Middle Earth - The Untold Chronicles (A Lord of the Rings spinoff)

Archive: 16 posts

Hey LBPC! Just figured I'd start a project thread for a new project (or quest rather) that myself and a couple friends are partaking in. This level series will take place after the War of the Ring (or after the third and final movie of the trilogy). Though the storyline is completely different from anything written by author J.R.R. Tolkien, the settings will be identical as the character travels across all corners of Middle Earth. There will also potentially be cameo appearances from characters featured in the movie trilogy as well as some from Tolkien's other writings (Silmarillion, The Hobbit, and other Unfinished Tales). At this point, I don't want to give away much information on the storyline as we are still in the initial development of an announcement trailer.

The purpose of this thread is to (1) keep those interested in the project in tune with updates and (2) anyone interested in helping out in the project. With that being said, I would love to have everyone's help, but we must draw the line somewhere with regards to number of people and creating ability (sorry!).

Current Sackfolk involved in the project:

stryder12 - story development, scenic creating, cinematography, some gameplay (though I'm not great at it =D)
ThePatriotsX - story development, scenic creating, effects
Buddydestruction - music master!

So if you are interested in helping out or simply want an update on how the project is coming along feel free to ask!

Currently Working on: Announcement Trailer

EDIT: Voice actors will be needed for Announcement Trailer and possibly other cutscenes

Not to be a buzzkill, but unless you can make the trailer awesome and the actual game even more awesome, I wouldn't see it worth while.

Middle-Earth Games just never have reached to the high standards of the movies, which I dare to say are even better than the actual books, because I'm a visual person. So my question to you is this, even though I'm likely to find out in the trailer: How does it play? Does it use controlinator and if it does, will it just be another failed attempt to make a large and yet working RPG in LBP? No offence, but one can't honestly say that any of those attempts ever worked. You don't need to answer at all, but if you want to, you can do it with a private-message.

If I was to help, though, here is the list where I personally consider myself expert at:

-Story-writing
-Creating gritty and atmospheric environments
-Coming up with unique play-style ideas that one can't find from cool pages or MM-picks

Not to flatter myself, but to rather bring up my skills, because though they are a bit rusty at the moment, as it has been 2 years since I last published a level they are still there somewhere in my head. Just need to dig them out again.

Yes! I completely agree that the films were truly the pinnacle as far film visuals go.... but... I feel that it is possible to pull it off in LBP. For the trailer, we will be using the 3-d tool throughout to provide the most detail possible as thermometer is not really a concern with scenes being emitted/destroyed. I'm quite certain I will opt out of using the 3-d tool for the the actual levels and rather using a design sticker pannel back layer. As far as how the game will play: This is still being contemplated, but we do have a large amount of the storyline planned out. Personally I tend to lean away from controllinators. An important thing to understand is that this is not an RPG (guess I may have made it sound that way with the whole "travel across Middle Earth"), but rather an original storyline that incorporates elements of the lore from Tolkien's works. Here is the set of Bag End made for the trailer:

Granted this is one of the easier scenes, I feel it came out pretty well even without the propper camera angle set up.
I'll leave you with that so feel free to let me know what you think and we shall meet up on PSN sometime!

Sadly I can not see you on PSN after this day or tomorrow, due to it's going away for the next week's weekdays. However, we can likely communicate through here.2013-01-05 09:38:00

Hi Stryder12, I love the idea of a 'what happens after the book ends' idea. I wish you a lot of luck on your project.
I have a few projects in the pipeline, BUT, I'd love to help out where I can, if it helps.

Looks quite nice. I'd like to give a tip or two if you don't mind. Try to make a YouTube trailer to get more people interested, like comphermc did with his Wizard level. If you ever need a little lore help, feel free to drop a question or two on my profile page, I've always loved the Tolkien lore And, if you want to make a really big and ambitious, get more people. Good Luck with it, sounds really promising! 2013-01-08 14:35:00

Well, The trailer is going along very well so far. At this point we have a couple of scenes left to complete, and then we will proceed with beginning to set up the camera angles / emitting of scenes. We are looking for someone to perhaps narrate through the trailer, but have not made a final decision yet. If interested, we'd need someone with a good quality mic and one of those deep epic voices . Oh and I'll throw up a couple pics of some new things on my next post or as soon as upload them to lbp.me profile.2013-01-15 01:24:00

I got the system back and running smoothly. I have a rather majestic voice myself, if I may say, so I can probably do that voice acting for the trailer if needed. I have also received feedback on my near-perfect imitation of Bane, but that's a whole new story. Also, Playstation Eye works as my mic, and supposedly it's a good quality microphone as well.2013-01-15 15:06:00

Rivendell approaching the "final-touches" stage for one of the trailer scenes:

There are several other scenes completed, but I don't want to give everything away just yet
I cannot speculate on a release date for the trailer as there is still quite a bit of work to do on scenes, and then all of the camera work and emitting of scenes must be set up.

Opinions or suggestions are more than welcome, don't be shy

My opinion is this: "3D-glitch" sucks. I don't like it at all and if I'll be making a level for this, expect no "3D" from my levels.2013-01-18 13:42:00

Well I agree to a certain extent... 3D can sloppy which is why I do not intend to use it in the actual levels, only in this trailer and possibly a couple cutscenes. Now my question to you is... (in your opinion) does the 3D make the Rivendell scene look bad? I felt the 3D was necessary to show at least a little more depth. At this point, the only thing in the normal layers is everything in the same layer as the balcony of that front house.2013-01-18 14:19:00

I don't understand what's the problem with 3D besides it being something of a bother for the creators themselves...2013-01-18 21:02:00
