Writing Contest

The writing contest is a contest that shall be held monthly. Every month, we will hold a new contest, in which the members of this forum may write short stories or poems and submit them for the people of this forum to read and review.

At the start of each month, a new "theme" or "genre" for writing shall be announced. The people of this forum may then write a piece of literature that falls into the catagory.

After doing so, they shall upload their stories to this thread- where everyone will read these creations. They shall then pm the one they think is the best to me, RockSauron. I will tally the votes, and the winner shall win a prize- mostly probably LittleBigExperience, and I may give the winner a sticker of their choosing .

Rules
1. NO Character limit. Feel free to make it as long or short as you like- though please, use common sense.
2. Remember to keep your story within the genre given to you- if you don't want to write a story in that genre, then don't take part that time.
3. Participants CANNOT vote for any other people. Their votes wil not be tallied.
4. As this is a forum contest, ALL Site Rules still apply.
5. Only ONE Entry per round.

This Month's theme is...

General

This month has no predetermined theme. Feel free to write about whatever you want.

This round ends on February 28, so you have 5 weeks to write your story.

Disclaimer: Time limits and other such features may be changed if people think it gives them too much time.

Rewards

First Place - 1000 exp

Second Place - 700 exp

Third Place - 500 exp

Entries:

To enter, just upload your entry to Goolgle Docs and give me the link.

this may really help me. I need a story for a film for a class coming up this year and this can give me the motivation. I'll partake in this! Rep for you. 2009-01-19 23:21:00

Well, ironically I've already been working on a story for the past couple weeks. So I get a head start, I guess. It's at the 10,000 word mark, currently. Expecting it to end up around 40,000, I suppose. Whether or not I finish it like I want depends on my entry.2009-01-19 23:35:00

I think there is a character limit per post. That might be a good sensible limit for people. I think it is around the 10,000 letter mark if it's the same as blogs, which I think is about 4 to 5 pages of text. CC would know the definite limit.2009-01-20 00:09:00

I believe it's 14,000, if my memory serves. I think there was reference to that in some post some time ago. Not sure if it's changed.

Also, I doubt that entries will be posted in full on here. Instead, a link to a Google Doc would be much more concise and organized.

That's probably the best way

I'm actually interested, but I'll wait for a round where there is a subject to participate. I don't have any particular stories I want to write about. I just use LBP to tell the stories I want at the moment

Something else you might want to have is E rated stories considering the site we are on. I don't mean for people to be writing children stories or entirely avoiding "mature issues", but rather not be overly offensive in what they write. This is an E rated site after all. 2009-01-20 23:03:00

Ah, yes. I forgot to say for them to follow the basic site rules in the rule description, so thanks!

... So yeah, don't do anything that isn't allowed on the forums.

Question: Does it have to be a story? In the OP you switch from saying 'a piece of literature' to 'story' so I'm curious.2009-01-21 01:27:00

At times, the genre may be a story, at times a poem.

In the first contest, it's "general", so I suppose it could be any type of literature for this contest.

nice job code

And will Grammer come into play in judgeing our stories?

Remember that usage of grammar really does help readability a whole lot. And that grows exponentially as the size of the document does. So if there are things in it that detract from the story, that makes a negative impact. However, that can be phrasing, wording, and just sentence structure that kills it, rather than strict grammatical rules. Plus, doesn't look as professional standing up against ones that have it.

So you'd be best off using it.

Are we allowed more than one entry?

One per round. You can, of course, write another per every round.

Ooh, right... Good point.

Well, I'll leave this open in case someone wants to step in and host. I think it's a good idea, and should continue, as there've been enough people showing interest to warrant it.

If it comes down to it, I'll sponsor it, myself. I doubt I'll be finishing in time, anyway.

I'd be willing to host, but if my schedule starts getting out of hand, I may need to forfeit the position.

What's the deadline? (..........!) February 28th? Neeto, I get to read a ton of short stories on my birthday.

Scratch that, If you want, I can host this. I love writing in all of it's forms, and would be honored to choose the winners, and update this every month. The only thing is, I don't have many points, and don't really want to part with the ones that I have, so If any moderator, or kind soul, could give out the points to the appointed winners. So please contact me if I can.

Thanks!

Well, I have no clue how to actually run a contest and it would suffer if I did it... sure, I'd allow you to take over.

I also could buy the points and stuff to give out to the people, since I have so many and yeah.

the original post did said it was public vote and the person running would be P.M.'d peoples votes and count them so you wouldn't really be choosig the winner

thats what he said before so yeah

and Rock, since it's an offical contest i don't think you have to buy X.P. (this is offical right?)

Here's a suggestion;
Somebody decide on an entry deadline, once every entry has been collected, make a new thread where you post the entries with a poll where other users can vote. Put that deadline up for some few days, maybe a couple of weeks.
Presto.

We discussed this in the moderator's forums. Seeing as it's not all that LBP related and the issue of topic, judging and participation are all in doubt, we have decided to officially withdraw support from this contest.

This should allow anyone who is interested to continue this idea in whatever format they feel appropriate, without the need for staff intervention.

Feel free if you wish to host and judge a new writing contest to create a new thread in the Contests (http://www.lbpcentral.com/forums/forumdisplay.php?f=62) section of the forum. Don't forget to include rules, deadlines, judging conditions, prizes and other such things.

I won't lock this thread immediately, but if discussion goes way off topic then it will be locked.

So officially this round of the contest has been cancelled. No prizes will be awarded as no judging has occurred. You may wish to resubmit whatever has been currently written into any new versions of this contest if they conform to the rules of the new contest.
