3D Animation...?

Archive: 15 posts

Anyone here know anything about 3D animation? Like professionally? Because I'm thinking of taking an animation course in Uni when I finish school...I already have a little bit of experience from both 3DS Max and Maya!

Anyone here share the same interest when it comes to 3D stuffs?

Of course, by all means, you can use this thread to talk about anything and everything 3D...I just needed some sort of question to start this off! ^^

Not the slightest idea about anything here. I've tried before - was way above me even after reading every single help article and tutorial I could find.2008-08-17 12:45:00

I'm taking a 3D modeling class in my High School. It's an architectural program(AutoCAD) but it's the same concept. I'm still working in 2D, but I'm the best in the class so far and we move into 3D next week.

I don't really know how to do 3D animation, though. I still suck at 3D modeling programs, although I hope that will change. My high school offers 3 years of CAD(I'm on my first) so I'll progressively improve. Once I get a handle on 3D modeling, I'll probably get a program for my personal use.

The best advice I can think of is that there's not necessarily one "right" way to do or create something as long as you get a result you're happy with. I can't texture for **** so with my avatar I rendered 4 colors on the face and brushed and fixed it up in photoshop.2008-08-24 12:16:00

@Cartman: Hmm...I was never one for modeling...I actually don't like it. I'd like to be good at it, but I suck at it so much that it becomes a bore >_>

Good luck with all that though! =D

@BasketSnake: Hmm...Modeling, texturing and rigging...I dislike, mostly because I'm very bad at them...animation is what I really like to do!

I'll ask for more tips later

You animate with Maya? and what type of setup...I've animated slightly with the preset bones rig (biped) but all my 3d sackboys are rigged with normal bones and just posed. All my animated sackboy stuff is done with bones and keyframes. **** tweaking. I only use 3dmax.2008-08-24 20:14:00

Please correct me because I know nearly nothing about this topic but like many gamers I'm interested in it.

I was under the impression most 3d animation was based around creating wireframe structures. Isn't that modeling? [I have yet to make the leap from crappy 2d animations via frames]

I just graduated from ITT for Digital Entertainment and Game Design, so yeah I know some stuff. To answer someones question, yes you can create from wireframe, but most people don't. It is mostly like sculpting, you start with a box and start to move it around to form it how you want, now mechanical and buildings you would start with a structure and then turn into a 3D object. But to create a 3D chatacter you start with a box.

Now animation, I would suggest the best way to understand it is the rules from Disney, they have a set of rules for animation, and also Pixar has added rules to it also. If you want I can find them and post them for you.

Now about 3Dmax and Maya, this will depend on what you need but both are good.

http://www.blender.org/

I've never actually completed a project in Blender but, there were a couple of tutorials I went through and I at least did the sheet metal of a Honda S2000. Stopped there though. I'll find the tutorial and post up.

*edit* Here's the tutorial I used.

*edit-bravo* I've attached an early screen cap of my S2000. I know I did more than this but, I'll have to get on WinXP to get the blender file. Blender is pretty powerful for a freebie open source app.
