Someone robs you of your most precious game-related item. What is it?

Archive: 13 posts

Imagine the worst case scenario. Maybe it's an entire library of games ripped from your home and/or bag, maybe it's your online profile, maybe it's a keychain or a figurine that you feel naked without. Whatever your most prized game-related item, someone got to it and stole it. Not lost, stolen.

(For the purposes of this conversation you cannot get it back, or confront the person who took it.)

What is it for you, and why is it so devastating? Besides the obvious feeling of violation.

For me: I would be crushed to lose my PS3 account to identity theft. It's got almost no value compared to my physical games collection, nor is it my most robust profile, but over time I've gotten meticulous about it in a way that, to lose CONTROL of it would be more damaging to my hobby than anything else. I don't even know why. I could handle my Xbox account. I can handle hacked email. I can get over coming home to a jimmied door and finding all my belongings stolen, all consoles and software and everything. But losing access to my actual PS3 account would end the hobby, right there. It's almost an obsessive-compulsive fear. I would not recover!

Consoles are pretty cheap now, cables and controllers are easily replaceable. Even if they stole my whole games collection I'd only miss the classics that I like to replay now and then. I'm not a fan of collector items. I haven't downloaded much content and I don't give a **** about trophies, so I probably would handle account theft pretty well. I'd be screwed if they took my laptop, but because it contains all my study material; the problem wouldn't be videogame related (although I'd miss playing Minecraft as well).

So I'd probably be bummed out the most if my TV was stolen. It's the most expensive item I have and without it I can't play any games at all.

My computer (It can run games, so it's game-related). Since I basically use it 24/7....

I think it's really unhealthy, actually

I think in this era nobody can afford to go even a day without computer access of some sort. It's very much the center of our lives. It has too much functionality. My dad said in 1999 or so that people need to get off computers and that addiction is noticeable. That was one of the first times I really recognized a gap in our generations. He didn't "get it" yet, because his business did not depend on being online, writing or using software, etc. Then that inevitably happened, and by 2005 he was on a computer more than I am -- and I am never not on it. We both make our livings 100% from digital labor so it goes beyond addiction and into dependency. Every minute you are NOT on the computer, there's a sense of throwing money away. Of the two extremes it's far better for a person's outlook to spend 24 hours a day on a computer than to risk the profound loss of communication, income and social access of having no computer. Not that either of those is "healthy", heh heh.

I'm not attached to my computer, but I definitely need it. If someone steals it, it's like someone stole a hammer. I get a new hammer from any number of shops and get back to work. If I started gaming on it it would be such a distraction that having it stolen is probably one of the best things that could happen.

I'd be really gutted if I lost my account and all the saved data and trophies I've collected on it. I've got a lot of games on my download list too so there's a fair bit of value attached to it in that respect. Hardware and games can be replaced easily enough and I always make sure I'm in a position where I can do that.

Losing the account and everything related to it would be a heavy blow.. but it wouldn't break the hobby for me. Too many good friends withPS3s I enjoy playing games with.

Probably my LBP2. The level that I'm working on is really detailed and has taken me about a week to make so far.

Mind you, my LBP2 is almost never out of my PS3, so they'd have to take my PS3 too.

This is why you have back up data. Even so I think you could buy another copy of the game and still have your data. But im not too sure so just make sure you have a back up file. That and if you are a PS+ member you can have save data over the cloud so you can still have your data if they steal your ps3.

Anyway I think limited editions would be the worst for me if someone steals it. It's hard to find one once they don't sell it anymore. It's rare to find one that hasn't been used and still in the box. If you do find one then it will be expensive.

Probably the PS3, considering all the money I've wasted on it buying miniature clothes for a sack made of fluff.2013-01-21 18:40:00

My Vita, just because I won it on a Stacker machine. I EARNED that thing, and money just can't replace that awesome feeling of accomplishment.2013-01-22 23:06:00

No one is going to say fancy things?

I would be completely, completely, completely angry if someone stole my Yukari Yakumo plush. It took me lots of time to get it (had to order it to China) and I really like it. I can buy another PS3, I can (and should) buy another PC, but getting another plush it's quite hard.

Probably my SNES, it's my longest held possession ever, life wouldn't be the same without it. I dread the day it finally kicks the bucket D:2013-01-22 23:16:00
