BFAPRP: Big Fat Ambitious Pokemon Remake Project- Help Wanted!

Archive: 11 posts

Hello! I'm looking for help on a level I've been working on and off for over a year and a half now. It's taken a lot of effort and it's now pretty ambitious, definitely one of the most ambitious in LBP. What level is it?
http://upload.wikimedia.org/wikipedia/en/4/4c/Pok%C3%A9mon_box_art_-_Gold_Version.png
I thought I would have seen this done on LBP earlier, but since it didn't show up, I decided to make a Pokemon Game myself, based in the Johto region of Pokemon Gold and Silver, but with an independent story. You might have seen similar concepts on LBP2 with underwhelming results, but don't write me off yet! Take a look at some features (screens are of a work in progress and have very basic graphics):

http://www.lbpcentral.com/forums/attachment.php?attachmentid=43939&d=1358947347

You own sackboy starts here in his/her bedroom. You can move around with L3 or in 4 axes using the dpad. You can interact with the world, pressing X on that black block for example to examine it. Walk up to the exit and press O to exit the building or in this case, go down a floor.

http://ic.lbp.me/img/ft/69c2c440f7d02dbcf5fe732f6cd7f94853b5c37b.jpg

Here you can see a 'X' indicator telling you how to go up a floor (and enter buildings). You can also see your Mom in the lower left, one of the many NPCs you can talk to and accept tasks from. What they say and do can change depending on your
progress.

Now we're outside and see the starting city, New Bark Town, with more NPCs to talk to. Keep in mind traversing through different towns and buildings is already fully functional and occurs seamlessly without loading. Next we move into a route full of wild Pokemon, leading inevitably to Pokemon Battles!
You may have already seen this from JAYHAWK_ER's awesome level:

http://ib.lbp.me/img/ft/0cb61a7e8bfc42552b8304ae9720a9519807df75.jpg

His level started with this single fight and ended when you won. It had just one Pokemon to fight and another to fight with, with just a few moves programmed.
Here's what my version currently looks like:

http://ib.lbp.me/img/ft/06b844137ffe3d383572a0c1d8c675aa06670366.jpg

In my level, you can play, win, lose, and run from an infinite number of Pokemon battles after walking into tall grass on the overworld. You may fight a variety of different Pokemon using many different moves spanning every elemental type. You'll want to use Thunderbolt on the Water-type Pokemon Totodile!
When you aren't battling, you can open your menu and select which Pokemon so start battles with etc. Did I mention you can catch new Pokemon, too?

http://i5.lbp.me/img/ft/355e795971df7f5d9eb460f372410517434207b4.jpg

This is the prototype PC menu. Here you can access all the Pokemon you currently have caught, visible at the top, and choose which to put in your party in any order you choose. The hidden panels at the top indicate Pokemon you have not yet captured.

This is CherryGrove City, where you can see more NPCs and the story gets more interesting.

http://i2.lbp.me/img/ft/dd2ded9b774c7e51a4b8c759feb8992a9badaf61.jpg

Here is one of the many Pokemon Centres where you can heal your injured Pokemon and access the PC.

http://i5.lbp.me/img/ft/0a50ff185772f7e7a3d19d6e9bfa06a6367b9022.jpg

Now we're in Violet city, about to enter the Sprout Tower.

Talk to the guy in red to initiate a Trainer battle where you fight multiple Pokemon consecutively.
Finally, can you guess what the last screenshot is?

I've made a lot of the level, but there's still lots to do and I am worried that LBP could be a lot quieter by the time it's ready . I really want to see this level published, and that's why I'm looking for help

Here of some jobs I would currently love some help with:

Logic input for various Pokemon

Each Pokemon is similar under the hood, but there are variations when it comes to attack damage, elemental resistances and miss rates. This job doesn't require any logic expertise, I just need someone who doesn't hate the sight of circuitboards and tweak menus. The majority of what you would be doing is changing the percentage values on batteries.

Objects

You can tell by screens that my level currently looks a little bare. I'd like someone to make small objects like trees, bookcases, PCs, statues and the like.

Attack effects

http://ic.lbp.me/img/ft/13c3982caea6cb2f4790a3545ce0a73f56be1205.jpg
Look, it's Flamethrower! I'm looking for someone to make simple effects for other moves like Waterfall and Earthquake.

And these are some jobs which are less fundamental but will make the level more awesome!

Music

Are you good with music. I'm looking for some tracks for use in towns, routes, buildings and battles, which would replace my current placeholder ones. (I've already got some pretty good music for the battle theme and Pokecentre, but if you made a cool tune I'd happily replace them). I'm not really looking for remakes of official tracks form Pokemon games, and I don't want techno/ 8-bit style songs. Looping songs that are natural/ orchestral/ catchy songs would be excellent!

Back illustrations for various Pokemon

I currently have a friend of mine who has made some rather excellent 'sprites' of various Pokemon (http://lbp2.me/v/7ejysz), and have used them in my level for wild Pokemon. For wild Pokemon he hasn't made in LBP, i use a webcam to take snaps of images from the internet, which works quite well. However, for back sprites (used for your own Pokemon), the only ones I can find all look like this
http://cdn.bulbagarden.net/upload/5/54/Spr_b_5b_004.png
These are very low res and look pixelly when used in my level. Therefore I would appreciate any contribution of your own. Back sprites are in highest demand but front sprites would be cool too. I don't mind whether use the sticker creator or make an image out of material (then use the in-game screen capture tool), but try to keep it the same quality as those seen in the LBP.me link above, or in your own funky style if you want.

Please let me know if you want to get involved!

I'd just like to make the suggestion that if it's a remake of Gold, only use the Pokemon from that game?

http://bulbapedia.bulbagarden.net/wiki/Main_Page is the Wikipedia of Pokemon. Pokemon Gold is Generation II, and you can find all sorts of info to make the level more accurate

It won't be an actual remake as such, but I thought Johto would be an interesting region to go with and would invoke nostalgia in fans. However, I don't want to be limited in the ways a remake would require me to be. For instance, I've made it so route 1 (technically 29) has more interesting Pokemon than the original, and so on. I wouldn't want to make a Pokemon game without Pikachu and Charmander!
I will also make an original storyline.

Ok, I have found the new project I'm following haha, Anyway, I'm a train creator, and I love all of the pokemon games (Also, if you're going to include Growlithe in this remake, I will forever love you ). I'm even planning on creating all of the Battle Subway cars from Black & White. If you want, I'll happily design you the Magnet train that runs from Goldenrod to Saffron, that is, if you would want help for it.
Here are some pics of the trains from Heart Gold & the original Gold:

Just PM me if you would like me to design these for you, and whether or not you would like to design the movement system (should you say yes to my offer).

I shall add Growlithe just for you! As for the trains, I'm not sure since I hadn't planned to incorporate Kanto, let alone part of Johto (at least at the time of publishing). However, I'd still love to have your help, so I'll add you and we'll sort something out

Awesome! I'll be on the PS3 next Tuesday, so I'll see you then!
EDIT: Also, if you want any help with the towns, I'm into town designing myself! (Not in LBP, but with the actual game stuff) Here are some things I've done:
Deppo Town (Depot Town)

The towns look cool. I use sprite sheets from the internet to recreate the towns so that's taken care of, but you could design the building exteriors if you're up to it.2013-01-27 00:10:00

Yea haha I won't be on until Monday anyway, so it doesn't really matter But yea, I'm totally down for helping you! Check out some of my stuff while I'm not online, that way you can get to know my building style before I join, so that it's easier for us to communicate about creatin'. And yes, I fully support self-promotion! 8)
P.S.: Gold and Silver take place in Johto -_-
