Renegade assault (Top -Down-Shooter) beta

Archive: 36 posts

Ok, so I've come over to the vita, but have continued with making top down shooters
http://vita.lbp.me/v/-tegs
This has kinda two types of game play: you start as a foot soldier, with a basic upgradable lazer rifle, and collectables rockets. Once you have found the keys to the heli, the game switches to a helicopter shooter. You can land the heli on heli pads and explore on foot, and re enter the heli at any heli pad.

Ive spent quite a number of weeks on this, but still have loads of thermo to play with with, so am really looking for ideas to improve/change the game.
I've had crytisisms about the way the camera moves with the right stick (I did this so you could see more of the playing area) does anyone else dislike this?
How do you find the controls in general?
All thoughts much appreciated, and am happy to return any f4f that is more than a couple of lines

Sorry about pics, I can't get them to publish properly using this **** iPhone... Really need to get my computer fixed!

Hey there, played this a little bit early today. Will play again to get a better impression.

But I will leave down one remake here for now...
The camera. It is disorienting. It makes me not want to play your level. It's so jerky, and makes it hard to tell exactly where I'm about to shoot.
Maybe if you just pull the camera out further so you can see more around you you'd be able to get rid of your current camera system?

Hi there !
That was pretty cool ! The logic and the mechanics are well used, and the design/special effects are great ! I wasn't personally disoriented by the camera. There is lots of content too ! Hope the full version will be as good as your Mm picked LBP2's level.

Thanks guys.... So do I or don't I change the camera?? I personnel you like it to be able to see a bit more of the surrounding area? Perhaps have an options page that turns the camera on or off?
Going to add a hidden power up for the heli, perhaps even two?
Also going to award points at the end for stars collected, prizes collected and data cards? Thoughts?
Will do a better title start screen.... What do you think of the name? (rough teas Idea btw)
Any other ideas guys?
I'm in no rush to finish this, so all ideas considered

There's a lot of things to like about this level. I thought that the camera worked well. The game play was fun - I wasn't sure if there was an ultimate goal, but I might not have gotten very far. The enemies looked sharp and had good movement and AI. I thought that the explosions were awesome! I thought taking on two tanks on the bridge was too difficult without the heli. And each time you die, its difficult to find more rockets. But overall its really well done.2013-01-20 23:19:00

Hey steakmo, thanks for playing! So that's one more that hasn't a problem with the camera as for the tanks on the bridge, thanks, I need to addd to the speech when the bridge goes.... The idea is to just run past, and get the heli port open ( where you find the end boss type ship that you have to destroy to complete the game) once you get the bridge door open, it's memorised, so you can start from there when you replay... still in beta stage, (and thanks to everyone that's played ) everyones pointed out the odd small thing, and though I haven't had time to sort them out the last couple of days, I will get them all done, and much more, and will keep you posted 2013-01-21 09:59:00

just finished your level. best top down level I've played on the vita! I love the menu/intro screen and ending one as well. the level played really well, Its actually the second level I downloaded to play anytime.
On to the level itself. I didnt really mind the camera, it made it so you could see a little bit farther, but didnt really make that big of a difference. I would probably leave it if I was you, since its kinda cool to look around.
the gun was a little weird, i dunno it reminded me of a space shooter game control, i like how you aim with the right stick but i was expecting to press a button to shoot, like the r button or something, then you could rapid fire the lazer if you can press it fast enough. the rockets were done nicely, but i alwasy ran out and they do soo much more damage than the lazer that once you were out it felt liike a chore of running to find more rockets, maybe make the laser do more damage or something.
the only other thing i didnt really like was the music, it was alright but if it had some sweet music this level would be amazing.
loved the helicopter gameplay, the explosions where epic. the menus, and the schenery were also nicley done.
did you use the layer glitch trick to make the level?
either way awesome job and I hope to see more.

Thanks for that mate some nice suggestions there!
Though i see your point about the lazer gun the soldier uses, I tried doing the one shot idea, and it just made it way too easy... Wanted the foot soldier part to be a bit more reserved and less just mashing the button (hence why I did the cover system)

I totally agree about the music, I really hate writi g music but will get around to sorting that!

Yeah, I used the 3d layer tools, but no too much , used the twenty thin layers glitch far more.

Thanks for your positive feed back, really glad you liked it (thought you would after seeing you wre a tech lover like me

K, updated my level with a few nice little touches:
Changed the camera so it moves out but doesn't pan on te soldier.
Changed the look of the heli (very very pleased with the alterations)
Added a new enemy (a helicopter) pretty tough to kill, but have removed all the planes on the first carrier, so it's like mini boss fight

Weapon crates respawn at the heli port near the boss ship and the crate on the boss ship, should make things a lot easier

Added on the menu a list of things that are memorised so when you replay you can see why was memorised from the last time

Very much getting there now.... Really REALLY need some cool original music for it now!!

Thanks to every one that has suggested things, I believe I have fixed most issues now

Looks interesting. I've queued it up, and I'll play it after work.

EDIT: Just played it. This is shaping up to be a great level. The camerawork isn't great, but it still works well enough. I can't wait to see what you do with the thermo space you have left over.

Still a little confused as to the issues with the cameras... That's three that don't like it and 7 that say its not an issue or indeed say its actually helpfull (some via twitter or private messages) so I think I will leave it as is?

So, yeah, there is some thermo left, but I believ I won't be adding much more as I don't want any lag issues.....

K, started writing some music for it last night, may take a few days, but getting close now!

About the camera issue... It's been a few days since I played it (I keep meaning to replay it to get you more feedback, but I'm just SUPER BUSY with university and work) But if I remember right, the camera was really jerky, perhaps if you play with the, uh what is it called, cut style? transition type?, and or the time it takes to transition it would seem 'smoother'?

Just a thought. I'll try and replay soon.

Hey luke
Ok, the camera is on speed scale... Four cameras for the four directions you point the stick, the further you point the stick the further the camera pans, so fast jerky movements will I guess make the camera seem a little jerky... I guess I am use to gentle movements of the sticks..... Guess I could do an option to turn the camera on or off, pretty easy to do...

K, music is now written, very dancy, but seems to fit well with the game play. Added a volume slider so you can choose the volume you like most

Congrats shade! I don't have a vita, so I can't see and beta test any of your levels anymore. Lol

Maybe you could do some kind of cross play level? Or perhaps try that idea where your tank can adjust to terrain light being able to take flight or go underwater?

Anyways congrats again.

(Oh and hope you can find your copy of LBP2)

Congratulations on the team pick man!!

I knew this was special when I played the unfinished version a couple days ago.

Going to DL the finished level tonight.

I remember your psp levels. They were all top notch in writing and unique ideas. Carob Bean was my favorite.

Glad to see you creating on vita.

Hehe, yeah that's where it all started for me on the psp, may have to redo pirates of the carob bean one of these days on the vita?! My levels have become far more serious since then, really LOVE making these too down shooters!
I just noticed, I joined this forum pretty much three years ago

Hey domik !!! good to hear from you! Met you through here and te psp section some three years ago now, wow!
Hope you enjoy the finished product

K, so am gona start on renegade assault 2 tonight..... Any ideas? Think this one will be more open, desert theme, buildings that you enter with the soldier to do various missions.... Perhaps make the soldier do more sneaking (metal gear solid style? )
Ideas for enemies? Going to reuse the tanks and enemy heli's, perhaps jeeps and trucks with troops in? Troops instead of soldiers? All ideas muchly apreciated (might do a new thread to keep people posted...worth it?

A well Deserved team pick my friend, I love the improvements you made since the last time I played. the rain/thunder added a lot more to the environment, the title screen is dope, the music is awesome and fits the level perfectly, I also like the additon of the new helicopter enemy. im sure you'll be getting a couple more thousand plays now. congrats2013-01-29 18:34:00

Hehe, thanks only about 10% of people have smiled it, and most aren't even bothering to get a score, but heck, I'm not complaining I understand shooters aren't for most people on lbp

Started part 2 last night. Going to have collectable or perhaps 'buyable' upgrades... Already made a lock one system where to tap an enemy to lock onto for the rockets which is fun.... Going to make pretty much very thing destructible, and try and keep most of the action for the heli.might do away with the heli pad and allow you to drop a soldier anywhere on the map?
Made the logic for the enemies too... They now react with the environment, steering around obstacles, and reversing up if they get stuck (like in my lbp2 tank commander level) ... Might base this on 'desert strike' and have hostages to rescue too ?

U know its a pretty complex level.... the beginning is kinda confusing... at least for me it was... u get right into the game and u dont even know whats going on, when allready some text pops up one after another, just after u barely moved, and than u have to get to used to the controls and the camera....

U have to play a little bit into it, before u realize how much went into this... i liked that u used those green hologram material for those monitors, like its a radar effect... thats exactly what i ment.

Speaking of that, how about some radar in your next level that shows enemies? It must be possible somehow and must look awesome.

All your ideas sounds great, i like another enviroment and maybe not so pinched? Your Level now has a great design but overall i would like it more open, atleast a bit... having the heli available where u land it, would be cool. Maybe even another vehicle to use? Like a Jeep?

Anyways i think u know what u do, u got some experience in this things... im willing to help testing again.

P.S.:

Give Multiplayer! ^^

desert stike seems like an awesome idea, upgrades would be awesome but not really neccesary if you added a couple more weapons or something, maybe a flamethrower. what i would really like too see is a little more open world exploration, having the heli land anywhere would be awesome, and like rough tea said another vehicle would be cool, maybe a tank or jeep or something, im thinking it would be cool if when you where on foot, an enemy jeep rolls up on you, and out jump 2 or 3 small enemies to kill then you could steal the jeep after you killed the enemies.
P.S. how did you make the vehicle explosions, did you have an emmiter emit a lightball set to expand then explode followed by some horrible gas emmitied or something?

Hey all (I am REALLY tires so forgive me for not replying to everything that was mentioned above )
Thanks very much for your ideas!!!!! I have had a couple of days off work, and have been going crazy doing renegade assault 2

Here's what I got:
Rescue stranded soldiers for points and upgrades!
All the buildings are Destrructable, they even leave debri and ruins behind
Lock on system for the rockets: destroy al the radar turrets to then be able to 'touch' on on enemy to bribing up a target over them. The rockets only lock on if you are facing in the targets general direction though as other wise it would be too easy
Open world map, hop out of the heli any time you want and go on foot
The enemies now have a bit of AI, they avoid obstacles, and reverse up If they get stuck (normally lol)
I published the level as a sub level, you need the code 1279 to access it ( http://vita.lbp.me/v/bwrb6 )

K, so I may well do other vehicles, but I can't get my head around how to do that right now as for radar, I plan to do a map that will be on the menu page showing where you are and we're the enemies are (like in my tank vs aliens on lbp2)

Enjoy, and thanks so much for all your input!

Hi there !
I tried the demo of "Renegade Assault 2" yesterday and I think that was pretty great ! The improvements you've done are really nice (more enemies , destructible buildings, soldiers to rescue...). I also enjoyed the possibility to land everywhere with the helicopter ! Things you could add are for example new vehicles, more weapons, some new areas... Although I found it pretty simple too : the enemies shots are really simple to avoid. That was not the same case with your first level, because of the water (soldier can't walk on it).

But it was overall a nice preview of the game to come ! Of course, the most amazing awesome cool thing ever would have been a gigantic area with level links and memorizers tricks to have a true open world... but in fact that's harder to do (I'm currently trying to do a top-down view A-RPG like that...)

Thanks for playing!!! I can't wait to wait to get back home and do more, and also try out all these new leeks I the forum

Yeah, this is just really a tester for logic rather than the fixes playing area. My idea is level links to areas like this, all with set tasks, ranging in simple tutorial, all the way to massive bullet hail hell. Yep plan to do a lot more enemies, will do some parts where you HAVE TO go on foot to perhaps find keys etc. Wana do some bIiiig boss fights (first is a chinook) also gonna do a better HUD, and yep, some new limited fire weapons not sure about new drivable vehicles, I may have to totally re work my logo for that!

I you need testing in return I'll be happy to oblige

Just played it and its pretty much what i imagined it to be, and before reading the post above, it was clear to me, that this is just a simple presentation/tutorial or first look at, whats it gonna turn out to be.

And, yeah, i believe u know what u are doing... so i think it gonna turn out pretty well. Your Ideas sounds great and some boss fights would be awesome.

Edit: Your Lockbox sux tho ^^ haha

Dude, I appreciate your feed back VERY much, so don't hold back hahah at my lock box level, that took me like ten minutes, didn't see the point in spending time on it

K, done the 'sumarine' style radar, picks up both enemy and friendlys , very pleased with this, looks very much like any other sonar style radar
Made the game playing area about three times the size
Got hummers and a new heli enemy, made the soldiers easier to kill with the heli...
What I'm struggling with is game play ideas. Not sure I can face the 'level links idea now....seems its gonna be sooo much work, perhaps do a renegade assault 3 for further missions?
Do I just keep this as a free roaming 'kill everthingi' type level, or do I do missions? Should I make them small and simple (the level link idea) or make it just a basic k destruction fest? Should I get rid of the soldier....does it really add anything to the game play brin able to get out on foot?
Just thinking aloud.... All feed back very very much appreciated
