Stickers - why I think they suck and what needs changing

Archive: 16 posts

I like a lot of things about LBP but stickers are not one of them. Maybe it's because I'm new to using them and I'm not familiar with the nuances/workarounds (but why should I need a work around to paint a straight line or a triangle?)

Standard Shapes

Why aren't we given the same standard shapes available from the materials menu? This would solve a lot of my problems right here.

Click and drag

Again, I can click and drag to make 3D objects, same with click and delete to take chunks out of my objects. Why not sticker patterns?

Deleting stickers

Is there an option to delete all stickers from an object?

Sticking to the wrong object - making a stencil

I can create far better shapes by building an object. Why can't I make a stencil out of a thin piece of cardboard, cut away a star shaped hole, place it over another object and use a sticker to leave the outline of the star I just made?

Those are my complaints so far with using stickers. Does anyone else have suggestions/improvements for stickers? What are your current workarounds for using stickers?

I agree, I only use them to change the colour of a material or to 'spruce up' an object. The thing that bugs me with stickers and decorations is the edit tool. This tool lets you select a sticker/decoration but to delete it you have to come out of the tool, why not just push triangle like everything else? This is annoying because if you want to delete more than 1 sticker you have to keep opening and closing the edit tool. 2009-01-20 20:07:00

hmm i see what you are saying here but i dont think it is a reason to take away stickers.
it helps to make levels nicer if you take the time and put them in perfect places

He never said he wanted to take away stickers. He says he wants change, and I must agree. I also want a Paint Tool...2009-01-20 22:14:00

Exactly, I want to keep the stickers - just adopt the same features I have when creating an object. Imagine if you clicked on a blue square sticker but you could click and drag it to create a seamless line, and then pick a triangle and cut parts out of the top and bottom of your blue line to create a zig-zag effect.

How does everyone currently get around the sticker limitations? (like drawing a straight line or creating a triangle)

the first three need to be implemented but the last one seems not necessary.2009-01-20 23:35:00

I use a stencil like technique, I build the basic shape out of the material I want, then embed the details in different materials - that way I can sticker everything without "going outside the lines" - Finally I turn everything into the material I started with

It's far from ideal, but its the easiest way to get a details with stickers

(oh and if im pushed for thermo, i do all of the above - then take a photo of it, then put THAT sticker on the finished product)

One way to make a straight line (kind of) is to turn on grid mode while stickering. Although stickers don't strickly follow grid very well, it can help provide some sort of visual aid while you work.

The suggestions you have made in the first post are really good though. I would love to see all of them implemented in the future. It would make customisation of objects a whole lot easier.

You can use triangle to delete stickers. MM should of really told people about this in a tutorial or something, because alot of people think you have to keep pressing X and O. I thought you had to do that too, for quite a long time.

Hi,

Standard Shapes

I used to make my own. I used large element of the desired sticker, take it in photo and used the photo as a sticker. Very usefull.

Click and drag

I think if they have done the same click possibilities to the stickers is that it wouldd be very difficult to construt/unconstruct complex objects with differents stickers (stickers are not layer element, you can superpose them on the same thin surface).

Deleting all stickers and Sticking to the wrong object - making a stencil

I think that this would be a very great improvements!

I wish they had more color stickers. I think there's like 7 or 8.2009-01-23 09:31:00

You can mix the single colour ones, like red and white overlayed will produce a pink colour. But it's not like you have a full spectrum palette... well, at least not an easily accessible one.

yes i agree.... the color palette is very restricted......... and there are lots of problems when we use them... it's not easy to apply stickers in angles or in planes that aren't faced to the camera.... it's easy to paint an entire object but imagine that you need to paint an specific face of a geometric solid ???2009-01-23 11:49:00
