like Illumina Garden 2, and the sound use in Improvisation #1... but in conjunction with the writing here it excells in a different and more powerful way. It wouldn't even seem to be a metaphor at all IMO, and just seem abstract and open for interpretation. I wouldn't mind reading the words as is, and see if they have anywhere near the emotional power and imagery without the game as a spiritual medium.

The hand part was ridiculous... insanity clawing at the fabric of sanity.

All these comments have grabbed my attention. I will check this out soon.

*EDIT*

Well that was impressive, probably the best use of light and dark I have seen in LBP. As a poet myself I really appreciated the writing which was top-notch throughout. The use of piano was just the icing on the cake. I gave this a well deserved 5 stars and a heart.
