GameStick - The Ouya Competitor

Archive: 5 posts

So the kickstarter for a new, cheap, Android based, open console just launched. It's called "GameStick", costs $79 (as opposed to the $99 Ouya) and has exceeded its Kickstarter goal of $100,000 (as opposed to the $950,000 goal of the Ouya) on day two of the kickstarter with 28 days left.

It is being made by PlayJam which, according to Wikipedia is "the world’s largest interactive casual games network, available across digital TV, mobile and online platforms." The seem to be focused on the smart-TV gaming market.

The catchphrase they are using for this console is "the most portable console ever". The image below shows a prototype model of the controller and console, the console being so small that it fits INTO the controller when not in use. The controller has a very old-school look, while still using the more modern 360-style dual analog stick configuration. They say it will be nicer on release, it's unknown whether they mean the colour-scheme or the overall form and layout. Though they say it's in the final design stage so I assume it won't be too different. It looks like it would comfortably fit into a shirt pocket which is pretty cool.

The console will be powered directly by the HDMI connection and will connect to the controller via bluetooth. It will also be compatible with any bluetooth controller. Here are the technical specs:

Processor - Amlogic 8726-MX (seemingly not as powerful as Tegra 3 but they show Shadowgun running on it)
Memory - 1GB DDR3 / 8GB FLASH

Content Download Manager w/ cloud storage for games
(not sure what the cloud storage means exactly... that they will host the game or save data will be hosted in a cloud...)

WiFi - 802.11 b/g/n
Bluetooth - LE 4.0
O/S - Android Jelly Bean
Controller - Bluetooth, 3 mode controller: gamepad, mouse and keyboard with support for up to 4 controllers.
Full 1080p HD video decoding

Going by the kickstarter they seem to be quite focused on bringing existing Android games to their console. They are in talks with multiple developers. They are "targeting both the casual and mid-core gamer looking for a console experience but without the traditional cost."

What does everyone think? It seems very similar to the Ouya but possibly with aiming at the casual market. The controller definitely screams casual as it's missing the comfortable design of modern controllers which enable longer gaming sessions.

I don't really know what to make of it. I wasn't expecting an Ouya competitor to be announced and be releasing so close to the Ouya release. I'm not sure yet if I'm going to back it, the controller, the focus on the casual and the seeming focus on porting of games from the android market are putting me off at the moment. I also like the fact that the Ouya is an actual mini-console while this will just be sticking out of the TV. But with a big and experienced company behind it, who knows, it could end up being more successful than the Ouya.

These cheap consoles with Android OSes are interesting to say the least. If they're anything like the Android phone, they will have a nonexistent library of games but tons of emulating potential. So... there's that.2013-01-14 05:40:00

Conceptually it's amazing. The sort of no fuss, simple thing that we've been waiting for a long time. Kudos to these guys for getting the prototype going. If it takes off for sure you'll see all electronics companies adding HDMI outputs to mobile products, and while I realize what's promised via kickstarter I tend to believe this is not trying to compete or actually get developers, but to prove the concept works and the market exists and be able to sell it to one of those electronics companies for a very, very large sum and a nice work contract. We're in the era where instant and simple output to screens is possible, cheap, and expected. Rather past the era where it's expected.2013-01-15 07:20:00
