So many options coming...! (New Consoles)

Archive: 13 posts

Looks like an interesting year ahead. 2013 will bring us, it is speculated, increased trade show demos and possibly retail debuts of the next Xbox and the next Playstation. Meanwhile in the last week we've suddenly gotten news of the Ouya, Project Shield and Valve's Steam Box / Piston.

These things won't all compete with each other. I don't want to promote flaccid debate about when they might actually be sold or which is "better" based on the few details currently available, but I am curious:

Are you thinking of changing how you might game with all these things coming? Are you following news about them at all?

I think I might pre-order God of War Ascension Ultimate Edition, because of that badas Kratos figurine.

Might do the same for the ultimate edition (not the super-expensive one, mind you) of Bioshock Infinite if there's enough time after the Vita, new Headset, and GoW Ascension Ultimate edition

Wow, the Oculus Rift is news to me. Where does it fall on the spectrum of game consoles?2013-01-09 11:19:00

I'm somewhat interested to see what Valve's console will offer but they haven't offered nearly enough information about it yet. I think I'll be sticking with Sony, assuming they continue making consoles and great games, etc.
And it's not just the quality of the games, it's also what platform your friends are on, all mine are on Playstation.

I'll just wait a lot before buying any new console. I'm likely to end up getting the WiiU since I'm a big Nintendo fanboy, but not before waiting to see if it's actually worth it, since the Wii was somewhat dissapointing for what it could've been, as much as I don't regret getting it.

The next Playstation and Xbox are likely to have much superior technology and that's not a good sign for me, I'm expecting lots of developers just giving up on it for not having enough resources to make a graphically appealing game for the masses... For the time being, I'm just sticking to my PS3 and Wii for the time being, there are some great games on each I've never had the chance to play (for example, last year I finally had the chance to play every main Assassin's Creed game except III, and am not dissapointed).

The next gen competition hasn't been announced yet and there's already excuses being put out for not porting games to it.

I'm definitely getting the PS4 whenever it comes out. The Ouya looks decent, but the fact that games are only downloadable for it just turns me away. That's the reason the PSP Go was discontinued.2013-01-10 00:15:00

I'm hoping, but not expecting, the PS4 to support PS3 games, but like you I think there's such a vast selection of great games on PS3 that (all other things being unchanged) I could hold out a few years and catch up on what I've missed before even thinking about the PS4. That's why this sudden rash of new and different consoles like the Ouya and Steam Box are grabbing my attention: in the time I'm "waiting" to get to PS4 I might pick up one of these other things and it'll change my whole gaming habit. I honestly have no idea what form my hobby will take in even a year. It's kind of thrilling.

Well I already bought an Ouya via the Kickstarter (I was one of the first 1000 backers ). So I can't wait for that. Not expecting amazing things but I think it'll be a lot of fun and we'll see a massive range of indie games on the console. I'm expecting it to be a bit like Desura in that regard. I also don't think the download only model will be a problem is it is a home console. I think the PSP GO was a problem because it was a portable console and you could only buy games and download them at home. Also the games tended to be pretty big. I have a feeling Ouya games will be smaller in size and download quite quickly.

All the fact that all the games will have some content playable for free means that I'll only purchase if I really enjoy the game or really like what the developer is trying to do.

Regarding the consoles, I'm unsure. I'm looking forward to see what all of them offer. The Xbox illuminate thing looks cool enough but I have a feeling it'll make me queasy after a while, much like watching 3D. Looking forward to see the quality of 4K video compared to 1080P but also worry that devs are going to have a very difficult time with that, especially if streaming the content from a disc. I would imagine there'll be a lot of mandatory installs. Still, 4K Uncharted and God of War? Yes please!

I'm most excited about the Steambox. Really interested to see what the final product ends up being. However I'm concerned that there are lots of prototypes from a lot of different companies so if a lot of them go to market, I can't really see how that will be different from the current PC market. I was hoping that they would just stick with one machine. Also the Steam Achievement system could do with a complete revamp.

Probably gonna get the PS4 and a gaming PC. Not really that interested in any Nintendo or Microsoft games. I'll get most of the multiplats on the PC and the exclusives on the PS4.2013-01-17 17:03:00

A while back, there was some news that the Sony patented intrusive in-game ads, as well as blocking the use of pre-owned games.

I need clarity on that before I make my decision.

That would be the equal of saying "we already have a lot of money, so here's a black cardboard box with a PS4 logo", only with actual production costs.

I do believe that 2013 might be the last year for the current gen. Or at least the beginning of that transitory period when most games are made for the previous gen and ported to the new one.

I have little problem with blocking pre-owned games. I live in Japan though, where new and used are virtually the same price and there is no game rental culture. These days everything's going digital anyway -- and the dollar is the among the cheapest currency and American prices are always the very, very best. So unless they also kill PSN and the Playstation Store, I can't see the pre-owned games thing affecting my gaming habits at all. Perhaps the PS4 will also introduce a proper rental system. Not the 60 minute playable trial thing, but $5 for 48 hour access, or similar. The only problem here would be accounting for the huge disparity in people's Internet service. You might pay for 48 hours of access but it will take longer than that to get it downloaded over multiple logons. They'll figure it out. This system works fine with movie rentals in Japan.

In-game advertising that's built into the physical game world also doesn't pose a problem to me. It's the popup stuff, like trophies, that would be frustrating. If they did that, I would also expect some buyout option. Maybe PS+ membership would disable/minimize ads.
