The Gravity Suit

Archive: 5 posts

*sigh*
I might as well stick probably my greatest work into here.

The Gravity Suit is a level that's a mix of both Portal and VVVVV. It borrows the main gameplay element from VVVVV in that you can switch your own gravity. It is a large group of puzzles (like Portal), and they are all based around the gameplay mechanic. Music is done by Cortster12, and a friend of mine named Catvsb3ar2, and he is pretty decent at it.

Sadly, I cannot access any pictures, for there isn't any. I'm guaranteed you'll love it.

You said VVVVVV and Portal, I must try!

Edit: That's definitively a good level! You must have a good timing for certain segments... I'm just a bit worried that, when activated, the gravity suit sometimes put you on the 2nd or 3rd plane: many times you run in the foreground, and suddenly your momentum sends you flying in an electrified wall in the background. Nothing that can stop you finishing the level, but a bit annoying anyway.
Great work overall!

Alright, I've included pictures... Yay.

Hopefully that will attract a little more attention.

EDIT: Also Djibees. I would fix it, it's just that the thermometer is exploded. There are plenty of things that I feel could be improved, that for one.

Sorry to be a bit late with this, but here are my thoughts.

The mechanic itself is a cool idea and you used it in some neat ways. I especially liked extending jumps using quick shifts in gravity that required some extra timing.

That being said, here's where I thought it could be improved.

The backgrounds were large which, while good in terms of spacing form the gravity play, also left with with wide open spaces of blank wall. It gave a somewhat monotonous look to the level, even if some parts and objects are decorated well.

Additionally, there were some aspects that felt more like padding than an expansion of the level.

For instance, during round 13, (the one with the piston that drops down), I didn't even use the gravity tweak to pass.
The maze, while a good idea in concept, didn't seem to require the change in visual design with the x-ray material. It felt very random and out of place with the rest of the level.
I also had mixed feelings on the final level. While on the one hand, it isn't a bad idea for the finale to combine multiple aspects of earlier rounds, but in this case, it felt too much like a rehash than a legitimately new and challenging experience.
Finally, there is the elevator. This felt out of place in a similar way as the flat material at the maze. It's not that it came out bad, but it definitely felt unnecessary because the player is already using a suit which makes him or her rise to a new area for play. This more than anything really seemed to break into the gameplay.

Basically, I think this level definitely has some good ideas and you succeeded at some parts, but could improve at others. There is a fun mechanic and some good looking objects, but some improvements can be made in the overall design.

I certainly enjoyed checking it out a couple of times, and was in the running for a higher score for a bit . I'm looking foward to possibly playing more in the future.
