Reducing Level Heat

Archive: 10 posts

So i'm trying to reduce the heat for my newest level. Honestly I don't know why they allow you to add more than the level can handle, but that's something else entirely. I'm more interested if anyone knows what objects create the most and the least amount of heat so I can remove some things from my track to improve performance. For instance, do lights and emitters generate more heat than about 5 shapes stuck together? Is it better to combine lots of little shapes or use one large one? Ect.. Any info on how heat is generated would be welcome.2013-01-18 06:24:00

I'm not sure if it applies to LBPK, but usually in the LBP games, shapes with a lot of vertices take up a good amount of space (especially if there's a lot).

Infinitely spawning emitters are also known for taking up space in the LBP games.

I hear fences take up a lot of thermo, and those roads with holes in them.2013-01-18 15:23:00

Try not to make too many mistakes. Because if you delete an object, sometimes you don't get the thermo space back. I don't really know what objects this happens too. But I do know it can happen to custom weapons, when i made my custom weapons a while back on a blank level, after i finished them and deleted everything but the entrance gongs, my thermo was at a whopping 75-80%

So if you are trying to build something like your own custom buildings, weapons or logic, try making these on another level, capture the final version and bring it over to your level

Cool. This is all really good advice, for all creators. I had a sneaking suspicion that heat wasn't always returned after deleting some items, good call on creating the complex objects in another level, I should have done that for my latest track =(2013-01-18 21:45:00

Sackbots can take a good 1/4 of a notch on a therm, so 20 sackbots could take up 3 bars and so on, WITHOUT costumes and acting, which will make the therm crazy2013-01-18 22:34:00

Well see if there are any unwanted objects on the track for a start. And remember to only decorate the areas around the track and the player is going to see. There is no point in decorating areas that the player isn't even going to see from the track so try and remove as much detail from areas that are far away from the track as possible is a start. Another thing you can do is try and change the road surface and don't pick one that has too many holes in it. The ones that have transparent glass in them take up a lot of thermo because transparent objects are quite complex and this is why glass material is opaque in LBPK to keep the game framerate up.

More things you can do to reduce the heat of your level is keeping any logic and emitters that you use to a minimum; it's not worth making a level more complicated then it has to be for it to work, so if you have any logic in your level, try and see if you can break it down and find a 'cooler' alternative that won't heat up your level as much.

I've noticed this too. However it appears to me that if you exit and reload the level, then the thermo space comes back. I haven't tested this extensively, but noticed it to be the case on the one level I've published so far.

I also noticed that I had more problems with the PS3 freezing once the thermo was half full.

Biggest use of Thermo, is the games road styles, ESPECIALLY any that use any transparency. So if you want to reduce thermo, use less of the track and use objects for the road if at all possible. This won't work for all tracks of course, but anywhere you can do it. You should.2013-01-19 23:20:00
